Houston Texans In season Thread 2010 (1 Viewer)

its not going to be an issue of Houston going after him, its going to be an issue of him not having any desire to go to Houston. Money won't be an issue, a player of his caliber every team will open the wallet including the Texans. I just don't see him wanting to play here when there are real contenders who will pay him just as much.

Good point. I do think it is important however, for the Texans to make the effort to get him even if he signs somewhere else. The first step tobeing viewed as real contenders, is making a public display that you are trying hard to improve your team. That helps your league image and alsohelps the attitude of your current players. If Asomugha signs somewhere else, then they should go after Champ Bailey. Adding Phillips as coach and a veteran CB prescence like Bailey will be a great first step in improving the defense.

The more I think about the Wade hire, I really think that Kubiak has at least another two years on Houston as HC, no matter his record in '11. He has a built in excuse that the D is changing styles and it takes a couple of years to get the right personnel in place.

Mario's not an OLB, he'd be better suited as a DE if we went to a 3-4. Actually, I think he's best suited to be a full-time LE (strong side) in a 4-3. He's 6'7 and 290 lbs., he'd be way too lumbering outside in a 3-4. I think you'd see:LE Antonio SmithNT not on rosterRE Mario WilliamsOLB Brian CushingOLB Connor BarwinILB Demeco RyansILB Zac Diles/Darryl Sharpton Obviously NT is the most glaring need, you can't really expect Cody, Okoye, or Mitchell to man that spot. I don't think any of them fit that scheme. OLB would surely need some more depth. You might have to play around and see if Cushing's better outside or inside in this scheme, and Barwin's coming off a season-wrecking injury. Then there's the whole issue of the secondary, which needs 4 new players. Whatever we do, we're a long way from fixing it. Sounds like a broken record year after year. Personally, I think these rumors all suck unless they involve canning the entire regime. This would be Kubiak's 3rd defensive coordinator. How much freakin' patience are we supposed to have? I might have to declare myself a free agent fan, and I sure don't want to do that.
When I heard that Wade was going to Houston, a couple things popped into my mind. First: Houston just got a LOT more dangerous. Wade DOES make defenses a lot tougher. He WILL make that unit a lot more effective. Paired with their excellent offense, Houston is going to be TOUGH.The second thing I thought was: Mario becomes the new Bruce Smith. Yes, the guy who is the NFL all time sacks leader. He was a 3-4 end under Wade in Buffalo for several years. And was a beast with bunch of sacks. Mario becomes Bruce reincarnate.Okoye can play the nose. Wade often mentioned how he'd adapt his defense to fit the skill set of the nose man. From Ratliff in Dallas, to Jamal Williams in SD, to Pat Williams in Buffalo, to Kragen in Denver.

I question whether Okoye has the size or the attitude to play the nose in a 3-4. My guess is the Texans will look elsewhere to find their nose tackle and that Okoye is done in Houston. The only reason I can see them keeping him is to avoid admitting they were wrong when they drafted him. I would say there isa small chance that he can turn things around if he gets the right coaching.

Okoye can't play NT. He has no strength. He's a lousy 3 technique. The regime needs to wisen up, he sucks and is a bust. Mitchell has a better base and might be able to be a rotational guy there, but we've got to go get somebody. I'd like Cushing and DeMeco to play the inside LB spots with Sharpton spelling both. I'd get some kind of free agent NT, OLB, and CB. I'm OK with a stopgap-type old guy at NT, but we have got to emphasize speed, speed, and more speed at our OLB and CB spots. Our defense is freaking slow. I'd also like Glover Quin to move to one of the safety spots. Anybody know a reliable free agent list out there? I'd like a sizeable upgrade at OLB and CB to start with, then fill in with lesser free agents and the draft....

Until the CBA is resolved there is not such an animal. Some lists are using the previous 4 years versus the 2010 uncapped 6 year. The 7 plus year veterans will accurate, but there maybe a whole new ballgame for it is said and done.
