How many RB are drafted each year? (1 Viewer)

So an average of 20.1 RB are drafted each season when we take out the FB.

Average draft pick invested on RB by round:

3.1 1st round picks

2.5 2nd round picks

2.9 3rd round picks

3.5 4th round picks

1.8 5th round picks

2.6 6th round picks

3.5 7th round picks

note I counted players like Najeh Davenport and Le'Ron McClain as RB even if listed as FB.

Just thought this might be interesting for those trying to project where the 2009 RB might land. 2008 was the deepest the position has been drafted over the last 10 years. So there should be more young depth around the league than most seasons. 2005 was the 2nd highest season for RB drafted.

I will reply to this after the draft so we can see where the draft class stacks up, above or below the average season.

Thoughts welcome. I did go through each team trying to evaluate by need what round they might take a RB. But I need to try to tweak it more I think to fit historical norms. I will add that here once I am done messing with it.

Nice list. Wasn't Spencer Larsen a LB last year when drafted though?
I am not familar with him. ;)This is still kind of a mess. But what I was thinking about before looking at this.1. Lions. Not likely. Perhaps a speed back to compliment Smith in round 3-52. Rams. Not likely. Too many other holes to fill.3. Cheifs. I don't see them drafting a RB unless Johnson is being let go.What could the Cheifs get for Johnson in trade?4. Seahawks. Big need at RB here. Round 2 or round 3? Who?5. Cleveland. The Browns have an extra 2nd round pick (18) but no 3rd. Jamal Lewis will be 30. What RB might still be there at pick 104(their 4th round pick).6. Bengals. With Benson as the starter they really need a RB at some point. the Bengals have 4 picks in the top 100. I think one of those picks will be a RB.7. Raiders. Pretty deep at the position assuming McFad is back healthy. Doubt a RB is taken early by the Raiders if at all.8. Jaguars. With Fred now gone I expect Greg Jones to get an expanded role. A 3rd RB could come through the draft.9. Green Bay. May still be looking for an upgrade but not a priority with Grant and Jackson still being young. They do have an extra 3rd round pick though and have drafted WR when it wasn't a need before.10. SF. Could use a backup to Gore. Don't see a pick at RB until at least rd 3.11. Bills. Seem set with Lynch and Jackson. But the Bills have 2 1st round picks and 2 4th round picks. If a RB they like is there at pick 28 or 42 would they take him?12. Denver. This team has needs all over the place. Including RB. I doubt one of their 1st day picks will be a RB but they have 2 3rd round picks. Perhaps a RB there or at pick 114?13. Redskins. With Portis the starter and known backup Betts behind him this is one of the most settled backfields in the league. The Skins only have 2 picks before round 5. Likely the earliest they would look at a RB if at all.14. Saints. Been rumored to possibly consider Wells at pick 14. Doubt the Saints do this with their only pick before round 4 if at all.15. Texans. Would a RB like Green be taken by the Texans in round 3 to compliment Slaton? Or perhaps one of their 4th round picks?x16. Chargers. Have no 2nd round pick. Have a lot of money tied up on LT and Sproles. With the Chargers having 3 4th round picks, that looks like a good time to add RB depth.x17. Jets. Jets could use a RB to take over for Thomas Jones. This is one of the 1st teams I see possibly taking a RB in round 1. If not a later round RB is even more likely.x18. Bronco's again.x19. Bucs. With Grahm, Ward and possibly Carnell Williams I don't see a big need for RB here. bucs have 3 7th round picks so some RB here or in round 6 is all I really expect.x20. Lions again.x21. Eagles. Could use a replacement or compliment to Westbrook. Lost Buckhalter to Denver. Maybe their 2nd or 3rd pick? If not then the Eagles have 4 5th round picks. So a RB is pretty much a lock by round 5.x22. Vikings. With AD and Chester this is one of the most settled backfields in the league. With no 4th round pick and other needs I don't see the Vikings drafting a RB before round 7.x23. Patriots. The Pats definitly have a need at RB. They did bring in Fred Taylor. But Taylor is 33 years old. Not likely to be a Dillon resurgance. Maroney has played well at times but he cannot be counted on as their feature RB. Perhaps most importantly Kevin Faulk is now 33 and they need a understudy. Patriots pick at 23 is a possibility, or with any of their picks in the 2nd round (34) (47) (58). At this point I see the Pats as the most likely team to draft a RB. What if the pick is Donald Brown? x24. Falcons. With Turner and Norwood this backfield is pretty set.x25. Dolphins. Tuna did not bring back Riwi. Brown cannot be counted on alone. A Parcells back likely this year. They have 2 picks in the 2nd round.x26. Ravens. They added Rice and Le'Ron McClain last year when they already had McGahee. All 3 RB had over 100 carries. I don't think there is room for a RB here.x27. Colts. Addai does not look like a feature RB. So the Colts could go RB round 1 depending on who is still there. I think several of these rookie RB would be an upgrade for them.x28. Bills again.x29. Giants. Has depth with Jacobs, Bradshaw, Ware.A later pick for depth probable from round 3 on.x30. Titans. I think there are enough RB here that another one is unlikely.x31. Cardinals. Badly need a RB to replace Edge.x32. Steelers. Not likely to take a RB with FWP, Mendenhall and MM to call on.Of the teams with no pick in the 1st round.Chicago. Has other needs. Possibly their 4th round pick or one of their 2 5ths.Dallas. With Barber, Felix Jones and Choice I don't see a pick being needed here.Carolina. They don't have enough carries for Williams and Stewart as it is. Very doubtful they take anything other than special teams. So possible pick investment in RB?1st 5 - jets-eagles-patriots-colts-cardinals2nd 11 - seahawks-browns-bengals-jets-eagles-patriots-colts-cardinals-cheifs-dolphins-jaguars3rd 19 - seahawks-browns-bengals-jets-eagles-patriots-colts-cardinals-cheifs-dolphins-bills-broncos-lions-giants-texans-49ers-Packers-jaguars4th 26 - seahawks-browns-bengals-jets-eagles-patriots-colts-cardinals-cheifs-dolphins-bills-broncos-lions-giants-texans-49ers-Packers-jaguars-Vikings-chargers-saints-bills-bears5th 26 - seahawks-browns-bengals-jets-eagles-patriots-colts-cardinals-cheifs-dolphins-bills-broncos-lions-giants-texans-49ers-Packers-jaguars-Vikings-chargers-saints-bills-rams- redskins-bears6th 26 - seahawks-browns-bengals-jets-eagles-patriots-colts-cardinals-cheifs-dolphins-bills-broncos-lions-giants-texans-49ers-Packers-jaguars-Vikings-chargers-saints-bills-rams- redskins-bears7th 26- seahawks-browns-bengals-jets-eagles-patriots-colts-cardinals-cheifs-dolphins-bills-broncos-lions-giants-texans-49ers-Packers-jaguars-Vikings-chargers-saints-bills-rams- redskins-bearsI doubt this many will be drafted as that would be equal to last years record of 26 RB. Some of these teams will not get their guy. So if I eliminate the possibilities assuming this is an average RB draft class by subtracting the average number of RB taken by round from that list it would look more like. Total backs taken by round and the teams it might be1st 3 -jets-patriots-cardinals2nd 6 -eagles-colts-seahawks-3rd 9 -browns-bengals-broncos4th 13 -texans-49ers-dolphins-lions5th 15 -jaguars-chargers6th 18 -cheifs-saints-rams-7th 23 Packers-Vikings-bills-bears-giantsNow I know this is totaly subjective and just a judgement call on my part what teams might take a RB and how high? I am sure this will be wrong. There are many more possibilities than there will be matches. But each time a team makes a pick then they could likely be crossed off the list. A couple teams might take 2 RB as some did last year but I doubt many. Now if we use the NFL.com rankings for where they are drafted you might have something like this:1st 3 -jets-patriots-cardinals - Moreno/Wells/D. Brown2nd 6 -eagles-colts-seahawks- McCoy/S. Greene/A. Brown3rd 9 -browns-bengals-broncos - Jennings/Peerman/Ringer4th 13 -texans-49ers-dolphins-lions - Coffee/K.Sheets/Bernard Scott 5th 15 -jaguars-chargers -Gartrell Johnson/James Davis6th 18 -cheifs-saints-rams- Tyrell Sutton/J.Johnson/Lucky7th 23 Packers-Vikings-bills-bears-giants Kimble/Chris Ogbannaya/FB or whoever else you like. How do people like these possible matchings?

