Interactive Map of Baseball Fan Bases (1 Viewer)

Based on FB posts makes it a weird source. Yankees and Red Sox are mentioned everywhere, but that could just be because people are complaining that the only games ESPN shows are the Yankees - Red Sox games.

Odd note, no Mets dominated areas. Not even at Citifield. Didn't notice any other teams like that.

My work Internet access blocks a lot of interactive features, so maybe this is something I can't see, but:

All those gray areas in the West & South ... that's Yankee country? And those pink areas in Idaho & Utah ... Red Sox Nation?

A's get no love, even in Oakland.

Good catch. I figured there would probably be one or two more, but I couldn't think of any.

I wonder how that would've been in the A's LaRussa era?

The Yankees are so entrenched ... but I wonder if the Mets were ever at least #1 in Queens (or elsewhere on Long Island) during the Gooden-Strawberry years.

Some weird things I've noticed while playing around with the map:

Just west of Dallas, there are two counties where the third favorite team is the Cubs.

The Cubs, in the 1980s, became a nationally-popular team due to their broadcasts on WGN (which most cable outlets at the time carried). The Rangers were a dumpster fire back then ... I bet this map circa 1980 would've showed the Astros owning Texas pretty handily.

I know at one time (mid-80s or so), the Cubs were #1 in New Orleans (N.O. had no minor-league team then). Then the Astros started broadcasting three/four games a week in New Orleans, and carved out a good sized niche in the Crescent City as well.

Check New Orleans for me, if you don't mind. I'm guessing bandwagoners have shot the Yankees & Red Sox pretty high locally, while the Astros & Cubs still have a presence. Though the AAA Zephyrs are a Marlins affiliate, they seem to have no following at all locally.

Good call. All of NO looks to be either Yankees, Red Sox and either Cubs or Braves. And by your reasoning, I'm assuming that's because TBS used to broadcast Braves games the same way WGN did the Cubs.

Nice detective work.

Wow ... it's sad that the Astros just fell off the map locally. They only broadcast their games here for a few years, though (on a local UHF station, not cable).

The Astros were the parent club of the Zephyrs, too, for a while (through the 90s, at least), and I know at that time the Astros still were popular locally. Only in the 90s, we'd catch the Astros on one of the Fox Sports networks (FS Southwest?).

As for the Braves -- they picked up a ton of local bandwagonners in the 90s, when they started getting good. TBS did show their games in the 80s, too ... but at the time the Cubs were a much better team and just clicked locally.

Grey areas don't have a dominant team. A lot of them favor the Yankees, but only by 15% or so. The Red Sox and Cards have a lot of grey area pull too.

Fun stuff. For anyone wondering, the only teams not repped are the As, Mets, White Sox and Blue Jays.

Not sure about Facebook as a source either, but still interesting.

FWIW, the map doesn't take into account the number of times people mention a team, but rather the people who list being a fan of a team in their profile. So if I identify the Yankees as my team (I do) then I'd be counted as a Yankees fan in NY.

ETA: I'm not saying this makes it statistic gold, but it's better than just mentioning how much you hate the Yankees in a status update, and getting counted as a Yankees fan.

It's crazy that the Yankees and RedSox show up as 2-3 in almost every zip-code in the country.
That rivalry in the aughts (and media slobbering fest of it) made a lot people fans. The Yankees have always had a lot of fans due to their tradition, but when the Red Sox finally won a couple World Series legions of new Sox fans sprang up all over the country. The funny thing is most diehard Red Sox fans hate them with a passion; they call them the "pink hat fans." It's so bad that one of my buddies from New Hampshire actually stopped following the team and began following the Pawtucket Sox (AA or AAA team) and the Oakland As.

White Sox have a very small pocket in certain counties south of Chicago but they made it on the map, unlike the As and Mets.

The Blue Jays thing is interesting, I figured they'd at least be 2/3 in areas like Buffalo, Niagara Falls, towns close to the border. I wonder if Blue Jays data was just excluded in total.

I grew up in the NF/Buffalo area and can't remember knowing any Blue Jays fans. That area is solidly Yankees fans.

The Jays never reversed the fan demographic of the Bills, where Southern Ontario loves the Bills. They just couldn't match the draw & mystique of the Yankees in New York State, so their fan border matches the international border. Part of this is because great deal of the area was settled after WWII by men from NYC seeking factory jobs at Goodyear and other places. The grandfathers of my generation were all Murder's Row fans as little kids and Mantle fans as adults, and our fathers grew up with them watching pinstripes.

if they included canada, it would be the whole country. actually would have been interesting to see that and mexico.

I'm going to wager the Yankees are the top rooted for team over several local teams across the country. I would bet some local teams would finish 3rd or 4th.

eta - part of why the game is so awful and boring.

That's way over the top, and sounds more philosophical than anything. I guess he must love being a loser. Good riddance to those guys -- in my experience, the pink hat haters were, and are, miserable drunks.

Most of us that loved them all our lives are annoyed by the PR and slick corporate marketing of the team, but are happy for the damn championships, which were received with an almost religiosity by those of us who had rooted for them for a long time.

Looks like the Cardinals have the highest concentration of fans in one county. 86% of the fans in Jefferson County are Cards Fans

I'm a little surprised that the various teams didn't receive as much support in their spring training locales as I thought they would.
