Nearly every day I encounter the same barking dogs. These properties are small with fences right up against the sidewalk and the dogs will be inches away from my ear as I pass. I want to discourage them from barking without doing anything illegal or hurting them. I thought about throwing water in their face but I doubt that is legal. A foghorn would likely exceed the city's decibel level. Though I suspect the dog barking also exceeds the decibel level.
Has anyone successfully neutralized barking dogs? I have the same long walk every day and there is no alternative route that would allow me to avoid the main offenders. Crossing the street would be a hassle because it's a busy highway and I would have to cross back over later. Maybe this is karma because my childhood dog was a barker. But I think he only barked at other dogs or delivery people and there is more space and open air in the suburbs. The owners of barking dogs in cities should be executed.
