i've watched a lot more Family Guy than Simpsons, but i'd hesitate to call it better. The Simpsons has created a much richer world, one that acknowledges that family dont mean what it used to but wanna celebrate it anyway. Family Guy could care less because, there, it's not about the premise but the joke. Rather than use animation's amnesties to caricature society, they use them to annihilate it. Every FG premise is an excuse for a volume and variety of cutaways, in which comedy writers get to see how far they can take something - whether as far as taste or patience (they drag their bits on to see how long it will take the audience to notice, then laugh that they got to write less stuff because of it) - and still get it on TV. As a longtime lover and purveyor of The Funny, i get a large kick out of that. But the Simpsons has dwarfed it by creating a language and ethos for non-nuclear families to communicate with each other. And that embiggens us all.
