They are now just toying with the Yankees, running all night on one of the best pickoff artists in MLB history to finish off the sweep. It's pretty clear the Sox think they don't need all 27 outs to beat the lowly Yankees.

The Sox are the model MLB franchise and I'm trying to figure out how long it'll take the Yankees to catch them.

I'm also trying to keep myself entertained until the Rays decide to string a couple of wins together.

Before the Yankees win one? I'd say the Sox will probably appear in at least 5 of the next 10 and should be able to win at least 3 if not 4.

The Sox are the model MLB franchise...
This much is true.Find an antiquated ballpark that absolutely sucks but push its "charming" reputation, charge an arm & a leg for admission, and conduct business in a huge market in a sport with no salary cap.Why no other MLB franchises subscribe to this theory is beyond me; it's easy as pie.

Huge Yankees fan here, and I voted 1.

I think the Sox have the quality pitching to make at least one more run in the next few years. Even with Big Papi in decline and the loss of Manny, they still have Jason Bay, Youk, and Drew to supply enough power to go along with Ellsbury and Pedroia's speed/hitting.

Their offense isn't what it once was, but their pitching is incredible. I think they'll survive the AL East 1 out of the next 3 years and come away with 1 more world title before the current NY additions gel and make a run.

I do expect the Yankees to come away with 1 more title before Jeter retires though. They have the talent, especially if Melky and Phil Hughes turn out to be legit and have finally "arrived."

It's hard to say though.

The Rays are the model franchise, not the Sox. The Sox are more like the Yankees than Boston fans want to admit. Boston has just had better luck/skill at developing and acquiring their pitchers. Also - Garza and the TB bullpen just 1-hit the Sox in a 13-0 blowout. :D

I agree, dollar for dollar, the Rays are the better franchise. That statement was just taking into account all factors, including the payroll advantage the Sox will always have over the Rays. I just think the Sox have the best combination in the league of salary potential, player development, and GM.

I would agree, but that doesn't really make them the model franchise because its a model almost nobody can even attempt to replicate. Without the payroll, you can't do what Boston is doing and only 1 other team really has the payroll. For the other 28 teams, they're looking to teams who are successful without the huge payroll to model themselves after.

Agreed. If I were given the reigns to an MLB franchise, I'd look at the Angels, the Twins and the Rays for models of success.

It's Finless. And you think it might be shtick?

Yep, these guys have been racking up the titles lately. Packing the stadiums as well. In 2008 Baseball America Listed the Rays and Sox as numbers 1 and 2 for farm systems. The Twinks were at 18 and the Angels were at 10. Now given the success the Red Sox have enjoyed over the last 8 years (2 World Series - 2 ALCS) to be in that position is impressive. Not to mention they've sold out every game for something like 3 years. Sure the Rays have the far and away best Far in baseball but they had to finish last for a decade to get there. Putting these teams above the Sox is ridiculous. Let the Rays sustain something for a while then put them there. Just as the Patriots are the Model NFL franchise the Sox are the model MLB franchise....deal with it. I know its painful but facts are facts.

No.The Rays are the "model" because they have liabilities most other teams have. The Sox don't. Most teams can't slap down a $130 million dollar payroll, but almost all can be constrained into a 60M+ one.Let the Sox make the World Series with a $30M payroll while facing two teams with $130M+ in their same division and then come talk to me about who the model franchise is.

Do you even hear yourself type? Maybe if the Ray were the model they could pony up a few more bucks. Shtick aside the Rays are a great team but they have suffered through a decade of losses, empty stands and number 1 picks. Hard to call a franchise "model" when the stadium was empty up until under a year ago. Hell they could never even get a nationally televised game. There's more to a model than going to the world series once.

Oh, so the model is nationally televised games? The point you're still missing is that the Sox have large advantages most, if not all, other teams lack. They can't be the model for that very reason. I don't think you're this thick, so I'm not sure what to say to you.Other teams can replicate the Rays. Other teams cannot replicate the Red Sox. This isn't difficult.

I would even say the Cardinals as well. Just a packed stadium and consistent winning, without anything near the Yankees payroll. Of course it helps to have Albert Pujols.
