I think there are parts of Brady, just like for sure there are parts of Belichick, that wants to prove their greatness isn't restricted to beig connected to the other one.

Further, I think Belichick would trade Brady in a heartbeat if he felt it was the best move for the team. However, I don't think Kraft would allow him to do it.

 
I don't think Kraft would ever allow Brady to be traded, never say never but just just don't believe they ever pull that trigger.

agree. he'll be "allowed" to seek his own deal after '17 if he declines but wants to continue and JG's still rostered, but will neither be traded nor demoted.

 
Brady is on a pretty team friendly 4 year deal atm. 

2016 14m
2017 14m 
2018 22m
2019 22m

Brees just signed a deal that will pay him 22m this year and 24m next then void itself. In 3 years the salary cap will probably be an additional 20 million. If they can get Jimmy signed and some of their defensive core they will be set for possibly another era.

I doubt Jimmy wants to play back up for a few more years, but if they can get him signed to a big deal (for a backup) with escalators into starter money, who knows whats gonna happen with Brady.

Don't wanna see Brady go, don't mind to trade Jimmy for some premium picks, but I also wouldn't mind rostering two QBs for a few years.

The problem is, Jimmy G is going to want $18-20 million a year. To franchise him after next year would cost more than that for a year. I can't see the Pats paying $40-45 million on the QB position. 

 
You can't see a situation where the Pats sign him to a 3/4 year deal where he gets 8-10m with a 15m signing bonus and escalators if he starts games? He'd be getting 12-15m a year to be a backup with some room for more. Its a lot to ask of a kid who looks like hes about to break out, but I'm being pretty conservative with those numbers, who knows what the cap is gonna do, or why the Pats have been sitting on their hands knowing that they are gonna have close to 70m in cap space next year and they haven't resigned any of their defensive players.

Is it a lost cause, is it just time to sell?  :bag:

So the Pats have to re-sign half their defense and they are going to pay a backup QB $12-15 million not to play? Does that sound like something BB would do?

I don't see how 12 and 10 coexist past next season.  If Brady is really going to try to play out his contract, it's more likely Jimmy gets traded after this year if the package of picks is appetizing. 

As I mentioned earlier, Brady may retire if he gets another ring.  But past next year it becomes next to impossible to keep both guys. If you were Jimmy G, why would you want to keep holding a clipboard and take anything but starter money?

You're only looking at it from the teams perspective.

No way Jimmy G signs on as a backup for NE when he could sign as a starter for his choice of 3 or 4 other teams that will be bidding for his services.

Could be some competitive teams in need of a quality QB after next season. Cowboys, Jets, Cardinals, Vikings, Broncos ... why would Jimmy G want to sit another season or two on the bench?

I don't see a scenario where they can keep him. Pats will either trade him this offseason or franchise and trade him next offseason ... ala Matt Cassel to KC.

I suspect they will see if Jimmy can give it a go, and he'll either be the starter or the back up this week and start next week. Given that to the best of my knowledge the Pats have not even brought in anyone for a tryout, one has to think that means they don't think Garoppolo will be out for long, if at all. From what I heard this morning, it sounds like it's just a matter of how much pain he can tolerate.

 
I don't see Brady ever starting for a team other than the Patriots... but stranger things have happened. 

I also would be shocked if he rode off into the sunset IF he got a ring this year.... Playing is his life, he's made it clear he wants to play into his 40's... I think he plays out the contract, and I think Kraft lets him.

We don't know what we don't know, but if BB is still head coach and Brady's play starts to slip and he starts losing, turning the ball over, or otherwise starts putting up 3 and outs on a regular basis, I'm not sure they will just let Bray go out there every play. I realize that is hard to visualize and comprehend as that has not been how Brady has played, but at some point he will not be the best option for the team.

BB might keep him on the team, but I would not 100% with certainty that he would keep starting Brady if the team started a year 2-7 or if he was turning the ball over like Peyton did last year.

In some ways, I think Brady was posturing and marking his territory that he is the Patriots starting QB and that isn't going to change anytime soon. As long as they keep winning and his performance is still near the top of the league, I agree with him. At some point that will change. 

