If you were rebuilding for the long term... (1 Viewer)

If you were to decide to dismantle and rebuild your keeper fantasy team from scratch starting today and wanted to 'go young' to have a strong nucleus for many years going forward, who would you target that you can get fairly cheaply (even not so cheaply I suppose). Which 1st to 3rd year skill position players do you like that you think will be Top-5 studs within a few years and stay that way for a long time? Name one player per skill position:

QB: Cam Newton. May not be cheap though. Was considering Dalton but its hard to believe Cam can't put up consistent stats for years. Worth the risk.

RB: Demarco Murray by default. This one is tough. No young RBs come to mind that I feel 100% confident in.

WR: Julio Jones, just a bit over Dez.

TE: Jimmy Graham. Stud.

TE: Jimmy Graham. Stud.
There seems to a ton of young talented TEs. This might not be the best way to spend your investment allocations considering there really are a lot of strong options.Id just look for someone sitting on too many TEs and make my move that way. You also may just want to "steal" the older guy from teams with players like Hernandez and Graham the next couple years, until you peg one cheaply yourself.

May not be cheap? He should go for a king's ransom if he goes at all. How is he a risk? Especially when you're comparing him to Andy Dalton???

QB: Stafford

WR: Dez, AJ, Julio

RB: Mathews, Stewart(please sign with ATL in 2013)

TE: Jimmy, Hernandez(already mentioned but both were cheap before the year)

I'm trying to avoid listing guys like Cam, Graham etc whose value is already through the roof.

QB: Stafford (owners might still be a little jittery about his injury history)

RB: Ingram (it's a great time to buy)

WR: Britt (injured very early in the season, still extremely young, knucklehead risk gives you top 5 talent at a discount)

TE: Gronkowski (better production than Hernandez that you can get at a discount because of Hernandez)

Guys I like that perhaps you could get at lesser costs

QB... Ponder. Appears to have a nice future and people underestimate how athletic this kid is. There is a reason he looks so good escaping pressure.

By comparison from the Combine this past year...

-Ponder.......

40 time 4.65

34 inch vert jump

116 broad jump

6.85 three cone drill

4.09 twenty yard shuttle

-Newton....

40 time 4.59

35 inch vert jump

126 broad jump

6.92 three cone drill

4.18 twenty yard shuttle

RB...

Ben Tate (keep an eye on how Houston deals with Foster) Tate is a very good back who seems to have recovered from missing his rookie year to injury.

WR

Randall Cobb

This kid is the goods and plays in a prolific offense. I know it seems cramped in that offense as is, but he will be too good to keep off the field in due time.

TE

Fred Davis

He is only 25 years of age and plays in a Shanny lead offense that has been kind to TE's. He is quietly second in the league for TE yardage and is on pace for 1100 yards. He was drafted in the 2 round at pick 17 in 2008 and he has all the tools to be a heavily targeted TE for some time to come. He is on pace for 115 targets this year.

QB: Newton, Luck

RB: Richardson

WR: Dez, Green, Blackmon

From a value for money standpoint...

QB: Mallett

RB: D Lewis

WR: Baldwin, D Thomas

I still like Ingram and Stewart, and I'd be up for taking a punt on Spiller if I could get a cheap price.

This year has driven home to me that it is a pass first league. I'd target QB's and WR's over RB's. Odds are the Colts end up with luck. If that happens and Luck lives up to the hype, Pierre Garcon and Collie become nice buy low targets. If Manning returns, they're nicer still.

I took over a dynasty team this year that had Brady on it. In the rookie draft I took,

1.02 Julio Jones

2.02 Cam Newton

3.02 Lance Kendricks

5.02 Andy Dalton

I wish I could say I did it from skill, it was all luck.

True it's a pass first league. But if you're in a PPR keeper league, that just makes those great young receiving backs (McCoy, Mathews, Rice) all the more valuable in my opinion. You can find a No. 10 QB (Eli Manning, Big Ben, etc.) that will be undervalued enough for them to help you win.

Focus on WRs and a good QB. RBs turnover too fast. Look at a Dynasty startup from 2007 - 1st round RBs included Willie Parker, Larry Johnson, Laurence Maroney, Clinton Portis, and Shaun Alexander. Rudi Johnson went before Andre Johnson or Calvin Johnson.

No doubt, but I'm in more of a short-term league where only keep guys for 2 years. So I'm buying low right now on Ryan Mathews, for example.

That's not a dynasty league. Keeper leagues are a different breed.
