I need saves (1 Viewer)

Going into this year I had 3 closers in a deep 20 person keeper league where you keep your entire roster. They've all done crap for me this year, Cordero got hurt and Myers, and Dempster moved back into the rotation (though having Demps as a SP is pretty nice too). Out of the 20 teams I'm tied for 18th in saves, and see this as my only really weak category. I'm in the mix to win this year, and I'm exploring a couple trades, but I think I can gain a couple points and help myself a bit with just vulturing a couple saves here and there. Closers, set-up men and all the future closing prospects I know of are on teams already. Any help would be appreciated.

Here's the top candidates off the waiver wire.

Jim Johnson - Is Sherrill getting traded any time soon? Who'll take over you think?

Brian Shouse - looks decent. Mil bullpen still a mess?

Dotel - Jenks is have arm troubles, who's next in line?

Guardado - might get a couple? arm troubles?

Other names available...

Dolsi

Lowe

Carlson

Boyer

any of these guys might get me a couple?

Anybody I should be looking at for the future would be helpful but not necessary.

Linebrink is Jenks' backup, not Dotel.

Everything I've read indicates Johnson is Sherril's backup (beware of Chris Ray in September though), but I haven't read any rumors about Sherril being dealt in a while, Baltimore probably needs to go on a slide pretty soon.

As long as Guardado is healthy he is CJ Wilson's backup, but that's a dicey proposition.

Backups to the backups is what I'm looking at probably.Guardado and Johnson are my leading candidates at this point in time.

Is Grant Balfour available in your league?
Nope. Only person w/ more than 2 saves available is Acosta, and he's on the DL.
If Chris Perez is available, he'd be a great keeper candidate. Might be closing for the Cards as early as next year. Of course, he's probably gone too.
Yep.Deep sleepers are welcome though.
He's pretty deep, lol.I'm having trouble thinking of anyone worth rostering that is a candidate for saves.

Welcome to life in deep leagues. I've been real lucky this year in my 16 teamer, drafted Percival and Wood (several weeks before he was declared the closer) after pick 250, picked up Franklin a couple of blown saves before Izzy lost the job, added Gonzalez in early May and stuffed him on the DL. I missed the boat on Linebrink by a day (was using the roster spot planned for him on a streaming pitcher), Morrow by less than an hour, had Wheeler but dealt him for Bourn literally two days before Percival's first DL stint, and Chris Perez didn't even clear waivers - Balfour was gone within minutes of Wheeler's second hamstring pull. Guardado has been in and out of my lineup throughout the year as I have space, hoping CJ Wilson implodes while Guardado's on my roster. Josh Johnson is the lone potential closer remaining on my watch list outside of Guardado, I comb through waivers once/week while at work (normally Thursday) to see if anything new has popped up along with following the normal daily activity and came up empty last week. Currently sitting 2nd in saves does lower this on the priority list though.

Hinshaw - SF

Hanrahan - WAS

Boyer - ATL

Grabow - PIT

Joe Smith - NYM

Romulo Sanchez - PIT

Corey Wade - LA

Stetter - MIL

all owned in <2% of leagues at Sportsline

Brian Shouse - looks decent. Mil bullpen still a mess?
:shrug:Shouse is probably not a good option for you. I think hes 3-0 with 2 saves this year. He's pretty much strictly an 8th inning vs lefties guy. He's got like 10 or 11 holds but only like 19 strikeouts. His resume this year is a lot of one and dones against lefties. I would pass on any Brewer relief pitchers fantasy-wise.Then again, as I said in the Brewer thread, I don't even play fantasy baseball so take that FWIW

Dotel and Linebrink will probably split closing duties with Jenks out. I'd grab either one if available.
what about Matt Thornton?
Well, I think the pecking order is Linebrink, Dotel, and then Thornton. If you have a deep roster or if saves are hard to come by, then yeah, I'd pick him up. Wouldn't be surprised to see him end up in the role, really. He's having a great season.

Or, as Finless would say:

If Thornton is available on your waiver wire and you're desparate for saves and Dotel and Linebrink are gone, you should really pick him up.

I think Dotel will be closer for near future with Jenks out after last night's performance. Is Taylor BUcholz available? I know many people think Corpas will be the guy when Fuentes gets moved, but I think BUcholz may be in line next.

Yeah, Dotel should be the guy moving forward especially after last night.

Ha, ah ####... he's gone too. I wasn't lying when I said this would be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

isn't Jenks due back right after the ASB?

His injury is a tricky one, if there are no setbacks he'll be back after the break, but these things have a tendency to linger. You never know...

If you're a true gambler, I've been tracking a guy named Rey Pinto in the Marlins pen. The chatter has been all about Matt Lindstrom, but everytime he's been put in a tight situation, he hasn't looked good.

A little better known, but maybe unclaimed guy in your league is Ramon Ramirez with KC.

Been following the Florida situation too, Pinto's likely the #2 in waiting. Lindstrom has better stuff but doesn't seem to be able to mentally handle the tough situations just yet.

Nice tip, thanks. I picked up Lindstrom as soon as I saw he was available a couple days ago. Pinto's already taken, but Ramirez is available.

I read that Manny Corpas will get another chance to close in the event that Brian Fuentes gets traded.....which he probably will. Corpas has had an unbelivably rough year at closer so far this year, but i have a gut feeling that if given the chance he will seize the oppurtunity.

He's starting to come around. I also like a minor league guy they've got named Casey Weathers. He'll be playing in the futures game if you want to check him out.

Pinto walks 5.8 per nine innings and has a 1.4 K/BB ratio. Those are not skills indicative of a closer. That entire pen is a disaster waiting to happen but if you made me take one person from the Marlins, give me Joe Nelson.
