Importance of knowing your league's drafting past.. (1 Viewer)

Knowing your leagues tendencies is helpful, sure.  I was able to get my previous draft and break it out so I have the order of position taken.  For Ex Top Ten in 2016 was WR, WR, RB,WR,WR,WR, RB, TE, RB,RB.  The list goes on for 18 rounds...  Ok, so now I see it, then now what...

As with counting cards for example you have a better idea of what might come out next, a high card or low card but even that is not fool proof.

So the question is, you have 216 cells going down a column in a row of what positions were taken and when from a previous draft.  Taking a 3 year sample with same guys in the league would be even better.  But what do you do with that?  What have you done to make knowing these two letter abbreviations from the past in the order they happened help you in this the upcoming draft.

Curious how people use this information..

There's a spreadsheet that floated around here a few years ago for that.  I have a copy, still use it to set my vbd baselines.

One thing you can do is look at each team individually to see if they are showing any tendencies, and in particular tendencies from a particular draft position.  Like some people will go WR-WR if they pick late in the order, while some others will always grab at least one RB.

Would love to know where that is.  Could you post it?

I tend to break it down by Team Owner then left to right their position by round. It's great that Round 1 may've gone RB/RB/WR/RB/QB/WR/WR/RB/WR/QB/RB/TE but that doesn't help me a whole lot if different teams are picking at different spots. The below example would be far more helpful in telling me that they tend to wait on QB

Example

  • Team A: RB/WR/WR/RB/RB/QB
  • Team A: RB/RB/RB/WR/WR/QB
  • Team A: RB/WR/RB/RB/WR/QB
A lot of my leagues have been going for a while so certain teams have tendencies that show up. Some wait on QBs, some tend to 'fill out' the starters first, and some are aggressive and willingly go for QB or TE early. Knowing that Team X will wait on a QB and usually goes RB or WR at least gives me a 50/50 chance to fine tune a mock to what position they may go with. One team almost always went RB with their 1st pick and last year went WR/RB instead so it's not a foolproof guarantee but diagnosing tendencies can help more than just what position went when.

This is the 25th year of our draft with a lot of mainstays still around. I don't pretend to know what position they will take, but I do know how often I scratch my head at some manager's decisions. I like drafting near them which usually allows some players I'm not expecting to get to me. So there's that variable.

Also, I like to look back to see where the QBs get taken and how many by what round. I think this is really valuable in determining whether to wait or pull the trigger early at times.
