American males in this age bracket, you really don't come across him in high school or college. He was already for older people when we were in our teens and twenties. Someone had to introduce him to you. 

I love him, but I was one of about two people in my high school who knew who he was. A buddies older sister introduced us to bands like him, XTC, even David Bowie. Bowie was massive but if you are under the age of 50, you barely remember Let's Dance.

I like some of his songs (personal favorite is probably "Veronica" and probably have a couple in some playlists but haven't actively sought his music out.

But, for some reason, THIS is the first thing that popped into my head when I saw his name in the thread title.
