Indefinite New England Patriots Thread (6 Viewers)

Was hoping for a LB upgrade, once Bolton and Sherwood were gone Spillane was in that next tier. Seem like a Vrabel type guy.

LV LB Spillane signed.

I like it.
If the Pats only end up signing guys from NE, TEN, and LV, they are going to be right smack dab where they started from. Those teams combined to win a total of 11 games last year. Spillane was the 66th rated LB by PFF. Landry was the 51st ranked edge defender (and hasn't played at the same level post ACL injury). I get it, they need bodies. (Spillane was an UDFA that Vrabel brought in in TEN.) Hooper was a decent contributor last year (but certainly not a major piece.) Still waiting for the big signings (and will likely keep waiting).

DT Milton Williams coming to Foxboro according to NFL Network.

The Patriots are signing defensive tackle Milton Williams, according to a source. The Patriots pried him away from the Panthers. The deal is worth $26 million per year, per NFL Media.
Now that’s a good one imo. When it was reported he was going to Carolina I was pissed. No excuse for the Pats not to top them.

I get it , it's not my money . . . but Williams said to be coming to town for 4/$104M. Maybe that's an inflated number, but that is a TON for a DT.

It really seems like nobody wants to come here unless it’s for a premium unfortunately. He did have several teams after him so I’m assuming that probably the going rate or pretty close atleast.

When you are 4-13 two years in a row you have to pay top dollar…no way around it.

Let us know when the Pats make a roster move you actually like. :wink:

Well, I like that they are trying a lot harder than they were last season to bring in new players. They are bringing in new blood and signing some decent players. Put another way, they aren't simply adding the Osbourn's and Okorafor's of the world.

The offense (for now) hasn't changed much at all, so that's disappointing. But maybe they can win a couple of games 9-6 this year.

Who knows how this will all play out, but I'm having a hard time not being impressed by their aggressiveness here and also that they secured some top names that were out there. There was risk nobody would want to come, but money talks.

Agree on the offensive side of the ball, but maybe there's some trades in the works and there's always the draft.

Something tells me that the next tier of WRs may be a bit depressed. Could see them waiting for that to settle to grab a Kupp, Diggs, etc. Would be great to solidify this a bit more so when it comes to the draft, they can just take the best player available.

Agreed...unfortunately there just isn't much in FA on the offensive-side of the ball...they took a run at Godwin and the reporting is they offered 20 mill more than Tampa but it appears he wasn't leaving Tampa...this is day one and I am impressed with what they did but there is no doubt this is just step one...they have to improve the talent on the offensive-side of the ball and how they do it should be very interesting.

Going to have to trade for an impact WR (Kupp may be the best they can hope for). Otherwise I'm expecting Westbrook-Ikhine (personally think he's close to a lock to be signed) to be all they bring in at WR and that would be a disappointment.

At this point, if they can draft Hunter, he would likely be a WR. He would be probably be overkill at CB.

If he is available and WR is his main position that would solve a lot of issues...the problem is there are no guarantees he will be there at #4...they still need to bring in another WR or two.

Felger and Mazz...of course, all negative. So predictable.

Although Felger impressed with the M. Wiliams signing.

I mean...what the hell do you want them to do? They signed a handful of guys that they were linked to per reports.

If they signed nobody, they'd still be complaining.

They need to add more than that...as well as another RB and a young TE.

I had to turn them off today...no one second guesses with negativity like those two...especially Mazz...he is painful.

It's their formula to poke the fanbase, just have to see it for what it is at this point. It's all about ratings and getting people riled up, they know their audience. There are some solid nuggets and discussions mixed in there IMO(Bedard and Gasper guest spots particularly), that's why I still listen.

Felger's Sports Sunday show is no longer on late night on Sunday nights. I tried watching the other two local Sunday sports shows(CBS and ABC) last night. . . . . . .Brutally unwatchable, Steve Burton has really lost his fastball(not that he was ever that good in the first place) really unwatchable. Will miss Sports Sunday :mellow:

The ratings speak for themself...it's a love/hate thing...everyone complains about them but they still keep tuning in (myself included)...it would be nice if EEI could actually figure something out but they have been close to irrelevant for awhile.

