Home Energy Audit (1 Viewer)

Any of you ever gotten one for your home or familiar with them?

Looking at a couple options to come out to our home and check window/door sealing, attic/basement air leaks and insulation, and review equipment and energy bills to find areas to improve energy efficiency and eventually lower bills.

I'm curious if any of you have ever done the same and what your experience with it was.  If so, did it make a difference?

Local energy company did one for free.  Couple of minor recommendations, but my house was built in 2001.

We had one done when my state was offering credits for efficiency stuff. They did my whole neighborhood, I was in the need for a new AC unit.  They came out and checked everything but the windows I think.   I got all new insulation in the attic (21" I think), my seams in my garage spray insulated (I have room above it), new furnace, water heater, condensation pump, new exhaust for water heater, new outside unit, new bathroom exhaust fans and carbon monoxide detectors.

They kept the 5k credit, and I was charged 10k with a zero interest loan for 10 years (lmao).

Probably could have gotten all that done a little cheaper but in the end it was worth it.  I am currently saving probably 50 or so a month compared to before.

For me I felt worth it but I was in the need for a new unit

Eta: the company that did the audit had to have it approved via the state and also performed the work... Ymmv

Yes, in two different houses. In CT, it's cheap (~$75) and you get access to rebates for energy efficient home improvement upgrades (insulation, windows, hvac, etc.)

I would say it was worthwhile. Probably more than half of the recommendations were common sense things, but we did learn some things we didn’t know that helped. The infrared camera thing helped because we were not aware of how bad the insulation in our walls was. We knew the attic needed it. I knew I had to do some weather stripping, but he pointed out some places I hadn’t thought of. I’m not sure what we learned from the blower door thing, but I believe that caused him to recommend a bathroom fan, which we got.  The cost savings has been significant, but more importantly the house is more comfortable. Before, we had some drafty areas or cold spots in the winter, and it’s a lot more comfortable now throughout.  Our house is about 100 years old.
