Hard to imagine anyone willing to give up what it would take to get Peyton Manning considering the haul the Bengals got for Carson Palmer. What would it take?

I guess if the Colts were reasonable and really wanted to deal him the 49ers seem like a logical choice. Nobody really thinks the 49ers will be winning a championship with Alex Smith.
The 49ers remind me of the 2000 Baltimore Ravens. All they need from Alex Smith is a Trent Dilfer like performance in the playoffs.
Fair enough, but the Ravens didn't have to face two offenses the caliber of the Packers and Saints. The 49ers are going to have to put up points to beat those teams. I don't care how statistically good their defense is.
SF is the 10th best offense in the league this year. They're not the Saints/Packers but who is? They're averaging more than the Steelers, Bengals, Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, Giants, Chargers...This offense clearly is not the strength of their team and it won't win any shootouts. But with their defense they're not trying to win any shootouts. Just like the Packers/Saints don't try to grind out low scoring wins. It's different styles. Which style will win out remains to be seen. Vegas would rightfully favor Green Bay. But Vegas favored the 16-0 Patriots as well.
68 points in 4 games against winning teams (Balt Cincy Dallas Det) = 17 ppg. 220 points in 8 games against losing teams = 27.5 ppg

....

I am guessing this analysis would look similar for every team.

There's no reason to deal for Manning. What would they have to give up? One or multiple first rounders? When Harbaugh specifically traded up on the second to get kaepernick? when manning might only be around a few more years, and not even at 100%?

nope
Moving up to take Kaepernick would have nothing to do with their decision on Manning should it arise. That's like declining steak just because I have a bologna sandwich on my plate already.
No it is not. It is like declining leftover steak for the unknown foil-wrapped surprise. Could be jonnys bologna or prime rib.

The Chiefs gave up a 1st for Montana and 3rd. Manning could be traded if he was willing to rework his contract. I personally don't see the Colts paying the $28M option bonus without reworking the contract anyway so that will need to be done for him to stay a Colt anyway.

Talk in SF is that Niners are looking to sign Smith to a two year extension. There is absolutely nothing to indicate that niners are even remotely interested in Peyton. As to Smith's quality as a QB, as well as showing how good coaching can make a difference, the niners success this year really highlights the utter failings of both Nolan and Singletary, particularly Singletary, as a head coach, especially in matters relating to Smith. Honestly, I think you can wipe the slate clean of everything that happened prior to Harbaugh's arrival. Nolan and Sing were awful head coaches and both weilded significantly negative impacts on Smith. And Peyton could find himself a FA next year. He's due a $28mil roster bonus in 2012, which, if I understand correctly, he would not be paid if he's released. Talk is that Peyton may extend terms of the roster bonus in order for Indy to try and work a trade, but hard to see another team taking on that kind of liability for an aging QB off a season ending injury no matter the cost. If the news on Peyton isn't good come February of this year, he's either going to be a FA, traded, or need to seriously restructure his deal. I can easily envision an environment where he is a FA.
Alex Smith is finally playing like the guy many of us thought he could be, which is very Aikman-ish.
