How early is it OK to cut the grass on a Saturday morning (gas-powered lawn mower)? (1 Viewer)

What say ye?

  • Cut it as early as you want, it's your lawn and your neighbours would be more productive if they did

Seasonal variant of my earlier thread, which I got some great feedback on (thanks).

Suburbia, so your lawnmower noise will definitely be the loudest thing at that time.

Assume it's going to be 80 degrees and sunny by noon.  Not obscenely hot, but hot enough to make cutting the grass in the morning preferable.

7:00 is sort of on the border, imo, depends on the neighbors and their sleeping habits.  8:00 is go time no matter what.

I have a battery powered mower because if is much quitter than gas, and I am an early riser, and I like to get my chores out of the way.  Still before 8 is too early.

I do not pump out and power wash the pond before 9.  That power washer is noisey.  No blowers, trimmers or power saws before then either.

i mounted a four barrel holly carb on my briggs and stratton and now when i rev that sucker up the whole neighborhood feels the pain so normally about 9 am and i also crank some boston on a philco when i am mowing so i figure that is just polite take that to the bank brochachos

One of the reasons I have considered a battery-powered mower was so that I could cut the grass earlier and not worry as much about waking the neighbours.  I love to get my chores done early, as well.  If I didn't feel like a jerk for doing-so, I'd cut the grass at sunrise (currently 5AM in my region).

get one of those old timey mowers that spins when you push it no noise so you can mow straight through the night take that to the bank bromigos

I'll be starting mine by 8am tomorrow - riding lawn mower and push mower at the same time (my 13yo uses the riding mower).  If we waited much longer we'd bake - it will be around 90 degrees with 90% humidity by 10 and it takes a couple hours between mowing and weed whacking.

I actually have one of those for when I feel compelled to cut at 5 in the morning so I can finish and get about my day.  $89 at Home Depot a few years ago.

8 is borderline IMO. I voted anytime after 9. Neighborhoods may vary.
Agreed.  I wouldn't fire up a mower before 9:00 in my neighborhood but mainly because I was likely pounding beers on my neighbor's deck the night before.

Neighbors and I have a deal with our dogs and lawn mowers.. between 9pm and 9am we shouldn't hear either.

Better question is how late on a Saturday night should you be gunning your engine "testing" it while working on it?

How do we feel about mowing during the dinner hour, and what would you define that as?
I try not to mow if my neighbors are grilling. Other than that, dinner time doesnt matter to me. Some people are busy at night and eat at 5. Others eat when they are in for the night at 8.

Dinner hour doesn't bother me.  I learned to realize everyone has different schedules and can't always do it when they want.  The only time I won't mow is if my neighbor has people over and hanging out on his deck.

Same here. If people are eating or have a gathering then I try to hold off however not sure why as my one neighbor is a yard nazi and/or has add and needs to mow his lawn once every three days regardless of whether it needs it or not.  Dude even remowed his lawn a day after his wife mowed cause she didn't use the right mowing pattetn (she mowed horizontally and he mows diagonally).

I digress though and voted for anytime after 8am (I think thats what our city noise ordinance states too).

People who mow their lawns before 9:00am on a weekend should be shot.

Just because your life sucks doesn't mean everyone else's does.

I propose a rule, or a law.  Any lawn cutting before 10 am must be done by a nubile young woman, aged 17 to 25, who is a size two, an 8 on the looks scale, or more, while in a bikini.

Depends on the weather.  If it's a beautiful sleeping weather night/morning (people have their windows open) and the day isn't supposed to be bad 9AM.  If it's a muggy night/morning and going to be a wretched  day.....start it an hour earlier and get it done.

I wait till 8:30 usually. My neighbor is obsessive about his lawn. He doesn't care if we are out eating on the patio. In fact I think he waits till we come out. Last 3 times we ate outside he's been mowing, trimming and chain sawing.

8 am is the standard time for outside work to begin.  That is normally when contractors begin to roof, cut grass, cut down trees, etc.

Reel push mower, anytime I please. Battery-powered weed eater to follow, that can't make that much noise I figure.

Tell the lawn Nazi that if he wants to be doing it right then he shouldn't use the same mowing pattern each time. Better for the grass.