I personally think they will have to carry Brady away from football kicking and screaming, as I don't see him going quietly. So an injury to Brady may be his undoing at some point.

Garoppolo has looked good for 6 quarters and hasn't even had the chance to play with Gronk yet. The most likely outcome is the Pats trade Garoppolo, but if they really think he is the next great QB, it will be hard for them to part ways with him.

 
Thats basically how I feel. Brady said he's gonna play until he sucks, I think he will get hurt before he sucks so his departure will likely be sudden but they'll see it coming.

I think it is time to plan ahead but the math has to work and I don't disagree that Jimmy is gonna wanna get paid, I just think it's possible to get him signed to a long term deal with a lot of language that would benefit if he was or wasn't the starter.

Let me make the language easy for you for Garoppolo. 5 year deal, $90 million, $42 million guaranteed. No contingencies for starting or sitting. With the salary cap going up pretty regularly, you might have to bump both of those up by $10 million.

There is NO WAY he will take a contingency deal and accept only a quarter or half as much money whether he is starting or not. That would potentially cost him tens of millions of dollars.

Garoppolo is signed through 2017. If they wanted to shell out the money, they could franchise him for 2018. That's how they could force Garoppolo to stay in NE (if the Pats want to literally chain him to the team). That would get Brady through age 41.

I still say this town isn't big enough for the both of them.

It doesn't appear that he will see many carries, so at this point he would be pretty much be getting receiving production only. There may be weeks where he will be featured more than he has been, but that may not happen until Brady gets back. He doesn't appear to be someone in line for a big workload. He's probably a hold for now, especially given the amount of guys that are banged up right now. I guess it depends how deep your league is.

So Andy Dalton money.

Several teams would be willing to make such a deal ... you're not going to be able to pay him more than he would get elsewhere.

 .... and Garoppolo would be the starter for whichever team ponies up the dough (and 1st rd draft pick). Not contingency.

Belichick will trade him for an early 1st this year, trade down for a bunch of later picks this year and next ... and draft the next Garoppolo in the 4th round.

Also, Belichick would then control what team Garoppolo plays for. You can bet he won't want him to hit free agency and chance that the Jets or Bills land him. He'll be sent to the NFC ... Bears should have a nice early pick this year.

I know you like what you see but logic and Belichicks history have Garoppolo going elsewhere. You're stuck with Brady for a few more years.

at ARZ - So the win over ARZ is a lot less impressive now after seeing what the Bills did to them yesterday. I think we all thought they were one of the top dogs in the NFC. They've obviously taken a giant step backwards from last season.

MIA - The win wasn't unexpected ... but MIA should have lost to the Browns and their back up QB yesterday ... if not for 3 missed FG by CLE. The team is very bad.

HOU - Came in with wins over CHI and KC. Was thought of as a good team but started making huge mistakes vs the Pats and it just snowballed into uglyness. Team probably is better than they showed. As much as I'd like to give credit to NE's D, game results seemed to be more of an implosion by HOU special teams and offense.

moving on to BUF - 2 losses by 6 points to BAL and NYJ. Make coaching changes and they tear up the "not who we thought they were" Cardinals yesterday. I don't think Garappolo will be well enough to play.  Seems more like a 4-6 week "grade 2" injury. So Pats starting Brissett with a bad thumb. Could be trouble.

 
Reports were 2-4 weeks for Garoppolo. I don't see the Pat's signing anyone, cause if they wanted to they would have done so by now. 

 
Prediction: Brissett warms up pre-game and then goes back to the locker room.  Just before players are to be announced, he heads to the magical bathroom that was allegedly used to deflate the game balls vs. Indy.  While in the bathroom, a hidden door opens and out comes Tom Brady - in uniform, wearing Brisset's number, and in blackface!  Tom stares at Brissett and simply motions for him to step behind the hidden wall.  Brady thinks to himself "the things I have to do to keep this job, jeez!"  A moment later, out of the bathroom comes Tom Brady dressed somewhat convincingly as Jacoby Brissett.

