How good a team could you build with the first 50 picks of a draft? (1 Viewer)

Say the NFL added an expansion franchise, and decided to give them the first 50-some picks(whatever a full roster is) of the NFL Draft to build their roster. Say this year's draft for discussion's sake. The first year, the team is not allowed to sign any other players besides the players they draft(except for injury replacements). Following their first season, they would carry out business as normal re: draft picks, signing free agents, etc.

How well do you think this team would do? Would they compete right away, or how many years would it take?

I do that on Madden when I get bored. We always suck the first year or two but then get better and better.

And you can't sign free agents after your first season, cause that would be cheating. ;)

It would take a few years, but such a team would surely be stellar.

For example, here's a team based on the first 50 picks of the 2001 draft:

QB: Brees

RB: Tomlinson

WR: Chad Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Santana Moss

TE: Heap

OL: Matt Light, Leonard Davis, Steve Hutchinson and others.

DE: Justin Smith, Aaron Schobel

DT: Marcus Stroud, Richard Seymour

LB: Dan Morgan -- weak year for LBs I guess

CB: Nate Clements, Will Allen

S: Not drafted early, but our hypothetical team could have had Adrian Wilson and Dwight Smith

Looks good to me.

bad first year ... the O-Line would need seasoning... very good after that.

It would be a major headache to see who would be the starters .... training camp would be intense... imagine all 1st year players all competing for a starting spot and roster spot.

The D-Line could be phenominal in a couple years ...

running 4-3 ... Long and Vernon G as the DE's / Ellis and Dorsey in the Middle.. WOW

Obviously the first 50 picks of the draft wouldn't be the same first 50 guys that will be taken by teams this weekend. I'd guess the breakdown would be something like this:

QB - 2-3

RB - 3

FB - 1

WR - 5

TE - 2

OT - 4

OG - 3

G/C - 1

C - 2

DT - 4

DE - 3

ILB - 4

OLB - 4

CB - 5

Saf - 3

P -1

K - 1

That would be 48. Then we'd probably take a long snapper and maybe a return guy if we don't have that covered yet.