Looking at these lists, I think taking a RB from round 5 or later is kind of a waste of time. Not sure of success rate at other positions from that point on but I rather take my chances with OL or anything but RB after the 4th is done.

I agree those are the dregs and very few have had successful careers. The success rate falls each round but there have been quality players drafted as late as the 6th round. Situation is key and a lower pick who has success might not maintain it long as they will always be threatened by more talented compitition.

Interesting. I think the need for RBs is greater this year with the wealth of 30 plus RBs in the NFL. I also get the impression that there are many good second day RB prospects. Maybe it will be year like 2003 when 8 RBs went in the 4th round.

If any of the top 3 RBs are sitting there, I wouldn't completely rule out the Chargers spending a 1st on one.

AJ Smith went to see Wells, Moreno, and Donald Brown in person. Chargers are definitely a candidate to take a first round back.

I have read that too and yes I think it could happen. However I give my reasoning why I do not think RB will be their 1st round pick and why they might wait until round 4 to address the need.

17 total RB taken (I eliminated FBs) so this draft was 3 less RB taken than average.1st round 32nd round 13rd round 34th round 35th round 16th round 47th round 41.5 less in the 2nd round than average..8 less in the 5th round than average1.4 more in the 6th round than averageEverything else was pretty much the same.Based on this I would say the 2009 RB crop was 3 players weaker than average and that lack of another 2nd round pick (where a falling talent is usualy taken) is the most key difference. Teams saw 4 RB worth taking on the 1st day compared to 5.6 which is the average. So this draft is 1-2 elite prospects light.I dunno why in the 5th round RBs are not very popular. The lack of another 2nd rounder was made up in round 6. Huge difference. So while I do like Moreno better than most prospects over the past 10 years I would have to say this group as a whole looks below average.