Just before kick-off Brady walks over to the sideline and like Dorothy Michaels in Tootsie starts talking to an oblivious Bill Belichick.  Finally Brady grabs Belichick by the hoodie and says "It's me, Tom Brady"  Belichick stares in silence and Brady continues "Yeah, that's right I'm baaaack...and a week early.  I deflated those balls, it's true. But you have NO idea who you are messing with 'Lil Bill. I did the deed that sent Hernandez away for life.  Yep, set that dude up like a mother $#@^!  If you know what's good for you, you won't say anything and you WILL call a WR screen to Edelman to start the game.  OK, LET'S DO THIS!  [followed by a high-pitched scream of] WOO!"

Patriots win 27-13

Three days later ESPN breaks "Blackface-gate."  Patriot fans defend Brady from all allegations with "it couldn't have been Brady under center because there was a 3rd and 3 pass in the second quarter that was thrown high and out of James White's reach. Brady would have NEVER missed such an open target as that.  Nope, couldn't have been him"

Belichick answers all inquiries at his next press conference with a stammering "uhhh, we're on to Cleveland" except this time it involves him blinking out "help me" in morse code between beat writer questions.  Unfortunately none of the beat writers fail to recognize any behavior change in Belichick so his silent pleas go unanswered.

Without any proof Goodell bars Tom Brady for life.  Goodell's body is never recovered.

As expected, the news seems non-existent on Dion Lewis' recovery at the national level.  Any insights from locals?

There is nothing really to report as no one has seen him.

I've given my best guess (which is really nothing more than a guess). The rules for players coming off the PUP List were changed a few years ago. Teams now can activate a player anywhere from Week 7 to Week 15. IMO, Lewis may not see the field until Week 10. He would be eligible to play Week 7, but the Pats have a bye in Week 9.

The whole thing doesn't add up. Lewis was supposed to have a clean up procedure on his surgically repaired knee. Most clean ups involve a 3-4 week recovery time. Lewis was said to be looking at a 8-10 week window.

Given that Lewis has not been practicing, has taken no contact, won't be in game shape, and hasn't even been seen jogging or doing anything, He will probably be on a snap count once he comes back. I doubt he will step in and do gangbusters out of the gate. Factor in that he might have no chemistry with the offense, and I would be more surprised if he did well than if he did poorly. Last we heard about Lewis, the quotes were that he had "a good chance of playing in 2016." Add that all together, and I am not expecting much out of Lewis this year.

I own Lewis in a couple of redraft leagues, and I am tempted to drop him because I need the roster spot. I might hold on to him until the team announces what they plan to do with him.

A highly appreciated, but very sobering/depressing analysis.  I've been plotting trading my #2 in the next week or two based on Lewis and Washington streaming--may need to postpone those plans.

Can't stand Skip.  But surprisingly he wasn't over the top on this, one way or the other.  Sharpe had some interesting stories, like it or not.  One that stuck out was about Josh and how he got caught filming the 9ers in London.  When Pat Bowlen found out, he was not having it and that was that.  I don't know who the other "boob" was but he was the most informative and factual.  Boob or not, he did his homework.  There was a lot of stuff I never heard about and/or forgot.  

Anyway, I won't go on, I can see you guys don't care to discuss. And FTR I'm a Bill B fan, but I also don't wear blindfolds.  It is what it is, just sports.

Pretty obvious that Brissett wasn't able to throw the ball. Running the ball on the first 3 3rd downs ... including a 3rd and 11. 

3 total pass attempts in the first half. Not able to squeeze the ball could also be why he fumbled.

I think the Pats would have been better off starting the QB with more career passing TD's than Brissett ... Julian Edelman.

As much as I wanted to see Edelman take some snaps at QB, just out of pure curiosity and intrigue, I'm glad he didn't.  Brissett got beat up in that game - not something I want happening to my number 1 WR.

But, it certainly would have been interesting.

 
The media in New England criticize the coaching staff for having such a conservative game plan vs the Bills.

Not one of them acknowledged the fact that Brissett had a smashed thumb and that would be why they weren't more aggressive with throwing the ball.

The Pats only other choice was to bring in a QB off the street ... but would have cost them another roster spot and salary cap $ .... only to release that guy the next week.  They chose to take the L.

They were content to hand the ball off and go through the motions to see if the defense (and Blount) could win the game by themselves ... but the Bills game was all but conceded before the teams took the field.
