How many years in did you start in money leagues? (1 Viewer)

I was just wondering how long some people played fantasy football before they started in at least some kind of money league.

I was planning on starting one this year because it is my third year and I was obsessed with it least year and knew a lot of stuff, and figured it was a waste to do all that effort in free leagues, but because of the lockout this year I didn't really study as much about the players.

I just don't want to start too early, but then waste time with free leagues either. I'm in one good free keeper league that I'm staying in because I did a lot with trades these past few years, only problem is the people aren't really easy to contact.

I'd like to join a small (maybe $5 buy-in) league to start.

Also, do most people do money dynasty/keeper leagues or usually redraft leagues?

1988 was my fist fantasy football season and it was a money league with my brother and 6 other guys. Finished 3rd and won some money. USA Today was used to keep scores and stats. We didn't have PC's back then so USA Today was our fantasy bible. I prefer to play in redrafts for money but I'm also in a 3 keeper and a dynasty league for cash. They're all fun.

I for one started on Fantasy baseball on yahoo back in 1998. I then picked up Fantasy football also on Yahoo in around 2002 or 2003?

Got into my first money league in 2006.

Been playing since early 2000s. Money league from the start. Redraft. It is still my only money league, and the one I have the most fun in because i know everybody, but now I do a handful of dynasty leagues as well.

I'm trying to start another money league when I get back to school this year as well.

So I have been in one sine year one. Not high stakes or anything though.

The first league I joined (a league that a friend of mine was already an owner) was a money league. The next year I started a league with my college buddies that was a money league right from the start.

That (re-draft) league is still going and all three of my dynasty leagues (one with mostly the same people and two internet ones) are all money leagues. My hometown ones are $300 entry fees and the two internet dyansties are $50 and $100.

Personally, I started playing in free leagues off an on for a few years (espn mainly). Then about 2004 my college friends started a 12 team redraft league. Its always been $20-30 to enter. I got pretty good at that winning about half the years, but really less than half of the guys do anything more than check out a few rankings the week of the draft to prepare, so last year I decided to join a $50 dynasty league with a group of veteran, knowledgeable owners. It was fun and I decided to join another one ($100) this year. I'd recommend trying to find a league with at least a $20 entry fee so that you at least know the other owners aren't going to stop checking their team and setting their roster halfway through. (Not to mention, I don't know if I've ever even seen a $5 league, $20 is kind of the minimum you'll regularly see.) If you're going to spend time on it, that's really not much money (less than $2 per week) and then you at least have a $100+ payout. Lastly, I'd probably start out with re-draft for a couple years for a number of reasons: 1. its a bit easier and you'll probably be up against less expert owners;2. If you have a crappy dynasty startup draft, you could have a bad team for a long time, which isn't fun;3. If you decide fantasy football isn't really for you, it is easy to leave a re-draft league after one year and not leave the other owners in a lurch. They can always fill your spot. In a dynasy/keeper, its much harder because most people don't want to take over someone else's team, so if you quit after the 1st or 2nd year, its not cool to the other owners.Hope that helps. By the way, there is a whole forum here of leagues looking for owners. I'd recommend checking that out as a way to see what's out there, the different prices, etc. If you are only playing $20 entry fee, you should be able to find one that uses a free website and thus pays out 100% (i.e. if there are 12 owners at $20, winner gets $200, 2nd gets $40).

Started in the late 90s with free leagues and joined my first money league in 2003 or 2004. I have since dumped that one b/c the "rules" didn't exist and some BS went down, which was unfortunate b/c it was a local, live draft (beer & bbq) that was so much fun on draft day.

Up to 3 $$$ leagues now and would have started a 4th if not for the lockout. Will also be looking to take my first dive into a dynasty league next year & looking for a $$$ one.

well that's what I do, except I read them for weeks/months before rather than a few days before

First year of fantasy football in 1991 and it was a $20 league. I was commish as I heard about it first from some guys on the collge dorm floor I lived on.

I started on yahoo in 99. Played my first money league on Ant Sports in 2001 and then Xpert Sports after that. Started playing werewolf - found this place. Started playing addicts and phenoms leagues mostly. Still have a sort of hold over league from the Xpert sports days.

I personally don't enjoy keeper/dynasty leagues. I took over a Zealots league team and did it for 3 seasons, didn't really enjoy it. I played in a salary cap league that folded, wouldn't have left it but I didn't enjoy it much either. Point is it depends on what you enjoy. I enjoy the draft as much as if not more than the regular season, so to me keeper/dynasty just isn't as fun.

My first league was around 1998, and was a money league as well. We used USA Today for scoring, and had a few funky scoring practices. Game wining/losing field goals +/-, scored in tiers for yardage every 10 yards I believe, QB lost points if an INT was taken to the house, I think fumbles went the same way.. We fooled around with the scoring in some other ways as well and didn't really conform until a few of us started playing on line.
