Home Theater Projection Question (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
We need to replace one of our home theater projectors. The installer sent the following email.  Does anyone have any thoughts?  We don't game in the room and use it mostly for movies and sports.

Sorry for the delay.  New projector models were shown at the trade show but took some time to get pricing and delivery dates available.  Many models weren’t shipping until next year so I put together options that are available now.

Epson 4040 $3,300
3-LCD with E-shift 4K, and lens memory
Cinema 1200 lumens, low latency for video gaming, good black levels

JVC DLAX550R $4,500
L-Cos with E-shift 4K, and lens memory
Cinema 1400 lumens, 10 bit color, best black levels and color available

Epson LS10500 $8,300
LASER light engine, rated 30,000 hours (never replace a lamp)
Liquid Crystal on Quartz with E-Shift 4K, lens memory
Cinema 1,400 lumens, low latency for video gaming, very good black levels, 10 bit color

The lens memory will allow either projector to replace both the theater and golf projectors.  With lens memory the anamorphic lens is not necessary but still improves the image significantly by increasing brightness and pixels shown for movies by 35%.  To use the anamorphic lens it will require a motorized lens transport that will move it into place for movies and away for TV and Golf.  Let me know if you have questions.

That JVC is really good from what I've seen/read.

Instead of Epson's 4040, your dealer should be recommending the 6040. Higher lumens and much higher contrast than the 4040. And it's $500 less than the JVC. (The 6040 and 5040 are the same thing, just different distribution paths - installers vs retailers).

None of these are native 4k projectors, if that matters. To get that you have to spend $10k for a Sony.

Thanks for the replies so far.  I don't think we need a 4K projector--would we be able to notice any significant difference between a 4K projector and either the JVC or the Epson 6040?  I believe our screen is 160".

It's replacing an Anthem LTX300 which was installed in the summer of 2010. Did we get average life from it?

I haven't seen the Sony 4k projector so this is a WAG but I don't think you'd see $6000 worth of difference between full/not full 4k projectors.

And if you got 6 years out of a projector, you got your money's worth. And you'll b notice a huge difference with a new projector - especially one of these.
