All the talk this morning on tv was whether Tom Coughlin would earn his place in the HOF with another SB win against the Pats on Sunday. I thought that was being very presumptuous (not the part about the Giants winning, the part about him making the HOF with a win).

Here's a list of all the coaches with multiple SB victories. HOF status is as of today, so obviously guys not in could still be voted it (and others are not even eligible yet).

Coach SB W L T WIN% HOFChuck Noll 4 193 148 1 0.566 YBill Belichick 3 175 97 0 0.643 NJoe Gibbs 3 154 64 0 0.621 YBill Walsh 3 92 59 1 0.609 YDon Shula 2 328 156 8 0.678 YTom Landry 2 250 162 6 0.607 YBill Parcells 2 172 130 1 0.570 NMike Shanahan 2 157 119 0 0.569 NTom Coughlin 2 142 114 0 0.555 NGeorge Seifert 2 114 62 0 0.648 NTom Flores 2 97 87 0 0.527 NVince Lombardi 2 94 36 6 0.738 YJimmy Johnson 2 80 64 0 0.556 N
Anyone else have an opinion as to whether it's win and he's in (Canton) for Coughlin?

Walsh and Gibbs are in. Parcells seems likely to go in this year or next.

I tend to think yes.

One coach left off the original list that is in the Hall of Fame is Marv Levy. Coughlin's metrics are very similar to Levy's. Levy had the run of consecutive Conference Championships that Coughlin didn't but Coughlin with a victory is a multiple Super Bowl winner.

Coughlin is among the coaching leaders with playoff wins.

I think Parcells will get in the Hall, even if it's not in his first year. I think Joe Gibbs will also get in. I'm a little shocked Bill Walsh isn't in yet.

Gibbs and Walsh are in. The PFR site doesn't list them as in, however.

Looks like my powers of prediction are already spot on then!

Not to threadjack but it would seem that a Coach needs to do more than simply win 2 Super Bowls. I don't think Jimmy Johnson is a lock and it seems every year that goes by some of the shine comes off Shanahan's resume. I think Seifert will not make it in due to the impression right or wrong, that he inherited Bill Walsh's team and system and was a good caretaker.

I think Coughlin's best argument besides the possible two Super Bowl titles is career playoff wins. His winning percentage doesn't jump off the page the way some other coaches do. His 11 playoff wins ties him with Parcells and Marv Levy for 8th all-time and has him ahead of Bill Walsh.

2 things I think are holding him back:

1) I don't think he gets the same coaching recognition as Belichick, Shanahan and Parcells do/did. All three are considered coaching "geniuses" to an extent, but Coughlin really isn't. I think that will hurt him since those 3 are the ones he'll most likely be compared against.

2) I don't think his record is good enough yet. I would think he'd still need about 3 seasons of 10-6 football to get around Parcells marks for wins and winning %.

All in all, I think he might end up the measuring stick for those who are or aren't qualified to get in. Unfortunately, I also think he ends up on the wrong side (out of the HOF), unless of course he wins another SB (in addition to this one).

Didn't he also make two conference championship games with the Jags when they were an expansion team? That in itself is a terrific feat. Add 2 rings and I think he gets in for sure.

I account for the conference title games through the playoff wins stat. I'm not downplaying that although I don't know that Hall voters would ever attach significance to going to Conference Title games and losing them.
