Houston eats and happy hour (1 Viewer)

I'm on Dallas St, just w of downtown, across the street from South Bank seafood. They're pretty good. We'll be going to the game at Minute Maid the next three nights and would like to find  places to go to around 4-5pm and hang out until catching an Uber to the game. Anywhere within a couple miles of the Park should work.

Gatlin and Caswell have a BBQ place nearby that isn't bad.  The collards are awesome. Kim Son is the classic Asian place in the area.  Decent Viet and other stuff.

Take an Uber to Hay Merchant and enjoy some of the Chris Shepherd Underbelly specialties there.  Venture a little further west to Crawfish and Noodles for great Viet-Cajun fusion.

On the way back to Austin stop in Brenham at Truth BBQ.  Their beef rib is as good as Mueller's.

Thanks, the in town sounds good, but we turn I10 through Columbus.

I'll Google the other two, they sound good.

Mai's (Vietnamese) - Milam and Francis

We haven't been to Jackson Street BBQ (Jackson & Franklin), but it gets good reviews.  And you can just walk to the ballpark.

The Andes Cafe might be worth a try.  (Canal & Navigation)  They serve South American food.

Irma's Original (Mexican) is two blocks from the park.

Let us know where you go.  We may want to try it, if we haven't already.

Jacksons BBQ is pretty good.  I went to high school with both Gatlin and Caswell.  Good guys.

Mais is kinda trash.  Good if you want late night Asian food but overpriced and the quality is lacking.  It was good 10-15 years ago.  Many have caught up or surpassed Mais. It's also in midtown.  Huyhns is the place you want to go and walking distance from the ballpark.  There are actually a ton of bars and restaurants on St. Emmanuel a few blocks away:  https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g56003-d2424940-Reviews-Huynh_Restaurant-Houston_Texas.html

Bad News Bar - great cocktails and ambience.  Located on the second floor with an amazing balcony overlooking Main St.

Local Foods - nice restaurant with fresh food and great drinks.  Like many restaurants downtown it closes early (8 or 9pm).  Great spot for lunch

Pappas Steakhouse - best steakhouse in Houston IMO

Conservatory - a cool place that is more like a food hall with several different restaurants and beer/wine options.  It's open til 3am as well.  My studio is downtown so I go here often.

Tout Suite - great coffee, pastry and food

I'm just giving you options downtown.  You can venture off to Montrose and Midtown but most of the recommendations are walking distance or short uber/train ride.   Have fun brother!

I like Tuesday night steak night at Griff's. They always have the Astros on and cheap booze
That's about a 5 minute walk from mi casa.  Been going there since I was 16.  Definitely an historic hole in the wall bar.  Kitchen pretty good as well.

I think we'll try Huynh tonight. Any dishes you recommend?

I'm think I may take wife to Griff's for a steak tomorrow.Show her a little elegance.

I'd like to try Pappa's. I love cold seafood towers. Is their's good or should I stick to beef? Went to Pappadeaux's on Avenida.. and it was not as good as most other Pappdeaux's I have visited.

We are going to try Huynh's tonight. We plan to get there at 5:30ish. Griff's tomorrow (assuming I'm correct on steak night).

I forget all the dishes at Huynh but the Duck Salad is worthwhile.  Just go with your gut and what looks good at other tables.  The waitstaff is extremely helpful and can help guide you depending on your tastes.

Pappas Steakhouse is quality all around.  Just be prepared to shell out a couple of bucks.  Its not cheap.  Haven't been to Pappadeux in about 20 years so can't speak on it.  Same name but completely different animals.  One is fine dining with amazing wine, the other more fast causal like Chilis etc.

Griffs is more of a local spot.  I'm not sure I'd recommend going there unless you're in the area and really really hungry.

Batanga is a pretty cool restaurant downtown with a nice patio.  I'd go there instead for more of a latin flare.

For Tex-Mex food you have tons of options.  I'd probably keep it simple and hit El Tiempo in Montrose (about a 5 min drive for you)

Uchi is prob my favorite restaurant in Houston.  Amazing sushi/japanese food.  Also in Montrose.

Pepper Twins for great Chinese.

Lankford Grocery for the best biggest and baddest burger you ever had (only open to 2:30pm)
