Who's the guy to own ?

The Indianapolis Colts have seen both of their starting cornerbacks from last year exit via free agency this offseason. Nick Harper is now in Tennessee and Jason David moved on to New Orleans. Marlin Jackson and Kevin Hayden, a first round and second round selection respectively from the 2005 draft, are expected to take on the starting roles.

It's the nature of today's NFL where it's nearly impossible to keep great teams totally intact. Jackson and Hayden were obviously highly rated picks from last year and it's time for them to prove themselves. Expect opposing quarterbacks to test them early and often.

Depends on what kind of scoring system you have. In a big play heavy system that doesn't use corners as a separate position, none of the Colt CBs have definite value. In a tackle heavy/neutral system with/without corners as a separate position, Marlin Jackson will have good value. Hayden is a nice player, but hasn't shown nearly enough run support skill or ball awareness to be any more consistent than Nick Harper was in the boxscores.

Projecting Jackson's career stats over a 16 game season yields 58 solo tackles. Some of those games had Jackson as a safety, many more came from games where he was a situational corner/safety. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect 60 plus solos from Jackson, which gives him good value. If he is targeted enough, he could hit 70 solos with double digit passes defended which would put him in DB2-DB3 range.

Daymeion Hughes is the wild card here. He may be the best corner on the roster. He projects as just as physical against the run as Jackson has been and, by all scouting accounts, will have better ball skills.

Neither of those guys are a lock to be the next Ronde Barber or Charles Tillman in this scheme, but both have a shot at being more IDP relevant than Nick Harper or Jason David ever were.

How about a scenario of backing up Hayden with Hughes ? If Hayden gets picked on he might put up decent statlines early on, if he's eventually replaced I can plug in Hughes and not miss a beat.
