I can hire an illegal immigrant to clean my house? (1 Viewer)

IIRC it's all good under like $500/yr. Only if you're running for Congress does it matter if you pay more than that... if you end up paying so much you have to pay into their Soc Security.
$600 is the minimum reporting amount on contractors.

Illegals are the best to hire for one time jobs because you can stiff them on pay and threaten to call ICE if they do anything about it.

She will get more than $600 for the year. Can't she pay her own soc. security taxes when she files?

I've used them for landscaping projects. They're cheap but work ethic is hit or miss. Overall it's usually a good value and odds are low that you'll get in trouble.

You're getting work done for cheap PLUS you're doing a good deed.
Breaking the law is a good deed?
in this case? Absolutely.
So the government loses out on tax dollars here, other tax payers pick up the slack, and this is a good deed?

ETA: let me guess, you're probably against US corporations that legally use smart tax planning too right?
1. Yes. Actually we recoup the lost money in consumer spending power. And the illegals make better use of their money earned than the tax man does. 2. Hardly. For simplicity sake I would remove most of these loopholes but slash the corporate tax rate.

You seem to assume my defense of illegals is a liberal one. That's a small element- the larger one is capitalism.

Here's to hoping it's the cleaning lady from the mayhem commercials that trips on your lose rug and falls down the stairs. Injury attorneys love to exploit illegals, GL.

Is it a good deed to hire women who have been trafficked here for sex? Is that legal if you keep it under $600? TIA

No kidding, exploiting the poor and desperate. Awesome good deed.
Sorry but I'm not a liberal. I believe that the marketplace should establish wages and not the government. If you pay someone an amount they're willing to work for, that's not exploitation, that's capitalism. One of the many reasons I like illegal immigration is that it undercuts minimum wage and brings us closer to a free marketplace. This is why all classic libertarian minded economists, like Milton Freidman and Ludwig Von Mises, supported open borders.

So you're in favor of abolishing min. wage laws? What about overtime laws? Shouldn't the free market decide how many hours a week a person should work, and at what wage?

Sure.

But, Strike, it doesn't really matter whether I'm in favor of eliminating minimum wage or not. Minimum wage is here to stay. So is illegal immigration. Both are fixtures in our economy.
