How much does injuries influence FF? (1 Viewer)

Is winning in Fantasy Football more about avoiding injuries with your key players than many of us want to admit?

I have been playing FF for a good while now and have noticed that teams in my leagues (mostly ten and twelve teams sizes) that avoid injury to their key players seem to win the championship. I know everyone now is saying "Well NO ###. " But wait.

For myself I have lost Clinton Portis and Mcnabb this year and it looks like I am done for the year in two of my leagues ; these are two players I have targeted in my drafts this year and now although I will still get a playoff spot it will be a quick exit. I have won three championships and have finished second about three other times and of my championship teams the one thing they all had in common was a NO key injuries.

The point of this post is not to talk about my teams or a venting thread but assessing injury risk as a drafting/ranking factor. I think that in todays NFL injuries play a huge roll in determining which teams are successful ; I am beginning to believe that is true of FF. I always have the backup of my key players however they rarely give you the points needed to replace the points lost. - (Again I know -"No Kidding").

I know injuries can not be predicted but I for one will be very wary of McNabb/Portis/Alexander next year.

From my experience, injuries aren't the worst thing. When a guy's out, you know he's out and he can be replaced by someone and you're getting those points.

The worst thing is an underperforming player. Because you keep starting him thinking he'll turn it around and it just never happens. These are the people that sink your season. Randy Moss is a perfect example. I finally benched him this week but my replacement points weren't much either.

Injuries can be a killer and people that don't believe that certain players are just more injury prone are crazy. Anyone that didn't think that McNabb was going to get hurt at some point was just asking for trouble. I was certainly envious of the numbers he was putting up earlier in the season, but it's now after our trading deadline and the owner in my one league is essentially done now. He is the #2 team overall but McNabb was so huge for him that without him he's a completely different team.

Sometimes it's not even the injuries to your players that are killers. For instance, it's no coincidence that the Rams had their worst offensive output in the last how many years one game after Pace is out for the year. I'd knock down all Rams a good bit the rest of the way. Same with the Eagles starters with McNabb now out.

I don't think losing Pace was the only reason for the horrible performance by the Rams O. If you watched the game, Bulger was getting hit from both sides, and many of the drives were stalled due to the Rams receivers dropping passes. I'm not sure why the Rams didn't run the ball more, because they weren't behind by much through most of the game.

Injuries can kill you, but, in the short term, what really hurts are first quarter injuries.

Losing a Portis in the first quarter or a Coltston or McNabb this week early, gives you a goose egg at that position.

A guy listed as out gives you the chance to put in a decent sub and salvage something from the position.

The internet has made evn the borderline fantasy guy somewhat knowledgable. Standings and game scores seem to be closer than ever these days. Getting zero points from a position greatly reduces your chance of winning that particular week. And one loss is huge in head to head leagues.
