I'm going to vent about my football team, UCLA Bruins (1 Viewer)

So I went to the UCLA/USC game last night, and I actually thought going in that we (the Bruins) had a decent shot to win, for the first time in about a dozen years. (UCLA actually won in 2006, but that was a huge upset, and I didn't go into that game with any expectations.) I probably based this more on the fact that USC's sucked lately than any decent play by my team. Also, I really wanted to win even more than usual because that arrogant ##### Lane Kiffin had been mouthing off in the newspapers all week long.

It was horrible. Just like all year, the UCLA offense had so many 3 and outs I lost count. The play calling, by Mr. Norm Chow, was so unoriginal, so uninventive, so pathetic, that it was nearly impossible to watch. The defense played well, only to watch the offense play so insipid and without heart or direction that they were probably frustrated as well. The worst was probably the final two drives- trailing 21-7 with under 7 minutes left, UCLA slowly drove the ball down the field, with absolutely no urgency, huddling up before every play, with seeming nonchalence, only to fail on a 4th down at the end of the drive having run a full 4 minutes off the clock. After USC had a long TD run to put the game out of reach 28-7, UCLA came back with a couple big plays and got a meaningless score with under 30 seconds left to make in 28-14. And when they got that last toudchdown, there was Rick Neuheisel high-fiving guys on the sideline, celebrating as if this was the victory score! Pathetic.

I am so sick of this. I am sick of Rick Neuheisel and his bull#### about how we're getting better. We're not getting better; we're getting worse. I am sick of Norm Chow and his big salary and his terrible play calling. I am sick of losing, especially to those evil bastards across town. I am sick of the fact that, with all of our supposed recruiting talent over the last several years, the only team in the Pac-10 we can count on beating every year is lowly Washington State. Every other team is better than the Bruins. We suck. End of vent.

Not every college team can be good.
I don't care about the others. UCLA consistently recruits a higher quality of football player than does Boise State or TCU. According to Rivals and Scout.com, they recruit better than half of the Pac-10 teams. I realize that recruiting is not an end-all, but it should at least mean something. But it hasn't produced any results.

USC has not really sucked at all this year. They have had 2nd half leads in 11 games and let a few of them get away.

And where was Lane mouthing off this week?

He told the Los Angeles Times that two other Pac-10 coaches called him (he wouldn't name names) and urged him to beat Neuheisel. He then said that if you took a poll of Pac-10 coaches, it would be unanimous that they all hate Neuheisel. Could be true (who knows?) but it shows a lot of class to put this in the papers. Also, what do you think a poll of SEC coaches would say about Kiffin?

That's not what he said:
"I've been called by two Pac-10 coaches," he says with a smirk. "I won't tell you their names, but they called me to say, 'Please don't let him win this game.' ''

I guess "Sark," former USC assistant Steve Sarkisian, who is now the head coach at Washington.

"I won't mention names," Kiffin repeats, "but if you called all the other seven coaches [in the Pac-10] they would probably say the same thing."
Considering Sark is a coach in the Pac-10 it's hardly a surprise that he might be rooting for 'SC. Not certain who the other would be.

Hey Tim,

We all know you follow UCLA. You don't have to mention that every time you talk about college football.

Later,

Clayton

It has surprised me they haven't done better with Neuheisel at the helm. He may be an ### but he can coach.

Went to the Oregon/UCLA game last year. Following the game, Neuheisel grabbed the PA mic and apologized to all the fans at the Rose Bowl. I'd never heard anything like it. He did give the spiel about "be patient, we're getting better." He's a helluva salesman considering how unremarkable of a HC he is.

Also, went to the ASU/UCLA game last week. His boys were up 17 and then proceeded to get blown out. I feel your pain: I thought I was apathetic about the Sun Devils, but those Bruins teams are just treading water from the Dorrell years.

At least you have academics. Oh wait, USC passed UCLA by this year in the U.S. News and World Report rankings.

why does this deserve its own thread?
good luck with that.
Honestly, I typically just ignore Tim (mostly because we don't post in the same types of threads) but what is the point of this? I'm sure there are official NCAA football threads and god knows there's like 6,000 threads devoted to just the Pac-10.Everyone gives Otis and Woz crap for the "look at me!!!" schtick, but at least most of their threads are interesting.

Can we get a list of threads you approve of?

everybody has been telling/asking/begging Tim to start fewer threads for years. He doesn't seem to care. If he thinks something is interesting, he's going to start a thread on it. If nobody responds, then the next thought he has will lead to another new thread. And so on.

Tim's threads generate traffic so he must be doing something right.I personally have no problem with this one.

Tim,

I wonder how much of what Norm Chow did at USC was actually Norm Chow....

I remember when the Titans got Chow, I was pumped to be getting such a "legendary and bold" playcaller.

His playcalling was terrible.

I think that when a team has talent that is above and beyond the talent of their opponents, it makes the coaches look good.

In USC's heyday, if Chow called a run play, it worked. If he called a pass play, it worked. Everything worked.

It was frustrating as a Titans fan, because his offense was terribly predictable and boring.

How is UCLA doing in recruiting? Because in college football, that's really 90% of it. If RN is recruiting well, the victories will come. If he's not, all the great coaching in the world won't help you.

And no one east of the Sierra even knew this game was being played or cared about the outcome

Back when USC-UCLA was relevant they at least played in the afternoon so the game was viewable in the East, kind of like the Oregon-OSU game.

I just checked...UCLA isn't in the top 50 for 2011 recruiting right now. That's not good. Hopefully they are in on a bunch of guys who will committ between now and signing day, because recruiting is the only way RN is going to turn it around.

What hurts more, losing to USC 11 of 12 years in football or losing to Montana in basketball?
Yeah, I watched that. They're struggling right now. But I remain optimistic. Howland is an excellent coach, and UCLA continues to get great recruits. They'll be OK. It's the football team that really bothers me.

Maybe Chow was overrated at USC. Maybe he's just old and tired and disinterested. Whatever the answer is, he's been extremely ineffective. I want him gone, and Rick as well. With regard to recruiting, we did get a few big names the last couple of years. It's UCLA, not Florida, and I would be happy with one or two 5 star guys and several 4 star guys. I don't expect the Bruins to be in the running for a national championship, but I would like to see a winning program and a competitive chance to win the Pac-10, the way it was under Terry Donahue when I was a kid.

An excellent coach with great recruits will never lose to Montana. Something is amiss.

They don't get the recruits where it counts - RB, line (both sides) and especially QB. End of story.

Welcome to the Rick Neuheisel age at UCLA. I have never understood what people saw in him as a coach. His teams play hard at first but then seem to lose something as time goes on. If you're lucky in a few years he'll leave UCLA, go on to another college, and shortly there after sanctions will be put on UCLA for recruiting violations or some other violation while he was there. He has done it before and probably will do it again. After yesterday he is probably sitting in his office with his acoustic guitar singing kumbaya and looking forward to the off season.

Why is this team so awful every year?

I was watching Fox Sports with Erin Andrews, Eddie George and Joey Harrington. Joey wanted to puff up UCLA's rich tradition, and after getting hung up for a second, had to reach for Danny Farmer and Skip Hicks. MJD down? Anyway, it just reeked of desperation. These guys are nearly always terrible. What's the problem?

it makes no sense. their campus is nicer than usc, can get cheap ca walk ons, and has tradionally been a better academic institution.their offense sure is looking good, which makes me a bit nervous.
