Big-time Pats homer here...and I'd take Elway for similar reasons (and not because he pwned the Pats). He's way up on the list for 4th quarter comebacks. His teams' SB performances always knock him down a peg, but he took 5 teams to the big show, the first three being nothing special talent-wise. Even when the Broncos bottomed out in the early 90s, he was putting up 4000yd seasons. Everyone remembers "The Drive" and "The Fumble" games, but forgotten is his playoff gem vs. Houston circa 1990. For the bulk of his career, he didn't have the all-around talent the other guys on the list had and when he finally did, he won back-to-back titles. When he was taking simply above-average teams to the SB in the late 80s, he was doing it with crap RBs (Sammy Winder, anyone?), mediocre WRs (Vance Johnson & Mark Jackson?), forgettable TEs (Orson Mobley, IIRC) and nothing special on the OL. Even when Marino was at his 4th-quarter-comeback best in the 80s, he had All-World center Dwight Stephenson keeping the rush up the gut cleared and could throw to the Marks Brothers...Elway never had that kind of talent until the title years.I would go with Elway. He could win games all by himself. Some of those teams he took to the super bowl were just flat out awful.![]()

really? I would take Brady if the team was mediocre. Favre won one super bowl- His defense was ranked #1 that year and the MVP of the SB was Desmond Howard. Take a look at Brady's team in 2001!If it is a very good team, I would pick Young. If the team is mediocre I would take Favre. If it is a team with a great defense and you wanted as few mistakes as possible I would take Brady.

There was nothing wrong with New England’s 2001 team. Troy Brown had his best year. The line was solid. Antowain Smith wasn’t flashy but they still finished in the top half of the league in rushing. Worse offenses have won the Super Bowl. The defense had a lot of pro bowl caliber players. Brady only threw for 18 TDs that year. It’s not like he carried that team.really? You laugh at Aikman who won the big game 3 times. You keep Manning and his "oh for" in the playoffs.
I took Young first and Favre second because of their flexibility and ability to avoid the rush...you can stick either of those guys in any system and they'd win...I don't know if I'd say that for some of the other QBs on this list.If it is a very good team, I would pick Young. If the team is mediocre I would take Favre. If it is a team with a great defense and you wanted as few mistakes as possible I would take Brady.my answer would depend on how good my teams D is, who the recievers and RBs are... as well as how well the offensive line plays.you can't pick a QB for your team in a vacuume.
Wow you must really like to lose. You can have all five of those guys. I'll take Dan Marino
Marino. Regardless of your choice, to not have him on this list is just ignorant. And you could pick the QB at the peak of his career, which of these five guys would you pick?John ElwaySteve YoungBrett FavrePeyton ManningTom Brady I would take Steve Young.
Brady is currently sitting at 15 TD's and 5 Int's. Smaller sample size obviously but you cant sneeze at a 3-1 ratio.BGP said:Joe Montana's playoff career numbers:
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/MontJo01.htm
463/732 for 5772 yards
45 TDs to 21 INTs
That TD/INT ratio is insane given the HUGE sample size.
I'll take this guy.
Are you in the wrong thread? I dont think that was the question being asked. If I wanted to start a team with just one player, I wouldn't choose a quarterback. It would either be a DT or a OT. Haven't put that much thought into it with regard to picking a specific player, but it certainly wouldn't be a QB.

Sorry. I see it's pretty typical for people to give too much credit to the quarterbacks. I feel this thread is another example of that. Same goes for running backs. Are you in the wrong thread? Manning. And you could pick the QB at the peak of his career, which of these five guys would you pick?
John Elway
Steve Young
Brett Favre
Peyton Manning
Tom Brady
like I said, I believe marino has a winning record against all of those QBs except maybe steve youngWow you must really like to lose. You can have all five of those guys. I'll take Dan Marino
Then start your own thread, then. This was not a listing of who I think the best five clutch QB's ever are or anything like that. I was merely curious as to which guy would get picked from those five particular QB's. Not including Marino was not a slight by any means. Also, I didn't include Montana, since I assumed he would be a runaway winner.Marino. Of these 5 guys i'd probably have to take Manning from Sept-Dec, and Brady in January. Manning has proven to be on another level during the regular season at times, as in complete control of his offense. If his peak was the 04 season, then he was clearly unstoppable. Of course his January struggles are widely publisized, which is where Brady comes in. Nobody has appeared as unflappable as Brady in January. If it's a playoff game, then there's nobody as cool or as under control as Tom Brady. He will never put up the statistics that a Manning or Favre would have in the primes of their careers b/c of the Patriot system, but he's your guy if you need a big win in a big game. And you could pick the QB at the peak of his career, which of these five guys would you pick?John ElwaySteve YoungBrett FavrePeyton ManningTom Brady I would take Steve Young.
A talented athlete is talented regardless. It isn't as if someone's talent decreases because a few rules change. Cap Anson might have played during a time when they pitched underhand. However, he was talented. He would do well even during this day and age when they pitch the ball much faster. Talent is talent. The game has evolved a lot, even over the last 10 years and I often wonder how some of last generations stellar QBs would fare in the modern-day NFL. So if the game was played "in current times", I would lean towards Peyton Manning, as he has proven to be a winner now and know todays defenses better than most. And you could pick the QB at the peak of his career, which of these five guys would you pick?John ElwaySteve YoungBrett FavrePeyton ManningTom Brady I would take Steve Young.
My mistake. That is not the way I took the thread. Out of the guys you chose, I would take Steve Young clearly #1 and then a close 2nd tier of Manning and Brady (it is really hard to gauge the dome factor for me) and then Favre and Elway in the next tier. Then start your own thread, then.
