I like the OS update. It does seem quite snappier. The browser works much better too, but do not like that the removed the private browsing feature.

I like WebOS as an operating system but their app store is completely dead.. anybody have any luck converting to Android?

so I installed android on it mainly because although I actually love WebOS the fact that the app store was so limited forced my hand

Really love the Droid so far. Best $99 I have spent in a long while

I.still have WebOS installed and may go back and forth between the two operating systems

I just decided to go ahead and put android on mine yesterday. Thrilled with the alpha 3 so far. Besides all the extra apps available, it just seems much more usable for what I need it to do. Much easier to access files I want to (which makes me happier that I ended up with the 32 gb one). There were definitely nice things about webos, but overall, this seems much better for me. So far, at least.

I thought the android os would support the sd card slot so you could add storage? Anyone used this? I am still waiting for iCs to move.

Not sure I understand it correctly, but I thought android install just treats the webos/media partition as an SD card, but there's no actual SD card slot. Is that not the case?

Yeah. I'm a moron. It's been awhile since i checked progress on this. I thought. I remembered there being a disabled sd slot but it's actually a sim card holder. :bag:

I'm sure it depends on how you want to use your machine right now. The better web browser, the much better handling of pdf files (especially downloading them from sites like blackboard), and the better file manager giving me easy access to files I save on the machine all have made it more than worthwhile for me.I'm not sure exactly what the advantage is to waiting for ICS... what are your thoughts on that, culdeus? As far as the time involved, it wasn't bad at all. Probably wouldn't have taken any longer than half an hour had some of the steps been a little more clear in the list I was following. For example, you have novacomm installed on your computer and you download acmeinstaller. They didn't tell me that you should put the acmeinstaller file in the same directory as novacomm (which for me on XP was in c:\program files\palm, inc), otherwise the command line prompt you put in later doesn't do anything. So it took me just a little longer to figure out things like that. There were a couple parts where it looked like it stopped working, but you just have to be patient and let it do its thing.

I don't know anything about android really. ICS was supposed to be their tablet OS by design and the other ones are really just phone OS ported, correct?

Thoughts on best approach? I was thinking about just hammering "refresh" on this string starting around 5:30 (for 5 mins), 5:45 (for 5 mins), then 5:55 (All times CT):http://stores.ebay.com/hewlettpackard/Home.html__W0QQ_sidZ1064151579?_nkw=Touchpad

I imagine that should show TOuchpads in their store as soon as they're listed, no?

I've seldom been successful at obtaining things in this manner. I'll yield to the pros (and give you a bump).

Not at firesale prices, but Tiger Direct has them currently for $250 with a bluetooth speaker and case.

web os update 3.0.4 released today. There is an android dual boot that also seems stable. I am going to wait for ICS.
Here you go (I've been waiting also. Waiting for this tweet.)ETA: Oh, and 3.0.5 was end of last week. You may need to remove preware patches to get it to load. And check before reloading the patches as HP moved some of the applications to new locations.

This is a

Went pretty easily. I seem to have had the wifi issue everyone had overnight, but changing the channel to "6" on the router seems to have fixed that. Haven't tried much yet, but seems good to go. Just wish I remembered to install getjar before buying a few things that could have been free.

And now this news might mean we have some working drivers soon.

Then again

Erik Hardesty @dalingrin

Kernel source from HP would have been more helpful earlier in development. Don't expect huge gains from this source.

Hindsight being what it is I wonder why they didn't release with Android? There are also rumors that they did nearly all their early dev work using Windows OS and then migrated to Android for awhile.

They started doing nightly builds in the past week or two, but never got to load one of those since Alpha 1 came out on Monday. I installed it last night.

Today Alpha2.

Both mostly concerned video

Alpha 2 Release notes:

This is for video playback fixes only, no other changes.

Fix netflix and other apps that rely on http live streaming

Fix blocky video due to bad scaling

Alpha 1 Release notes:

We finally have hardware video decode working largely thanks to some help from yjwong. This release is primarily just to get hardware decoding out for folks to enjoy while other work continues. This build does not work with Netflix yet. However, hardware accelerated video decoding does work for Youtube HD and playback of local media. This build still uses the 2.6.35 kernel. The 3.0 kernel is still being heavily worked on and is also the primary focus for development. Don't expect hardware video decoding to be perfect yet. Its half a miracle it works at all on our current kernel.

Similar to the last build I will provide flashable zips to make it easier to switch to lcd density 120 with proper launcher layout. The hardware video decoding will not make it into the nightlies for a few days. There is still some work to do in order to get it merged into repositories and ensure it doesn't break other devices.

Hardware video decoding support. As a result, Youtube HD and 720p and 1080p local media will now be playable. Netflix does not work yet.

Includes touchscreen improvements by Dees_Troy

Now able to enable use of 2D companion core to offload composition

Keep udating us. I'll likely jump to this when it is full and stable. If only for the netflix capability.

Once I changed my router's channel, I've had no issues. Sometimes the "touch" is less than responsive. The camera doesn't work. They claim audio is bad, but I have had no problems. I don't have Netflix so hopefully jon or culdus will report on that. I'll probably give "crackle" a try when I get a chance to see if that works (I don't think it did). Still haven't had a chance to try HD YouTube either. The item I am waiting for are updates without having to use the recovery program. At that point I'll load this on those I purchased as gifts. (Well, when I am near those since one is 900 miles away and the other 1400.)

It isn't clear to me if Netflix is supposed to work yet. I haven't tried thinking it wasnt' ready. This latest update change list seems vauge.
