IDP noob - Looking for some basic strategy advise (1 Viewer)

Long time FF'er, but fresh meat in the IDP game. I took over a team in *what looks like* a very competitive Keeper format league. (keep 8, but everyone dumps the IDPs back into the pool). This is yr. #2, so a lot of the offensive talent is rostered - no rookies yet - and typical Round 3/4/5 (offense) guys are at the top of the draft board starting off.

Based on the scoring (below), what's the best basic IDP strategy to approach the draft? (i.e.)

1. What round(s) to start targeting players

*no idea here* considering we start 2 IDP'ers and must roster 3

2. Considering scoring - what position(s) generally score best (LB, DB, DL?)

Guessing LBs from glancing @ cheat sheets - but why? tackles are the $ stat??

3. Should I just take the FBG cheat sheet and run w/ it??

4. Any *other* IDP nuggets from you guys that have been doing this for a while?

Here's the scoring system I'm looking @:

Scoring for Defensive Categories

DFR - Defensive/ST Fumble Recovered (ID/DT/DST) 2 points

DFTD - Defensive TD 6 points

Int - Interceptions 3 points

SACK - Sack 2 points

STY - Safety 2 points

TK - Tackle (ID/DT/DST) 0.5 points

Replies sincerely appreciated and TIA!

Since you only start two and roster three you can wait til your offense is set with backups before taking an IDP or three. You should point that out during the season and lobby for more IDP starters.

Our rosters are 22 deep, including the "min" of 3 IDPs. I think we can carry more (vs. WR projects, or 4th string RBs).IMHO, this is a mild step up from dropping in a D/ST, but no where close to what IDP could be...So, maybe start looking for IDP in the 8th round (of the 14) considering we keep 8 from 05? This *draft guidance*, along w/ position vs. position advise is what I'm after here. I can manage it from there I guess - even w/o knowing a lot of the LBs/DBs in the league (name wise)

I'd also point out that your sacks are only 2 points per and int's 3. Depending on your offensive scoring, you may not get alot of balance with IDP's, but you' ll have fun with it.

So stick to what others have already said, don't start panicking when the studs go off the table. Based on my rough calculations, you'll only be 10-12 points behind if you take the 12th available LB, and ideally, when your gobbling up players like ????? (Gore, Glenn, Mike Bell, maybe Rhodes just a few I like here), you could gain alot more than the 10 or 12 points you let go by waiting on them. And if you are using the FFG rankings, hopefully there will be a couple great steals left on the board..

Of course, double check with your scoring. If your offense is TD only, that would change things, IMO..

Thanks for replying Darcimer.Basically we only start 2 IDPs (assuming carry 3/4 on a 22 man roster), so it's probably not a huge factor week to week (scoring wise). And since we all keep 8, I'm guessing the first 8-? rounds (re-draft / straight -not snake) will be spent stocking up backups and rounding out the O starters.I guess I'm looking for impressions about position preferences (i.e. why LBs are more valuable vs. DL, or advise to take SS vs. FS vs. CBs) considering my scoring system (mentioned in the first post). And when to start taking them off the board. Granted I can follow a run like everyone else ;) in the 7th round (or whenever), but wanted to see what the value plays are position and round wise. From the posts and links I'm diggin into now, it seems like there's going to be value later vs. sooner IF you know what and who (and when) to target.Again, my league looks like IDP "lite" and a throw in alternative to carrying a D/ST vs. the complexity of really fielding a full IDP squad (looks like it's MUCH more involved).

I think that you need to consider dabbling in to grab top position players when there are large drop-offs. I use to grab R Harrison around the 8th and R Lewis at his top use to go around the 6th in a 12-14 team 30 roster redraft league. Look for value after that- I got A Wilson LATE last year and now he is #1........ always look at the lousy teams D as well

Bump for science and results of the draft carnage.

This is IDP "lite" - we only start 2 players a week (any position). Scoring above.

8 player keeper league - and no one kept any IDP players.

Ok, so I print off the IDP "overall" cheat sheet before the draft. After looking through the links provided in this thread (thanks again guys for the help) I'm focused on "3 down" LBs due to the scoring and decide that I'd rather live w/ consistent tackle #s (and a few ints / sacks) vs. trying to guess what week Reed goes off.

Draft starts and Vilma goes first (end of 3rd)

Urlacher and Bulluck in the 4th

Peppers/Freeny/Osi in the 5th

Lofa/Reed/Merriman/Polamalu 6th

based on the IDP overall I grab Ray Lewis in the 7th

got Z Thomas in the 9th

and A Pierce in the 14th round

So here's my question...

Am I nuts??? Based on the IDP overall cheatsheet I ended up with the #4, #5, #10 overall IDP'ers and drafted them all (what seems to me) late. Basically there's around 36-40 IDP players drafted - but a lot of guys took players ranked MUCH lower (40/50+ overall).

No, you're not nuts.Getting those guys in those rounds, after keeping 8, is definitely solid. Pierce in the 14th = SOD.Sit back, relax, and watch the tackles roll in every Sunday. Deciding which guy to bench each week should be your biggest IDP headache all season.
