Houston Texans Pre-Season thread (1 Viewer)

I'm not sure I see how he is an upgrade at backup QB, unless they figured out how to make some kind of Voltron out of ####ty QBs.

The Texans filled out their 53-man roster on Sunday by claiming two players — Oakland linebacker David Nixon and Dallas cornerback Jamar Wall.

Nixon grew up in College Station and played at Brigham Young. He signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent last year and was active for three games.

Wall, who played at Texas Tech, was a sixth-round pick by the Cowboys. He becomes the sixth cornerback on the roster after Glover Quin, Kareem Jackson, Brice McCain, Antwaun Molden and Sherrick McManis.

Meanwhile, New England claimed Texans offensive tackle Steve Maneri off waivers.

Schefter reporting that according to a "league source", the Texans were one of the first teams to contact Leinart.

Sources: Texans go after Matt LeinartThe Houston Texans have emerged as a leading candidate to sign former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The Texans were one of the first teams to contact Leinart after he was released Saturday and have been among the most interested teams, according to the sources. The Cardinals parted ways with the former Heisman Trophy winner days after Leinart went public with his frustration over being replaced by Cleveland castoff Derek Anderson.Leinart complained he had outplayed Anderson and that his problems with coach Ken Whisenhunt were "probably away from football." That led to a meeting with Whisenhunt the following day. Although he was unhappy that Leinart took his issues public, Whisenhunt praised how the quarterback has handled things."The one thing I want to make very clear is how professional Matt was about the whole situation," the coach said. "I was very impressed with his conversation with me. He thanked the organization, the ownership, for all the time and effort that they had invested in him. He felt like he had gotten better and he had learned a lot and it meant a lot to me to hear him say that."Leinart played two series in the final preseason game on Thursday night.Arizona thought it had a steal when Leinart, who led Southern California to two national championships and a third title game appearance, fell to the Cardinals at the No. 10 overall pick in 2006. He started 11 games as a rookie under then-coach Dennis Green, then the first five the following season under new coach Ken Whisenhunt. But the big left-hander then went down with a broken collarbone and Kurt Warner took over.Warner finished his career with two spectacular seasons, leading Arizona to consecutive NFC West titles, an incredible run to the Super Bowl and a 51-45 overtime victory over Green Bay in a playoff thriller last season.Leinart threw for 3,893 yards with 14 touchdowns and 20 interceptions with Arizona.
I'm fairly eh about the situation. Which to clarify means... I would like the Texans to pick up a bit more of a veteran backup than Orlovsky. But I was hoping for something more than Leinart. Or at least, something other than Leinart. I'd rather have a Brunell/Kitna/Bulger type guy who was a starter for multiple years and has actual game experience but is at the end of his career. I probably would rather have Leinart than Orlovsky assuming Leinart isn't getting a huge contract... but it's not by much of a margin at all. I just think Orlovsky stares down his receiver too much. I think Leinart would probably be an improvement there, but he's got other deficiencies too.

I think the biggest reason I don't want Leinart is because of his lack of leadership. The media at least made it seem that he had no supporters in the lockerroom and his teammates did not have confidence in him. We don't need that here. We need a guy the players can work with, not a guy that can become a cancer. I too wish they would have gotten Bulger in the off season. Leinart doesn't have the arm to stretch the field for AJ and Jacoby, which would be a huge waste in our system. He would just be a checkdown king to our 27 TEs, or the running back. We need a big arm.

For all the flaws, Leinart is the best option available (unless I overlooked somebody). Not excited about him, but I get the why him over the JT O'Sullivans of the world.
I totally agree. I haven't liked Leinart since the USC vs UCLA game where pretty much all of his short comings were exposed. But considering whats out there why not. There's always a chance that some teams loses their qb to injury and come calling. Also it might help him to work with a coach that was a former qb and cant help him with what he might be doing wrong.

On a different note i remember Rodgers coming in with a somewhat of a noodle arm but now the guy has a rocket. Can you really improve arm strength because thats what Leinart needs more than anything.

The Texans reached an injury settlement with kicker Kris Brown and restructured the contract of backup quarterback Dan Orlovsky on Wednesday.

When the Texans chose Neil Rackers over Brown last week, Brown was placed on injured reserve until they could reach an injury settlement. He had been kicking despite suffering from plantar fasciitis in his right foot.

Brown, a 12-year veteran, is an unrestricted free agent who can sign with any team.

When Orlovsky threw two first-half interceptions in the last preseason game against Tampa Bay, the Texans signed Matt Leinart to compete with him for the backup job.

Leinart signed a one-year contract for $630,000. He can earn $23,125 for every game he’s designated as the No. 2 quarterback. His contract maxes out at $1 million.

Orlovsky's restructured deal calls for him to make a base salary of $850,000 — a reduction from $2.25 million. He can make up the difference by earning $25,000 for every game he's the No. 2 quarterback.

Orlovsky also can earn $100,000 for every game he's the starting quarterback — a maximum of 10 games and $1 million.

In 2011, Orlovsky was scheduled to earn $2.75 mllion. Instead, he receives a base salary of $1.375 million. He can earn that back if he's No. 2 for one game this season. He will be the No. 2 quarterback for Sunday’s game against Indianapolis, which means he won’t be taking a cut in pay next year.
