How are cigarette companies still in business? (1 Viewer)

People still really smoking cigarettes in 2014? I see a guy smoking on the street and it feels like 1985. Are that many people stupid?

Foreign markets are propping them up. I imagine they'll quickly move into e-cigs in a big way if those are deemed "safe"

Because our state and federal governments are now 50/50 partners with the tobacco companies and just like them they make so much money off the cigarettes and chew (and all the disease they cause) they will never ever outlaw them.

It is hard to believe. I really enjoyed smoking too but quit like 10 yrs ago for obvious reasons.

Believe our President is one of those stupid people as you say.

Teenagers and young people always try taboo things. They get addicted and once they are hooked it's very difficult to quit. Don't know how many times I tried before I finally did 15 years ago but it was a high number.

I invest in a fund that puts a lot of money in the cigarette companies. My recent returns have been excellent.

You mentioned e-cigs; I think the next logical step for these guys is the marijuana business. If it ever gets federally legalized, they'd be turning their fields over from tobacco to weed within days.

It's stupid because you're old. (disclosure: I'm old, and I agree it's stupid.)

But let's not pretend that when you/me/we/that guy was smoking in the 90s that you didn't know it was bad for you. You just didn't care.

I still like to have probably 2-3 cigars a month, so the tobacco industry has me as a customer also.

Is is definitely something that's gravitating towards being a lower class addition rather than a higher society/everybody thing like it was 40+ years ago.

I for one welcome it as I enjoy the teeth whitening and periodontal disease business that it brings.

Not if numbnuts keep voting to outlaw e-cigs everywhere. Technology created a win-win situation for smokers and non - smokers but the nanny staters who want to "win" the smoking debate at all costs are going to take away a major impetus for smokers to convert to the non - carcinogenic substitute.

Maybe legalizing weed can put cigarettes out of business.i honestly can't understand why kids even try cigarettes.

:goodposting:

From a public health standpoint, the government should be doing everything it can to encourage smokers to switch over to e-cigs. The fact that this industry is getting harassed instead is mind-boggling.

I spent a week in NYC last month and couldn't believe the amount of smokers on the street. It seemed like every group of people I walked past or with had people smoking. I guess I expected different from a city who was among the first to ban smoking indoors and has such a high cost of living. Also, cigs were more than $15 a pack.

Actually there are still detectable levels of carcinogenic chemicals in E-cigs. They use propylene glycol which is known to increase your risk for asthma when breathed in. Further vaping itself is known to cause respiratory issues. Several of the nicotine refills were tested and were found to have chemicals in them that were toxic to human cells. Not to mention the metals you inhale off the heating filament. I could go on. Don't kid yourself with this is some safe alternative.

Better or worse than "regular" cigarettes?

We don't really know do we? What we know now is they aren't "safe". We don't know how unsafe they are and we won't until we can get some long term testing done. They are still a nicotine delivery system. Nicotine is still a deadly poison.

Would you mind providing links to some of this? Not doubting you, just that the GF puffs away on an eCig and I'd like to give her some reading material and I'm not sure "Guy from the football forum" is going to be very convincing

Yeah, and condoms don't protect against STDs as reliably as abstinence. But teens aren't going to not have sex and smokers aren't going to quit smoking.
