Indefinite New England Patriots Thread (7 Viewers)

Wilfork reportedly dragging his feet, whether thats true or he isn't getting any interest theres opportunity he might be coming back.

I feel like if they aren't going to patch holes in the secondary they should lock up Ayers and go after a WR.
IMO, WR is the least of their problems. CB, DT, OL, 3rd down RB all more pressing. If a WR wants to come in for near the league minimum fine, but they don't really need someone. They can survive with the guys they have on the roster.

I think the LB from CLE would be a good pick up (Sheard?).
I agree, Sheard, Ayers and Spikes the LBs I think that are worth signing.

I think adding weapons will be necessary with a less stalwart defense. I think the Pats are gonna take some guys in the draft, but adding a FA for a team friendly deal is pretty worth it imo. Cameron, Garcon, Harvin to name a few.

While Bill Belichick is spending his day at Louisville, Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio was spotted in attendance at Rutgers pro day on Wednesday, hanging out with Scarlet Knights offensive coordinator Ben McDaniels (brother of Josh).
they got any corners coming out this year?
Probably checking out Tyler Kroft TE.

The Mcdaniels brothers are both high on him.

What the hell is wrong with the Pats and Kraft? Their team is WAY WORSE after one day and they don't do JACK SQUAT. They truly have their heads up their ####.... as we relax and enjoy the Championship! What a surreal world the NFL has become. You just let your starting cornerbacks walk, one of them the best in the league. I hate this part of the BS. I can see why fans across the world just HATE the Pats, lol. We need people to just do their DAMN JOB. NO SOUP FOR YOU< WE ARE SMARTER THAN YOU.

I'd like to see the Patriots pull off a deal for Joe Haden. Didn't he sign a 5-year deal in 2010?
Might as well get Sherman too.
Yeah, good one. Sherman is in the same exact position as Haden.

Patriots agree with Jabaal Sheard on two-year dealPosted by Mike Wilkening on March 11, 2015, 6:59 PM EDT
Getty ImagesThe Patriots have landed one of the better edge rushers left in free agency.

New England has agreed with Browns outside linebacker/defensive end Jabaal Sheard on a two-year, $11 million contract with $5.5 million in guarantees, a league source told PFT’s Mike Florio.

Sheard (6-3, 264) recorded 23 sacks in four seasons with Cleveland. He was primarily a reserve in 2014, notching 44 tackles and two sacks.

A University of Pittsburgh product, the 25-year-old Sheard has played in 3-4 and 4-3 schemes, which could allow New England to deploy him at multiple positions.

Sheard is 35th in PFT’s Free Agent Hot 100.

I had no idea that guy was only 25

i have no idea what they do with mayo but those guys play 2 different positions --- I don't know that one has much to do with the other

The Patriots have agreed to a one-year deal with cornerback Chimdi Chekwa, according to multiple reports. (By Christopher Price via Weei)

Chekwa is a 26-year-old out of Ohio State who was selected in the fourth round of the 2011 draft. The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder has played in 32 games in his four seasons in the NFL, all with the Raiders. He has 44 tackles and four passes defensed in his time as a professional.

So is that it for Mayo?

edit: guess it figures. can't cover, better be able to rush.
I think he's coming in for Ayers, Mayo is more of an ILB whereas Sheard is an OLB/DE.

Pretty big add after losing Ayers. Hopefully Easily takes a step forward, either way they should probably add a DT for depth at the very least.

Nink and Chandler on the edge, Collins and Sheard on the outside. Hightower and Mayo on the inside. Have an abundance of OLB/DE now with Nink, Jones, Collins and Sheard all playing double duty this front seven is gonna be all over the place.

Just bucks spent on front seven, I guess. I thought they were having trouble getting Mayo signed.

Mayo is signed but is in the last year of his contract. He carries a $10.3 million cap hit this year. They really can't release him as he is on injured reserve still and would be due $4.5 million cash on his release (if still injured). His actual salary is $6.25 million. I think they want him back but at a fraction of the cost.

he's already under contract at a big figure

he's got guaranteed money tied to health, so speculation is that once he passes a physical there might be some kind of movement on his deal

A reserve for the Browns. Nuff said.

Was just going to post the same thing. Not really much of a discount. His old deal would have paid $15 million total over the same three years. So he only gave back $750,000 a year on average.

So, how does pats fan feel about the harvin speculation?
They certainly need more help at other places. IMO, he will have to take a deep discount to end up on the Pats. If he wants to play for peanuts, sure, give him a uni. I just don't think they really need him that badly and I don't see him taking a low, low offer.

way too many issues and would want way too much money

there's no way you make the circuit he just made without major personality issues

pass

which is really too bad because he's probably the ideal player for the pats, otherwise

of course, if he didn't have the issues he wouldn't be available

What, you're rather just get Patrick Peterson instead?
:wall:
It wasn't my idea, but it makes a ton of sense- trade for Revis!

Saints closing in on a deal with CB Brandon Browner. "Almost finished," source says.
Last I saw it was for the same money per year as the Pats signed him for last year. Not sure what the point was letting him go. I guess if they are going back to only zone coverage he wouldn't fit. I am guessing there is more to this then has come out so far.
yeah, I agree with all that

I've been thinking it was an odd situation since that report about letting him shop himself around

Cromartie signed with the Jets, so that's one less free agent option.
He's another man corner, though. Just heard Barnwell say what we've been saying: No Revis = No Man scheme (or a lot less) so no point having middling man talent around.

Back to zone, back to Arrington whiffing.. In Bill We Trust, I guess.

edit: Come ONNNN Butler!

For those scoring at home (or even if you're not), Jets +3 cornerbacks, Patriots -2 cornerbacks this week. Will be interesting to see how much the new Jets trio broke the bank.

The total for their three CBs turns out to be $127 million (if they all play out their deals).

4 years, $25 million for Skrine ($13 million guaranteed)

5 years, $70 million for Revis ($39 million guaranteed)

4 years, $32 million for Cromartie (don't know the guaranteed money yet)

Pats talking to Eagles about a trade for Evan Mathis
Didn't they already have a similar player in Mankins that they deemed was too old and too costly?

Mathis is a good lineman, but he was hurt last year and will be 34 during the season. Two years left on his contract for $5.5 million and $6 million.
