iphone help needed - resolved (1 Viewer)

Okay add this to the list of things I never thought I would need. My in laws had some seriously old iphones (6s) so we finally got them two new ones (SE model so it kept the home button which they are used to). FYI, it is using ios 18.0.1.

They no longer had the correct Apple ID passwords so we have recreated everything on their new phones with new IDs with one exception. I am trying to add the gmail app to one of them so the father in law can access email. This is where I am going nuts.

I go into the gmail app and select sign in. It wants to use google to sign in so no issue. I enter the username and password and then it goes to hell.

It says it sent a notification to the phone and to open the gmail app and tap Yes on the prompt.

First, I am in the gmail app already. How do I get off the screen I am on and get to any prompt?

Secondly, and this may be the issue. If I go to Settings, Apps, gmail it does not list Notifications for me to be able to turn them on or off for the app. Other apps such as Google are listed there.

On my phone running ios 17 notifications for all apps are under settings, notifications and each app is listed there to turn on or off. So the way these are grouped are different but I see no issue with that itself.

So I don't know if when initially setting up their phone there is some other item (focus, etc.) that I may have set incorrectly or what is preventing me from moving forward. I even tried deleting and readding the gmail app in case I had accidentally done something when initially going into it.

This is literally the last thing I need to get working so their phone is fully functional for their needs.

I have tried googling to find answers but no luck so far. If anyone has a suggestion please let me know.

go to settings>apple account(their name)>at the bottom it lists all phones associated with the ID. are these accurate? if not, delete the wrong ones. it may be sending a code to a phone non longer associated.

Good suggestion. I checked and it only has that phone associated with it. I actually had to create a new Apple Id for them when we got the phone as they could not recall their old password.

Can’t you set up the gmail with the iPhone’s mail application? That’s what I do.
I have tried that as well but it has me enter my Google login (for email) and then says I need to go into the gmail app and say yes to the notification. I go into the gmail app and it is just sitting at the sign in prompt.

Just wanted to provide an update. Issue is now resolved.

When it was sending the notification to which I could not get on the iphone it was also sending a notification to gmail on an ipad. The ipad is under a different Apple ID (does have the same gmail account I was trying to use) and does not have a Sim card in it but it is associated with the same phone number. So I was able to get into that gmail and accept the notification which then allowed me to proceed on the iphone. Once I was able to get past that point on the iphone, the gmail app did show up in the notification to list to enable or disable.

What a convoluted system. Thanks to those who provided suggestions.
