I Wonder Who "WE" Is (1 Viewer)

Not a fan of Obama's but the guy running the Executive Branch seeking to expand his powers isn't something he just came up with.

The previous administration was interested in expanding the power of the President as much as possible.

I'll take this opportunity to add that I despise when people use the term "we" when they're really talking about the US Government (USG).

If a pronoun must be used when referring to the USG, it should be "they."

Because "they" are all about enriching "themselves" and "their" friends and cronies, not about protecting "us" and "our" liberties.

But if "we" can only vote in "our" guy, everything will be so much better!

Obama has gotten the ACA, amnesty also, apparently. But controlling the internet is taking it too far(read as I don't want it to be slower or more expensive or censored)...what's next, taxing people based on the amount of oxygen intake?

I am not a fan of the ACA, but it was passed by Congress.

As for the immigration reforms, I actually agree with many of them, but I also agree that some of them are beyond the purview of Executive powers. And guess what, they are being reviewed by the courts, as they should be.

The FCC and Net neutrality is a complicated issue. But I think it is arguable that the FCC has a legal right to assert regulatory powers over internet services. And it will be argued in court when the new rules are challenged by Comcast, Verizon, et al.

In short, I don't think you know what you are talking about. Again.

I'm taxed on the amount of rain that falls on my property in the great state of Maryland.

Nice of you to conform to whatever the govt. does, like a good little sheep.

Yeah, Obama. We want the internet to be faster, cheaper and uncensored! So stop controlling the internet by taking measures to protect it from deliberate slowdowns, price-gouging and censorship by ISPs!

Absolutely. The conversations on net neutrality are perverse. They are accusing Obama of taking the exact actions he is actually preventing corporations from taking. If there is a better example of unbridled Obama derangement syndrome I can't think of it.

You're pulling for the wrong team if you want a fast free less expensive internet Jim.

Your complaint was about Obama. Then you cited things Congress did.

I am a small government guy, but I also understand the difference between legislation and executive orders.

If you want to complain about too much government intrusion into our lives, I will probably agree with you. But if you cast it as a Democratic vs. Republican thing, you are an idiot, since both parties are probably equally guilty of support for government intrusion in our lives (just in different areas).

I like the internet the way it now is. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Yeah, start with Nixon... and progressively expand it with every administration, and then there's your and our problem.

Could probably go back to FDR, but yeah.

This FCC decision won't impact things for some time...maybe never, but more govt. control is generally not a good thing, IMO.

:lmao:

I wish we could overturn the FCC decision, but only for Jim11. That way we won't have to bother reading this kind of complete nonsense here because it would take him an hour for to load FBG since they're not ponying up the kind of cash that ESPN is to get into the fast lane for sports talk.

Tell me, what are your thoughts on the government controlling who has the right to marry?

Sad....

I do not like executive orders. So, I agree there. As for the Net Neutrality, blame the Republicans. They were in power when the groundwork for what is now the FCC was laid.

I blame the GOP as well. They have the power in Congress now, yet are capitulating to Obama on amnesty. We'll soon see what they do on net neutrality, if anything.

Yes, you are. Jump in there with the ad hominem attack, but don't provide any of your own thoughts on the matter.

I will not arrange a return trip however.

Clark: Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?

Eddie: Naw, I'm doing just fine, Clark.

A Day in the Life of Jim11

Jim11 gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Jim11 gets it too.

He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Jim11's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

In the morning shower, Jim11 reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.

Jim11 dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air.

He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Jim11 begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Jim11's employer pays these standards because Jim11's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union.

If Jim11 is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

It is noontime and Jim11 needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Jim11's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Jim11's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.

Jim11 has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Jim11 and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Jim11 also forgets that in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university.

Jim11 is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the tax-payer funded roads.

He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans.

The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification.

He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Jim11 wouldn't have to.

Jim11 gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Jim11 enjoys throughout his day. Jim11 agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

That's pretty humorous. You convinced me...I'm voting for Hillary.

Jim11 may be dimwitted troglodyte, at best, but this love letter to big government and regulation is silly.

I will say this, there could be a bit of a ghost in the machine in the Constitution under the wrong circumstances.

Leave Obama out of it.

Let's say a president decided he would veto everything that mattered or of substance and instead used executive orders to fill the vacuum - that would mean that virtually anything would require a 2/3's vote to become law. That would create a very serious constitutional crisis.

The problem is that the Republicans can't seem to pass anything substantive even when they control both houses. Which raises another constitutional issue, which the Republicans helped create and which the Democrats are now starting to use themselves, and that is that a small number of Senators can prevent anything from getting passed, thus leaving the power up to the president.

Everything and the kitchen sink is in this thread - internet regulation! immigration! health care! - but We The People are developing a nasty little habit of not being able to govern ourselves.

Why would 66% create a constitutional crisis but 60% seems to be just fine to many?

Take your pick, fine. - Is that the filibuster rule you're speaking of? I agree if so, I think I was referring to that.

I think just one Senate majority Leader can prevent a bill from reaching a vote anyway.

So who wants to get rid of the fillibuster when their own party might want it next go-round? And EO's are the same way, why limit the president's power if your party might have the WH next time and might want that power too.

But we are leading us down into an alley of negative democracy, the Congress/parliament can't act, so the president is constantly in a position (maybe rightly) of being able to claim "crisis" Maybe this is why people hate Congress so much these days regardless of power, because people see what a bs passive-aggressive ruse this is.

But it's a problem, we just keep delivering more and more power to the executive branch, he's not even required to enforce laws anymore. He may or may not. He may enact his own laws .... or he may not. One day he says he has no authority then two years later... he says he does. Even if the president is shot down by the courts would that stop him? Treasury just doled out a $3 billion payment to the insurance companies (remember, the bad guys?) and the payment isn't authorized by the ACA or appropriated in any way. It's all like some kind of kabuki theatre.
