Get a pair of waterproof Keen sandals, although they are more like hiking boots functionally. Easily broken in, if even necessary. They're genius. I've got the Venice. The Arroyo looks made for the Inca Trail. You could use this one super comfy shoe your entire trip to Peru.
Also, call my bro if you need anything. Lives in Lima, been a guide for 10 years. As mentioned, saintfool used him. It's nice to deal with an American who knows Peru as well as any local.

I used Kayak and got $850 R/T from Minneapolis at the end of August (8/25 to 8/31).

I only wore a pair of Blundstones that had a new insert put in for comfort. Totally worked for me. My wife got a new pair of hiking boots a few days before our trip and had no problems. We didn't do the Inca Trail but that was fine for the light hiking and puttering around that we did.

kayak had flights for about $1000 directly from minneapolis. spirit air offered flights at $950 from chicago.

to pay for almost everything you'll need peruvian currency. you can exchange cash easily enough with very modest fees. there are ATMs all over and Visa/AmEx credit cards (even back cards) accepted usually.

I am posting this from an internet Cafe in Cuzco...we leave tomorrow for the 4 day trek to Machu Picchu. So far, the city have been fantastic. Much nicer and cleaner than I expected.I´ll report back next week with details of the trek!Incog.

yeah, we originally considered a trip there but opted to give peru a go, mainly on the strength of machu-picchu. if we go to SA again then Buenos Aires will definitely be on the agenda.

Gona fly out to Boston to spend Christmas with family. Leave the day after and return the 17th of January. We got ourselves 3 whole weeks!I have a list of a few places I have been told to see. Anyone know of any of these towns? Trujillo, Chachapoyas, Huancayo, Huaraz, and Huallaga Valley.

I can't recommend my buddy enough. He's been guiding for like 10 years, and knows EVERYBODY. He can even tell/help you with anything in Lima, where he lives. combination of altitude and the overall physical exertion over a difficult climb/hike can make it necessary. from what i could tell, the porters were used to carry the camp gear (tents, food, etc) more than personal gear.

Well, we leave in an hour for Peru (actually make a quick stop in Boston and Camden, ME to see the family for the holidays).
Have a 5 day trek to Macchu Picchu scheduled near the end of our 3 weeks there. Gonna hit up wine country for New Years. Besides that, not many plans.
Sonny - Your buddy Sean has been amazingly helpful. We are using him for our trek. We are taking the less travelled route up to Macchu Picchu. Thanks again for recommending him.

Can't miss it.Anyone been to Peru?We're going to take 2 weeks next winter, take a train ride through Lake Titicaca, hike the Inca Trail, visit Machu Picchu...It is our first stop of our plan to visit the new 7 wonders of the world (Machu Picchu, Great Wall, Petra, Christ the Redeemer, Colosseum, Taj Mahal, Chichen Itza). Hitting one up each year for the seven years.Very excited.

hahaha...I have been back in Canada for a while now. So long that I am already planning another trip, this time to SE Asia.BTW, if anyone is interested, B.A doesn't hold a candle to Rio de Janeiro. Probably the best city I have ever traveled to. LOVED IT!What happened to the update on the trip? Was he abducted?

Went last year...it was pretty awesome.
I would recommend doing the Lares Trek instead of the Inca trail if you want a more authentic experience...I used the SAS travel company, Paul was our guide...he was really good.
I'd also consider checking out Buenos Aires and Columbia while you're down there. I went to Rio and Santiago also, but BA and Cusco/Machu Picchu were the most memorable for me.

I would recommend the Salkantay Trek if you are a little more adventurous. Takes you up over the 2nd highest mountain in the region Look At Me! 5 day adventure that goes through the jungle as well.

Seriously, Hsck, contact SLBD's travel pro. He can talk you through everything and do as much or as little as you want. He put a custom travel itinerary together for my wife and I. We wanted changes and he did it again. I think we might have even gone back to him a 3rd time. He made sure we were taken of and we traveled with very few worries.

Go see your doctor or optometrist and have them give you some Diamox and start taking it a couple of days before you go to Cusco. It aids with the acclimation.But yeah, I would still say take it easy. Just walking up a hill or a flight of stairs will make you feel like you heart is going to come out of your chest.

[/QUOTE]Yep. We stayed in Cusco before he hike and travelled the surrounding areas for a week or so. The hostel we stayed in was way up a hillside overlooking Cusco. There were like 200 stairs to get up to our place. And man, we almost died each time.