WRs available:

* C. Kupp
* A. Cooper
* S. Diggs
* D. Slayton
* M. Williams
* E. Moore
* K. Allen
* D. Hopkins

Don't love that list, but we need a #2 type that's competent. Bet we're going to wait this out a bit. Also think odds are increasing that WR could be in play in the draft. Maybe trade back into the end of round 1 for Golden or Egbuka (if Hunter isn't there at 4).

Wonder if it still makes sense to go after OT C. Robinson?

Also thought they'd go after DT L. Onwuzurike but after spending big on Williams this is probably off the table.

Josh Dobbs?

Hmmmm.

Could Milton be on the move?

Interesting...being reported as a 2-year deal for 8mil with 3.8 guaranteed...they needed to replace Brissett with another veteran so this makes sense...but as you point out it does make you wonder about Milton.

I see the Dobbs signing as bringing in a veteran so that the Pats aren't going in to next season with only two sophomores at QB. Comes with the bonus of Vrabel being familiar with Dobbs from his his two games as a Titan (albeit both on losing efforts). As exciting as Milton looked in Week 18, he's still a developmental project at QB. Dobbs brings some unexciting but stable experience as a backup. I don't see the incentive to move Milton so soon unless Vrabel doesn't believe in him and wants to get a draft pick now rather than cutting him after training camp.

Slayton back with the Giants.

Wonderful choice to have around Maye.
He's an actual genius.
He's been kicked down the road, had to make comebacks with questionable talent around him, and is always positive and gracious. He's known for pointing out things on the sideline to OCs too.
Great QB room guy.

It's debatable when he plays but wonderful for the QB room

And there it is...

...Mack Hollins ladies and gentleman.

The WR room has now been addressed.
Played with Josh with the Raiders, so I'm guessing that was his call. Doubt they sign NWI now, which I'm fine with. But need to keep going, Hollins shouldn't be more than depth.

Ideally, they'd keep Milton as the backup, and have Dobbs just be a locker room/game prep guy.

I'm seeing quite a few comments elsewhere that Mack Hollins is underrated. He's given a lot of credit for his downfield blocking, good hands, and great overall attitude.

He was someone the Titans wanted then Arthur got in ATL. He's lost his deep speed so he's pretty questionable as a receiver but he's still a big boy blocker on the outside. In the red zone, ya still gotta wonder if his size is too much for a smaller DB too. He's just older limited hanging on type now.
Hooper and Hollins are two mobile blockers.

Vrabel's teams are tough. He wants an attitude established. After, it's questionable how much the hitters play. They're both older 30? 31? and probably to show some younger guy what's what.

Yup...I have seen numerous reports that the Patriots WR room besides not being very talented was not the most mature place...Hollins definitely checks that box...they are still desperate for an upgrade in talent at WR but this is a very good culture signing.

Titans have 26 free agents to be signed today or free agents tomorrow.
Mostly depth mostly cheap
It could set up a big day for Vrabel filling his 90 tomorrow.
Not exciting at all just a lot of hard working depth he developed. Only reason I mention is it's a lot of bodies.
The Titans weren't good. I think he's gotta sign enough of his boys to then focus on "the new" and move forward with whatever he learned from his perspective with the Browns and Schwartz' candor. If I were him I might tell Wolf to get me 5-10 of them just to initiate that change and (always can) have a done with that let's move forward vibe.

Felger and Mazz...of course, all negative.

Why do you let any of these guys take up rent space in your head? They're awful. I used to watch them piss drunk in the middle of day and think, "Boy, if you thought I was miserable then you haven't listened to these guys." How could you make so much money on relentlessly negative energy? I half-think shock jock radio sent part of the country down the absolute ****ter.

Like a moth to a flame.

I had to get their take on all this.

I took a mental pounding for about 10 minutes and then shut it off.

Pats are the 2nd best team in the AFC East. If Maye takes another step, they get an impact player with that 4th pick(Hunter) and maybe a veteran WR.....they won't be an easy out for any team.

After seeing Jonathan Allen get 3/60 from the Vikes, I like this move a million times better. Williams is younger, entering his prime and was more productive. ~$24M is the going rate for young DTs, so really only a slight overpay.
