If you outlaw fantasy sports, only outlaws will play fantasy sports (1 Viewer)

Hi Folks,

In case you somehow missed it in the news, Fantasy Sports is under attack politically. States are out-right banning fantasy sports or proposing legislature that could do this shortly. And although the pressure is mostly centered around daily fantasy sports, some of this legislation doesn't try and make the distinction between daily and season-long games.

I am hoping you can step away from the bombardment of the commercials and the aggressive growth strategies of the DFS operators. We get it. No one likes their TV taken over. And we will be the first to say things aren't perfect. Super fast growth can create problems and some are appearing.

But most of you are on this email list because you love football and play some version of fantasy football. And make no mistake, it's all under attack. Congressman protecting their gambling interests in their states will just as easily make it all illegal.

All I ask is that you take a few minutes to read the petition. If it's something that you feel strongly about, sign it. If not, don't.

So the government is going to start raiding drafts/draft parties? Elliot Ness kicking down doors and pointing his Tommy guy at a bunch of soccer-dads in golf shorts and jerseys?

:goodposting:

The threats are only towards the companies that run fantasy sports leagues by taking a percentage of the pot. And that accounts for huge $$ in DFS. Just follow the money. Sure any all encompassing legislation would probably include FFPC, NFFC, etc. because there isn't going to be any distinction between daily and yearly FF. DFS made fantasy football too big too fast and when there is that much money people are going to start paying attention.

But, nothing can stop the private leagues you have with your friends. Nothing keeping you from doing DFS with a bunch of buddies either.

The same companies that somehow convince legislators that betting on the outcome of a game is not a game of skill, but bettinf on player's performance is

listen, there's no reason DFS should not have to follow th same rules as other gambling. Fantasy sports is no more a game of skill than poker.

additionally the whole "playing on each other's sites and winning" aspect is very concerning.

Dodds writes a book and sells subscriptions and apps directly related to playing DFS knowing it's unregulated and likely to have shady business going on and now wants us to sign a petition to keep that business model going? Sorry but investigate and regulate the hell out of it. Those gambling tens of thousands and selling information about only have themselves to thank.

"Hey look, we got NFL owners, the NFL, and the networks backing us, that somehow makes gambling on sports with us not REALLY gambling on sports!!!! It's a game of skill, but if you log on and play in our millionaire makers tournament you could win millions!!! Little lucky unskilled you could beat out the computer algorithms and professional statisticians at this game of skill!!!!!!!"

the same way they raid your friend's poker party
And if its in Fairfax they use SWAT to do it.
Well at a $20K buy in, it was the perfect chance to try out all that cool tactical gear thats been sitting idle. My car died on Little River Turnpike & while waiting for a AAA Tow Truck, a Fairfax County police officer, in what looked like riot gear, was testy with me for breaking down during rush hour. He did NOT sign on for traffic duty

:D

One or two 300K tournaments a year and nobody cares.

Million dollar tournaments every week, hold on fella.

And I kind of found that petition insulting; it is absolutely a gambling ring, especially DFS. Tell me how it's different than an online texas hold'um tournament exactly where the website take 10% of the rake? "Every year 50 million people play cards. There are many problems facing our nation, but passionate card players is hardly one of them."

I think we'd be better off admitting that it is gambling and use it to help legalize all gambling.

Daily fantasy sports has much more in common with traditional sports betting than it does traditional fantasy football. I won't sign a petition that tries to lump the two. Although I believe gambling should be legal, DFS needs government regulation and oversight like other form s of legal gambling. The typical neighborhood fantasy football league does not.

This is the exact reason I won't sign the petition. The fact that this industry is making money so fast that they can take over every single commercial break, whether you are watching a sports show or not, illustrates how much money they are making. The articles detailing the only way you can actually win is to write computer programs show the situation is not what they tell you on the commercials. The people employed by one site making money at the other show this is a shady industry.

Shut it down and make it illegal for all I care. It's not going to affect my local league.

Just be sure to use promo code SUCKERS.

Joe sent his speil...now Dodds.

Man...DFS must be paying nicely for them to be so worried about it drying up/becoming regulated.

Remember the days of Ol' Yeller? When the search function worked and we weren't getting this constant push to save DFS?

I do find it really strange and fascinating how this whole story has unwound based on one small event. Haskell posting that lineup information was not, IMO, much different from Burress' joke about Cosby.

Also that gambling and a "game of skill" are two mutually exclusive things. That one's weird to me, too, but I guess that it's based on the weird UIGEA exception.

I'm sure they're still licking their chops with DFS, but to be fair, I doubt any government regulations resulting from this will distinguish between the two. How would that happen; it's ok to play once a year but not every day?

[Editor’s note: FanDuel is an advertiser of PFT and PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio. Also, NBC Sports has an equity stake in FanDuel.]

DFS is going nowhere. The league the owners the networks they are all in bed. It will get regulated, but it will stay around

I tend to agree, but, isn't this still somewhat hypocritical? It would basically legalize betting on individual players while betting on the game result remains illegal. Why? Because of Vegas?

How is betting on a bunch of payer props any different than DFS for that week?

it is not different and it would be hypocritical

DFS had better lobbyists.

I was not going to sign the petition, but then I saw FanDuel's promise to send me unwanted email in exchange for supporting their financial interests and I was all Hell Yeah!
