HVAC Brand Recommendations (1 Viewer)

I need to replace my upstairs 2.5 ton split system heat pump/ac and air handler. Local AC company is offering Amana, Tempstar, and Lennox options.  I've also asked for a RUUD quote since that's what we have downstairs and it has worked well.

Amana is the least expensive so far but they may be able to bring the Lennox down to the same price.

Any thoughts on good/bad brands for these products?

We have an HVAC tech that works for us and he always recommends the more affordable options like Goodman or American Standard saying regardless which brand it’s a crapshoot. Some die a couple years later others go 15. We just priced a commercial RUUD unit as we saw their warranty was double the competition with 10 years. Check into that, if same for residential I would go that route. Good luck!

Just got a American standard system with a 10 year warranty.  Their breakage rate is outstanding.  I'm happy

The original unit builder models in our home were Goodman's replace shortly after we bought and they were only like 10 years old. Went with Bryant.

Get the Lennox.

They may cost a little upfront but they are one of the most reliable. Tempstar’s are hard to get parts for. When I have to order parts for them its about a 50/50 shot it is in stock.

Amana is ok - parts are readily available, but they are basically a jazzed up Goodman. Which just got bought out by Daikin.

I would go Lennox all day long out of those three.

I had a Mitsubishi split system heat pump in my last house and it was great. Go with the name brand. Like anything, don’t be afraid to pay more for quality. Lowest price is rarely the way to go unless comparing apples to apples or on a commodity.

You know how everyone says "they don't build them like they used to 50 years ago, blah, blah, blah"?  My house was built in 1992, I have the original Bryant furnace.  I replaced the AC with a Goodman unit 11 years ago, I just had it serviced today (needed freon and the coils cleaned.)  I will most definitely go with a Bryant again, hopefully they're still made as good as they were 26 years ago.

Are we talking about AC is is this the leaked script for GOTG 3?

Replaced my Lennox with another Lennox.  No variable speed #### and I keep the house at 78.  I expect this one to last 10 years like the last one.  It’s been solid so far.

Deferring to @ChiefD, but my fussy FIL and BIL always went with Trane, and so I did too several years ago.  Price seemed very good, and I've been happy with it.  I believe my prior unit was a Lennox.

@ChiefD what would recommend for a new HVAC system?  I have undersized units for the down and upstairs.  Always needing new fan motors, capacitors, starter switch?

I live in the Tulsa area

Bookmarked so I could post my story this morniing...had to have unit recharged last year and was running fine in early heat this year. However, with the first upper 90s in NJ yesterday, back to original issue (cooling, but cannot drop below 76-77). Guessing at this point replacement is the likely path, so welcome suggestions. Townhouse (1660 sq. ft) and folks I have been using for maintenance are in top 100 Lennox dealers in country according to their website (I am in Middletown, NJ). Lennox appears to be offering up to $1500 savings on a new system, so guess I will find out about that.

Sorry to pile on @ChiefD

My house was built in 96, still running the original Bard Geothermal.  Just had to have the freon charged this year...  Probably going to have to replace the unit sometime in the near future.. not looking forward to that.

I would go with one of the big three, probably in this order:

Lennox

Carrier

Trane

Lennox is good equipment. What city are you in? I know a good company out of Caldwell if that's close to you.

What is your opinion of Heil?  I replaced my furnace/AC two summers ago and no issues to speak of.  Also have a Heil at my hunting cabin and it's performed well.

They are fine. Just keep your filters clean and the outdoor unit washed out once a year.

My main motivation for recommending a larger brand is just parts availability more than anything. When it's the heat of summer or dead of winter your odds of being able to find parts is greater should something break down. That's just my experience having to buy parts all day.

Previous home had two Tranes that lasted from 1992 - 2012. Current home is Carrier and we have had a few warranty calls in 3 out of 5 years. Techs always seem to suggest American Standard.

Can't tell you what kind to get Ron, but DON'T get a York. Nothing but problems the last couple of years since we got it.
