I hope you're not an Utley owner (1 Viewer)

Utley to get 'additional opinions' on knee The Phillies announced Wednesday that they will seek "additional opinions" on Chase Utley's ailing right knee.

Utley has underwent multiple MRIs on the knee, which have revealed prior tendinitis, chondromalacia, and bone inflammation. The knee hasn't responded to a recent cortisone shot, but the Phillies will continue to opt for non-operative treatment for now. Surgery is a last resort here, but it can't be ruled out, either. That sound you hear is Utley dropping on draft boards.

Philly radio is saying that the Phils should push the guy for surgery. Even if he misses time....he should be available some time this year. At this point though, what draft pick is a value pick for Utley?

Zolecki was just on WIP. Phils have no room to expand payroll, as they're right up against the luxury tax threshold. They also want to see how the lineup does offensively before they do anything as drastic as trading Blanton. The Utley thing caught the Phillies by surprise, because Utley normally has some tendinitis in the spring, and it goes away quickly. They thought they were dealing with the same thing this year.

Polanco could always shift to 2B giving them some flexibility if the right trade offer came along.

Given the uncertainty, that's impossible to say. Without knowing what the problem is and what the timetable is, it's all a gamble. At this point, every option is in play. He could be the top 2B in baseball or he could miss the season, or anything in between. At this point, if I had to decide, there's no way I'd draft him in the top 7 2B and 2B is so deep, I might wait until about 15.

A friend just told me that they "kicked the tires" on Michael Young. I wonder if they will make another call on him.

It depends a lot on the league format. In shallow leagues or ones without a MI slot, stashing Utley on the bench could be a viable strategy. There were similar concerns about him two years ago following hip surgery and he ended up playing 156 games. The worst case, especially for leagues with weekly lineups, is that he'll sit down a couple of days per week to rest his wheels. There's a longer term concern for the Phillies if Utley can't regain mobility to play the position. They already have a logjam at 1B with Howard, his contract and Singleton. I suppose Utley in the OF would be a possibility but that's an unknown.

You know it's bad when a physical therapist is likening Utley's knee to a "worn tire."

It seems like there are several issues converging here: patellar tendon inflammation and worn cartilage. As she points out, treatment is tricky since no one option will fix the underlying problems.

This really doesn't sound good. I'm guessing Utley will have to have surgery thus ending his season, but you know this dude is looking for that one doctor who will advise him to inject something in there and give it a go.

Whether he has surgery, or guts it out, this has to be his last season as a 2B. 1B is all sorts of blocked. Probably doesnt have the arm for RF. LF maybe?

Mitchy-poo speculating the Phils will pick up Pete Happy if he gets cut by the Royals. :X
