Indy Defense: Legit or Tease? (1 Viewer)

They looked awfully good tonight. If you would have told me that the Colts D would hold the Saints offense to 3 points I would have thought you were mental.

I am considering dropping Jacksonville's Defense...

Jury is out. I'd like to have seen the Saints actually have Deuce pound it up the middle of this defense. To me, that's my biggest concern. That, and throwing over the top to a "big" WR (on the opposite side of Marlin). I think OC's will figure out a way to really hurt this defense. That being said, I've said this ALL offseason, this back 7 is gonna make people PAY for getting their big plays. Every single guy the Colts roll out in the back absolutely LOVE to bring the noise and knock peoples' blocks off.

Fear the injuries to your starters when playng the Colts this season.

Thing about the Colts D is that they get ahead so fast that teams feel as if they have to outgun Peyton to win and then Indy's D can just sit back in coverage with help.

Stick to the running game...shorten the game...and make plays. Lot of dropped balls by Aints players and bad throws from Brees too. Once Indy got way ahead...it made their defense look good.

easier said than done . . .

indy has shown they have a legit defense in the playoffs last year and the season opener, but they had extra motivation in those scenarios... it will be interesting to see how things look midseason... hopefully bob stays healthy

When Indy shuts down a good offense on the road, I'll believe it. Even last year, they were much better at home than on the road.

Deuce averaged nearly 4y/c. He deserved more than 10 attempts, especially when you consider how the NO defense was playing and the defense Brees was looking into. They were patient with the passing game for awhile working EJ in the middle but completely abandoned the running game in the second half. When they didn't run Deuce on 4th and less than a yard in the 4th I knew the game was over unless INDY started turning the ball over. Really bad call I thought.

I think they are legit (I have had them ranked in the top 10 since rankings started), because the Colts will usually be leading, and that will allow their great pass rushing DEs to pressure QBs, get some sacks and create turnovers. Getting rid of the run defense liability known as Cato June, putting Keiaho in the lineup, and most important, having Bob Sanders healthy makes them a MUCH better run defense than they were. If their run defense is good, they will be a great fantasy defense because if teams are forced to throw the ball a lot, Freeney and Mathis can pin their ears back and go after the QB, and they will cause problems.

For any of you amateur flim-studiers: Why does the indy defense (at least since last year's playoffs started) not seem susceptible to any of the normal weaknesses of a cover-2 defense: Runs up the middle forcing the safeties up, mid-deep passes down the seam between the zones, and out patterns over the corner but in front of the safety before they can come over? Is it their personnel? Or does Dungy do something slightly different with his scheme than other 'copycat' cover-2 coaches.

The defense has something to prove this season. Yes, they are much better at home. Their DBs love to hit. Keiaho is going to dominate in the WLB. Rob Morris is playing his best football at SLB.

And Bob Sanders is awesome. As a matter of fact, the rumor is that Superman wears Bob Sanders underware!

Geaux Colts!

:hophead: Bingo! The defense is good but they are helped a ton by the offense. Lots of rest and will be protecting big leads all season. Teams will fall bhind and become desperate - start chucking prayer balls - thats when you get turnovers and garbage time TDs like last night. No way that guy scores if it was a close game - NO was done. I see this happening quite a bit and love Indy Def. See them finishing top 5 this year not because they are that good but they will have a ton of opportunities handed to them thanks to that offense.
