impending snow/wind event Sunday - where will be the question (1 Viewer)

for what it's worth, the Vegas line in the Pitt/Cin game is Pitt -9...

they expect a lot of scoring by the Steelers..

and I'm sure they've factored in the weather

I think Ben is a big time must-start this weekend.

Wonder if I should play Garcon tonight not knowing what's going to happen with Calvin, Wallace and Tampa Mike Williams on Sunday...

The Day: October 18th 2009

The Incident: a clear case of outthinking myself, I put John Kitna over Tom Brady due to weather.

Result: 5 TD's for Brady 2 full days of upset stomach for me.

Post Mordem: Never Again.

Sorry I know that was off topic.

Calvin plays inside just FYI. Good luck with the rest.

Not off topic at all (as mentioned earlier)... a prime example actually that some teams can still play football in the snow.A "cautionary tale" for those tweaking line-ups according to the Weather Channel.

Latest Pittsburgh forecast for Sunday is 36, rain/snow mix with an accumulation of about an inch. Winds about 20 mph. Not ideal weather, but certainly not a fantasy killer.

As always, that is obviously subject to change. But the latest info I'm reading is that the "big storm" is still yet to organize.

The Over Under has been reduced by 4 points since the opening line for Chi and Buff games.

Um really? Winds about 20mph? I think they will have even more of an excuse to run the rock all day.

I think the only players significantly affected by 20 mph winds are the kickers. Probably limits the deep ball, but no reason you can't have an effective passing game in that weather.

Skins, Jets, Bills, Steelers, Bears all may be effected by high winds and Precip

I am getting backup plans ready if this unfolds

Just an FYI
there is virtually no shot at snow (or any wintry precip) in NYC or DC. We will be on the east side of the low pressure circulation (warm side of the storm, southerly air flow)...Chi/buf probably a different story....pit mixed precip.
Correct. Even in Chicago there will be no effect since it will be out of there by game time. This storm is far from a lock and the computer models are all over the place. I was reading in some other threads that people were afraid of a Chicago Blizzard. That couldn't be further from the truth.Yes, it will be windy but will be overcast with temps in the 20s for kickoff.

One other thing. Watch for some rain in Charlotte, NC too

I studied meteorology

I briefly thought about the weather here, but I'm not going to let it affect my lineup decisions in any way. I have Fitzpatrick in one league and it's either him or Henne. Fitzpatrick in the snow or Henne against the Jets... I'll go with the Harvard man.

Updated forecast for Chicago

If current forecast trends continue, Bears fans planning to attend the game at Soldier Field Sunday would be well-advised to prepare for 25 mph sustained winds and gusts as high as 40 mph which are likely to drop afternoon temperatures into the teens while producing wind chills near zero and delivering bursts of lake-effect snow.

...

By Sunday, winds are to flood the city with cold air and possible lake-enhanced snowfall after a southward trek the length of Lake Michigan. That gives the winds plenty of time to pick up additional lake moisture which can contribute to snow shower formation. A huge vertical decline in temperatures combined with the impressive large-scale lift generated by the nose of powerful jet stream winds, appears likely to set the stage for snowfall Sunday.

Starting to get real folks. Both my QBs are in harms way.. Cutler and Roeth. Doh!

I feel your pain. I have Brady (Bears D and weather) or Fitzpatrick (questionable receivers and weather)

Pittsburgh forecast for Sunday (as of now) - Light snow accumulation possible. Near steady temperature in the lower 30s. South winds 5 to 10 mph...becoming southwest 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation near 100 percent.Shouldn't change the Steelers game plan much, if at all.

Thanks Cross. Im leaning Roeth over Cutler b/c there sounds like the possibility of much greater winds in Chicago. Cutler is due for a 4 INT game to begin with.

If you have two QBs facing potentially bad weather conditions and one of them is a future Hall of Famer I think the choice would be easy. Not trying to be glib but I think you have to go with Brady here in your situation.

I hope this is true. Snow is fun, rain is not. I know they replaced the sod in the middle of the field two weeks ago but a drenching rain would not lead to good field conditions.

Thanks for the heads-up.That said, I've heard this saying also: "if it's snowin' we're throwin'".
That's what I said in Braylon's career year when they visited Orchard Park. It was the Jamal Lewis show that day.
That game was in Cleveland
 I had tickets to that 8-0 game. My buddy and I were so excited to finally go to a Bills road game, and they ended up shutting down I-90 between Buffalo and Cleveland on that Friday or Saturday. We never made it....I still have the tickets.

I now have BOTH the Cleveland and Buffalo defenses. Was going to roll with Cleveland, then picked up Buffalo to block my opponent. If this storm is as predicted, it sounds like it will be a mess in Buffalo for this game. And these two offenses haven't exactly been lighting it up in good weather.KY
Weather.com has mid-30s and a rain/snow mix for Sunday. Sounds more like the Bills/Giants week 17 debacle a few years ago. Absolute worst possible weather to go to a game...pouring rain all game with temperatures hovering just above freezing and the wind howling the whole time. The weather can change unpredictably at any moment, but it doesn't sound like a storm-to-end-all-storms here. Then again, no one predicted that the southern suburbs would get hit with 3 feet of snow last week. But then again (#2), I live 10 minutes away from the 3-feet-blizzard part of town and I could see my front lawn when I got home from work. it's impossible to really predict.

because if you have been following the trends in the computer models (all, US/UK/Canadian) you would know that the upper air/surface features dont support a snow event for anyone east of the appalachians

I still remember a playoff game in Buffalo back during the Super Bowl run days vs the Dolphins. The weather was extremely snowy that day and the prevailing thinking that day was this was going to be a very low scoring game with both teams not throwing it around much and the game to be decided by the run and field position and turnovers. It turned out to be maybe the most wide open game postseason game I've ever seen or at least since the Dolphins/Chargers playoff game several years before. Final score 44-34 Buffalo with even the warm weather Dolphins able to move it up and down the field almost at will with short quick passes and lots of yards after the catch.

It turns out that if its snowy enough to make the field slippery but not windy enough to effect the QB's throws, the offenses will have a huge advantage over the defenses who have very little traction and are being forced to react to the receivers but their reactions become much slower and more treacherous on the slick field. One wrong slip and its a quick td for the offense. Just an FYI about bad weather games.

CHICAGO- SUNDAY- I have been watching this forecast. Currently- it is sunny and about 37 very calm. Saturday it is supposed to start to change with potential for rain turning to snow but Sunday is looking absolutely terrible with winds now being projected between 25- 40 MPH. The actual temperature will only hit about 20 so wind chills are going to be ridiculous. Use caution with the wind advisory and pay attention to this forecast because I just heard that the wind is going to be coming directly from the north and it is supposed to be vicious.

I guess people are finished with the "Way too early to worry about this" comments. lol This storm is... or i should say (will likely become) huge. That's why i brought it up in the first place. 1/4 of the country will be effected. Its just a matter of when the wind will begin howling, and how much precip will fall. Get yo popcorn ready!

I said he should start Brady.

And for anyone who doesn't know about our local geography, this is a recipe for significant lake effect snow. Soldiers Field is right on the lake on the southeast side of the Loop. That area is the most susceptible to lake effect snow because it's on the part of the Chicago lakeshore that catches a good portion of those winds out of the north and northeast.

I was actually supporting your statement. I would never bench Brady for Fits. That weather is looking rough though.

Yeah, I was at the mud bowl a few years ago against the Dolphins. Worst game I've ever seen.
