I'm so tired of all the hate (1 Viewer)

@Frosto - you talking garden variety bonehead hate born of ignorance or more like cynicism?

Cynicism and sarcasm have become pretty rampant to an irritating degree. And much more often than not they're not executed well by most people which makes it even worse. I used to trade in both way too frequently, I've tried to cut back on to a significant degree. It's hard when you see so much dumb stuff happening around the world. I think that ties in with previous posts about technology, we've got so much more exposure to out and out lousy human behavior it's hard not to be cynical all the time.

there was a poignant Humans of New York post the other day where the guy said he used to trafficked heavily in sarcasm, wit and putdowns after his time in a fraternity spent cracking on his brothers.

it became who he was.. the guy who had the jokes.  as he got older he saw how people didn't want to be around him as much anymore, how he was hurting feelings to make jokes and how now that he's alone he's lonely and realizes it's his own fault.

I was that way through high school and college. I gradually turned it down over that span because I saw how much damage it can cause if you're not careful. I also recognized it was a self defense mechanism to avoid addressing my own insecurities and keep others from exploiting them. Better off just addressing those insecurities head on and dealing with people from a more well adjusted perspective.

Sometimes I wonder how big a part technology, social media, 24/7 news, etc has played in all this.
It plays a huge, huge part. People get to choose their own "facts", immerse themselves in whatever they consider the truth, and "surround" themselves (on the internet) with others of like mind. Its dangerous as hell.

I took a class 5-6 years ago about the country not being nearly as divided, even on big issues, as the media and even polling portrayed. It was an interesting semester of lecture, even if I didn't agree with all of it. I guarantee that professor isn't teaching that course now, because its gotten much worse just since then.
