How to deter barking dogs? (1 Viewer)

Nearly every day I encounter the same barking dogs.  These properties are small with fences right up against the sidewalk and the dogs will be inches away from my ear as I pass.  I want to discourage them from barking without doing anything illegal or hurting them.  I thought about throwing water in their face but I doubt that is legal.  A foghorn would likely exceed the city's decibel level.  Though I suspect the dog barking also exceeds the decibel level.

Has anyone successfully neutralized barking dogs?  I have the same long walk every day and there is no alternative route that would allow me to avoid the main offenders.  Crossing the street would be a hassle because it's a busy highway and I would have to cross back over later.  Maybe this is karma because my childhood dog was a barker.  But I think he only barked at other dogs or delivery people and there is more space and open air in the suburbs.  The owners of barking dogs in cities should be executed.

Stand there with your back to them until they stop.  Once they stop give them a biscuit.  If they are smart they will remember you next time.  If they are dumb you might have to do it a couple of times.

How short are you?
I'm very tall. Some of the annoying little dogs are on elevated yards.  And there is another house with big German Shepards and they jump up on the fence.  I especially hate when these dogs launch sneak attacks and catch me by surprise.  So today I was on guard as I approached.  I watched as a couple passed the house before me with no sign of the dogs.  "Good," I thought.  Then as I hit the property line, I see the dog with a drooling smile galloping over to the fence.  I don't know if I made a mistake in the past by making eye contact or something but it feels personal now.

A snoutful of pepper spray may alter their world view.
This seems more harmful and illegal than a water spray.  I googled and all of the water spray answers seem to be geared towards owners.  Some sources say it works, others say it only trains the dog to not bark when you or the water bottle are around.  But that is exactly what I am after.  I just don't want them targeting me with their barking anymore.

I could try this approach.  Some owners might get upset if they see me giving something to their dogs, though.

My old neighbors had annoying dogs that would rush to the fence and just bark. So annoying. I got a water spray bottle and put it by the fence. I started by spraying them in the face and they stopped and backed away.   Then after a few times anytime they saw me walking towards that spray bottle they’d stop.  At a certain point all I had to do was the gun spraying hand motion and they’d stop

long story short, carry a water bottle sprayer with you on your walk and squirt them every time you go by and they bark.

barrier frustration

they're barking because they want to come check you out, but they can't.  i like the suggestion to stop and wait until they're done barking & then pay attention to them. give them positive reinforcement for not barking.

failing that, we have a sort of taser like noisemaker whereby you press a button and it crackles like a jolt of electricity. that snaps our dog to attention. it's just noise but it seems to break her fixation.

why not just keep walking and not let it bug you....dogs just being dogs....its what they do.....maybe headphones with nice calm music playing as you walk by...

Yep.  ignorant owners with untrained and uncared for dogs.  It really shouldn't be allowed.
I despise my neighbors. They put their two dogs outside for hours and they just scratch on the glass barking. Not sure which noise bothers me more. I can hear it in my house no problem.

Remarkably the wooden fence around their property doesnt block the sound.

I went over there to talk to them about it and big surprise, they didnt answer the door.

fenced in dogs notice people/other dogs when they walk by and go check it out and bark....part territorial, part curiosity, etc.....its just what they do, it's not a surprise....TBH I am actually surprised if I see a dog in a yard that doesn't do this when I walk by....

I get the whole outside unattended dog that just barks constantly all day long at nothing or whatever when owners aren't home and even are home....(to me that is a different story than a dog reacting to you coming close to their "territory" for all of 5 seconds)....so I can see being upset with those owners....that bugs me too....we have one in our neighborhood and apparently the owners both work a "swing" shift or something where they are gone from like 3pm to 11pm....prime time for Ref and Ms Ref to want to sit on our deck and enjoy the outdoors....this dog has access in and out of the garage through a dog door....needless to say, it spends most of the time outside barking at literally nothing....we are working on solving this issue with them...

if the owner is around when you walk by...the owner can holler at the dogs and maybe get them to stop....(at that point you are probably already past anyway)...but if the owner is in the house or gone, thats not gonna happen....just get over it....the dog isn't doing anything wrong, it's a natural reaction and the owners aren't POS owners either as some have mentioned...there really isn't a "problem"...you are just making it one or thinking that it is....I suggest taking a step back and wondering with all the other things to worry about in this world....is a dog barking at you for 10 seconds of your day as you walk by really that big of a deal.....?....it's your issue....not the dog or the dog owners....and IMO you have ZERO business taking any type of action suggested....no treats, no water bottles etc....if I saw you spraying my dog and trying to discipline/train it in any way....I'd shove the water bottle straight up your a$$ pipe...lol...relax

Plot twist - we have dogs in the neighborhood that are in the house and bark when we walk by!@#!@#    Horribly trained obviously ;)

We leave our dog outside 1-2 days a week from 8:30-4 ish..... why? shes a 12 year old rescue that has high anxiety.....  she hass actually injured herself in the house with no one home.  Outside is actually the more humane safer option - training with her has been super slow and difficult (calming drugs/treats, cbd don't work even a little) - so its been super tough getting her comfortable alone.    She freaks out with any closed door or enclosed pen - even with me there.....   Shes afraid of her dog house that doesn't even have a door

We have a 13 week old lab pup who wants to bite. He seems to understand the difference, but there are times (when he is hungry or my wife or kids get home) where he bites hard and even "snaps". We all think he is just excited and doesn't know how to mange it yet. But we also don't want it to fester. He's getting big fast and I don't want him actually hurting somebody.

We have tried to walk away. I have even gently closed his mouth along with a stern "no bite". Sometimes both methods work. Sometimes they don't.

Very frustrating.

High pitched yip when he does it if its a play bite that's just too hard.

Hi, I'm Caveman33 from up the street.  I walk by your place every day and your dogs get really excited and bark at me.  I was hoping to make friends with them so they don't get so excited.  Would you mind if I gave them a treat when I walk past?

If some one catches you spraying anything on their dogs be prepared for an ### kicking.

Because some dogs have allergies and even if they don't who knows what you're giving them - you shouldn't feed other people's dogs without permission.

Take him to daycare and it will stop immediately.  He will bite other dogs too hard and they will correct him and he will stop.  Speaking from experience here.

To add: Mine was taken away from her mother and siblings way too early and never got socialize properly.  After her daycare visit it was never a problem again.
