Horrible officiating.... (1 Viewer)

The Lions have had their share of bad calls this year and I won't even get into that....but yesterday, there was a call in the KC/Oakland game that was the worst I have EVER seen.

3rd and 2 at the Oakland 6 yard line and Cassell throws a ball to Moeaki which is called a TD. The play goes under review afterwhich the refs say he didn't cross the goal and the ball would be placed at the 1. 1st and goal at the one right? Nope 4th and 1 was the call. KC has to get up and snap the ball, it is a busted play and Cassell runs it in for another apparent TD. No wait, penalty on KC. After all this happens, Haley is going nuts about how it should have been 1st and goal at the 1. The refs figure out how bad they f'd up and give KC the ball but assess the penalty that happened on the play when KC thought it was 4th and 1 (play should never have happened). KC then scores on 1st and goal from the 11.

Didn't hurt KC because they still scored, but I haven't seen too many screw ups this bad in the NFL.

Watched much more of the Indy/Phil game, but I saw several "phantom" pass interference/defensive holding calls in the KC/Oak game.

The NFL needs to revamp it's officiating starting with hiring full time officials that weren't alive during the civil war. They also need to clarify and simplify the current rules and come up with a better Instant Replay Review system.

Oh, and get rid of Goodell...

I'd consider this a compliment more than anything. NFL refs do make mistakes, but go watch an NBA game and then consider the definition of horrible. This was a pretty obvious oversight but they dealt with it in a pretty reasonable way and calmly made it as right as possible. You as the penalty for two reasons. The first being that while it probably influenced KC's play calling its not immediately obvious that they would have done something different or did something that was bad for the "correct" situation. More importantly, if KC had scored on that 4th in goal play, Tom Cable surely could not have come running on to the field demanding it was actually 1st in goal and gotten the points taken off the board. Could he?

That crew managed to cause confusion on both the opening coin toss and the OT coin toss among many other terribad calls going both ways.

Not getting the down right after the Moeaki catch might have been the worst screw-up I have ever seen.

I was going to say that Haley should have known it was still 4th down, but I don't recall an official announcing the down, and it sure isn't his job to make sure the guys are changing the down markers.

I agree with the bolded. It seems like there are too many rules and the refs have to keep track of too much. The players seem to be confused on what they can and can't do. IMO, the officiating is impacting the games too much.

A lot of horrible calls all over the place. But that down and distance bit was really bad. Thefunny part was CBS put up their 1st down graphic right away.

The officials announced it was 4th down.

The Indy Philly game had a series of highly questionable calls too. Even after replay. It was astoundingly bad. And I heard the Arian Foster TD catch overturning was on par with Calvin Johnson's non-TD earlier this season.

That botched TD call, overturn, and incorrectly setting next play as 4th down was only 1 of MANY ridiculous bad calls in that game! One of the worst officiated games overall that I've every seen! But hey, that's Chiefs/Raiders at it's finest! Never pretty and never over til the last friggin play!

there was one in the first half where the ref that was in front of the play threw the flag just because the WR and DB fell to the ground, he had no idea what happened. personally i think the spot foul for pass interference is too severe.....i think 15 yds. is much more in line.

I have been saying too for several weeks now. Each week there are one or two threads like this--it seems worse than ever. TIme for the NFL to address it instead of fining players and coaches who point out the obvious.

The Foster non-TD was worse than Calvin's! Foster actually caught it, tucked it, and reached it over the goal line before the ground knocked it loose. I was sure they were going to call that a TD just because the reaching out of the ball was a clear 'secondary act', he caught it and reached it out.

That contained some of the worst, potentially game changing calls I have ever witnessed. There needs to be some new wording regarding the spirit of the rule vs letter of the law interpretation.

The officiating this season has been abysmal and I agree that the KC call was very bad. Embarassing actually. The NFL Rules are starting to look like the Tax Code and clearly needs some rational thinking and simplification.

On another note, I have seen numerous times this year Side Judges come in on a goal line play, blow the play dead, not signal ANYTHING, either TD No TD, etc. and spend about a minute literally looking at the pile of players who of course don't freeze where the whistle was blown but keep scraping and moving of yards and then decide to say Yup that's a TD. I don't understand this logic. They need to make that call when the play is "live" not later on. Terrible job this year and we can say that without Goodell slapping me with a fine ... I think. :)

On Vicks first attempt from the half yard line (which was ruled a TD and then overruled) no one made a call; then out of nowhere the line judge came running in signalling TD. The funny thing was, since it was challenged, they replayed the dive about 50 times and each time it clearly showed that the line judge's view was completely blocked by players and he couldn't possibly see the ball, let alone the ball in relation to the goal line. Its ridiculous.

as a sideline official this is absolutely the toughest call to make (even in high school, middle school, whatever) because of all the bodies that can get in the way.....many times we have no clue whether the runner got in on the initial surge or not.....this is why we often have the umpire give us a thumbs up or thumbs down signal on whether he got in or not and then we give or don't give the TD signal accordingly......often the umpire has the best look and it's really not that hard for him to determine if the ball got across before a knee was down......fwiw....the officials in the KC/OK game will get downgraded big time for their performance yesterday.......

It's funny how quick the league is to slap a fine or suspension on a player for a good hit, but refs can make terrible calls all game long and aren't even allowed to be criticized.

they may not get criticized by coaches/players/etc, but they do get criticized by their supervisiors and downgraded/upgraded accordingly......every single call/play they have in a game is reviewed over and over again by their superiors.......bad grading will affect their chances of working in the post season which is a huge goal for every official.....bad performances are dealt with behind the scenes and I think we can all understand why the league does not want their players/coaches/owners, etc publicly criticizing officials......if Bowe would have just made that catch..... :wall:

No doubt its a tough job. My point though, was that NO ONE had made a call on that play yet and all the sudden the dude came running down the line with his hands in the air. No one signaled him. He didn't see a damn thing. He had a 50/50 shot at guessing right and he whiffed. Of all the umps and refs on the field he was the least qualified to make a call. I hope you are right about the officiating being dealt with, but I suspect it is not nearly as harsh as it should be. I counted 4 specific blown calls that could have impacted the outcome of the game; luckily none of them did.

At some point during that game, I'm sure I heard Kevin Harlan says that 4 of the officials in that crew had called Super Bowl games.
