International play? (1 Viewer)

NFL | League exploring new plan for international games

Sun, 15 Jul 2007 07:07:21 -0700

The Detroit Free Press reports the NFL is exploring a plan where each team would play one game outside the United State each season, according to league vice president Mark Waller. Waller also hopes to have teams based in London, Mexico and Canada within a decade. The league is shifting its strategy for overseas growth by playing regular-season games to other countries. As a result, the league may add a game to the schedule. "You'd play eight at home, eight away, and one game internationally," Waller said. The Super Bowl could also be played abroad, but the league's owners would need to approve any such plan.

-------------------

I could accept this as a substitute to 2 of their preseason games, otherwise I think it is a horrible idea.

Why does more football on TV seem like a horrible idea?

First off, the players hate it. Secondly, why put a team through travel like that, unless you really don't give a crap about them. Thirdly, the NFL is doing just fine without this, and tell me, how would this benefit the player or the team??? And finally........Europe doesn't deserve it!!!! :pickle:

I'd have thought the answer to your question is pretty obvious. More games equal more gate receipts and concessions profits and additional US broadcasts which increase the value of the broadcast contracts. Games in Europe mean new European TV deals and increased merchandizing in Europe. All of these equal extra income for the team which since the players get a percentage slice of all revenues means higher player salaries. As for whether the players want to do it. Um, who cares? They are employees of the NFL and EXTREMELY well compensated ones at that. If they don't like the job requirements of their job they can always quit and go play in Canada. When any other company in the world needs to send employees over on business, do they have to cancel their business because the employee doesn't prefer to go?I'm not for crapping on employees, but one fully expensed overseas trip a year is not a hardship at all with what NFL players, even league minimum guys, are making.

I'm not sure the players hate it; I'd imagine lots of them would find it exciting to play somewhere different. But the players hate a lot of things (no end zone celebrations, for example).Travel like what? Flying to London on a private jet is being put through anything difficult. I suppose they'll also have to stay at a really nice hotel in London, too.I agree that the NFL is doing fine without this, but it's not like expansion hasn't happened before. Were you adverse to the switch in 1978, too? This would benefit the player AND the team; both would see an increase in take home pay.Canada, Mexico aren't part of Europe. If you ask anyone in London, they'll tell you that they're not part of Europe, either.

I just don't see how a European team in the NFL would be viable. The whole jet-lag issue for that team (and teams traveling there to play) would be a major competitive issue, I would think.

I agree there might be a an effect for a team based in Europe, but I just don't think that's going to happen (despite the OP). I don't think the once a year traveling to Europe is a problem at all.

The jet lag and schedule disruption will screw them up. It is okay if everyone does it, I guess. But I think the one London game this year is unfair to those teams. A trip to Canada or Mexico would be a different story.
