Humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan (1 Viewer)

If the people of Afghanistan really want to be free they need to stand up and fight for it.

I agreed with Trump when he started the withdrawal and made the deal to leave, and I agreed with Biden to continue that plan and do it.  Yes, it went horrible.  But it needed to be done and the US Military should not go back.  Let the humanitarian groups handle this.
Humanitarian  groups should not go in.   Unless they are the right kind of Muslims.   Cuz they will be a head shorter.

Afghans in the U.S shielded from deportation

The Biden administration will provide immigration relief to tens of thousands of Afghans in the U.S., shielding them from deportation due to the deteriorating security and economic conditions in Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover last year, the Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday.

After determining that Afghanistan is too dangerous to send deportees there, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas allowed Afghans in the U.S. to apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which would protect them from deportation and allow them to work legally for 18 months.

The move, which was first reported by CBS News earlier Wednesday, is particularly significant for more than 76,000 Afghans who were evacuated and resettled by the U.S. after the chaotic American military withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021.

Should the Biden administration knew the country would collapse if we left?

Biden only has 50 years of working Fed Govt and knowing what happens with countries/economies/situations ...... he absolutely knew

Not that I mind us pulling out of Afghanistan - but those countries are like that, they always will be ..... but yes, Biden and the leaders in this Govt knew (Democrats and Republican's both)

Thanks Biden!

Thanks Biden!

I don't know anyone who didn't want us out of Afghanistan - that was a checkmark in Biden's Done Good Things column .... then, he had to bungle is horribly so it would have an asterisk by the entry noting American's dead and military equipment left behind etc :(

Imagine how he could crow about it if he hadn't bungled it so badly ?

Thank you for acknowledging he was in charge when the hard part was done. Complete removal of our forces in a nation taken over by the Taliban. Many mistakes were made but we are now out.

Politicians definitely like to talk about their accomplishments.

I'll give him the credit for doing all that happens while he sits as POTUS yessir  - credit for the good, credit for the bad as well

This is certainly fair.   I have never been a Trump fan but I supported his plan to withdraw from Afghanistan.   Like everyone else I was disappointed by the way Biden handled it but overall I am glad we are out and I hope we never go back in.

Hard? His handlers decided that they wanted the troops out of Afghanistan, trotted him out there for 5 minutes and then he went back to drinking his Metamucil and eating his oatmeal.

They weren't even worried about all the people they left behind because they know they have people like you that will swoop to their defense regardless and be the cheerleaders despite the boondoggle.

I mean, come on man. Hard? Give me a break.

Yes removing the final soldiers was the hard part, anyone can say let’s do it. I’m sure you, Bladerunner of FBG’s, would have had the perfect plan.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

When you keep using it as a cheerleader for TEAM BLUE it loses all meaning.

Getting out of Afghanistan.left much to be desired. It was described at length in that thread. We are out now and completely removing ourselves was the hard part. You can’t acknowledge this because of your bias, it’s ok.

Disturbing first-hand account of how we left Afghanistan...

Thank you to true heroes like Kennedy, who did their best to clean the mess created by this abysmal administration. Every time I find myself losing faith in our society and humanity, I'm lifted up by dudes like this. This is what a real American hero looks like. I cannot imagine the nightmares this dude must regularly have.

At the least I can agree the strategy of removing ourselves was good.  The tactics to get there were a national embarrassment.

I listened to a bit of this. Very captivating, tragic, etc.

The speed that the country fell apart was amazing. Much of what he described is attributed to this and that this country wasn't functional despite our intentions and tremendous resources provided. These scumbags outlasted twenty years of war against a superpower living in caves and villages 50 years behind western civilization. They are hardened, insane people.

We can't fix these problems. So we either stay indefinitely or we get out.

Or C...

We could have gotten out much more strategically. We still have tens of thousands of troops in Germany, Japan and South Korea and for good reason. We could have extracted the vast majority but left behind a functional core force to man and maintain key bases and provide intelligence and logistical support to the Afghan military. Ripping off the band-aid the way Biden did was beyond stupid, especially since it went against our OWN long-term strategic interests, even forgetting about the broken promises to our Afghan allies.

There is zero justifying the manner in which we pulled out of Afghanistan. We took two decades and trillions of dollars in attempted goodwill to the region and flushed it all down the toilet in the name of unnecessary expedience. So dumb. And so obvious, not just in hindsight.

We leave people in there forever like Japan, Germany, SK I don't think is comparable. If we leave Ramstein Airbase I don't think Berlin falls to a Taliban style government in a couple months. No clue if the small number of forces we had would have been sufficient forever.

In any case beyond tragic situation and a reminder to how lucky we all are here.
