Is anyone watching the Linda Ronstadt tribute segment on HBO? (1 Viewer)

I'm 38,and she was my first crush as a kid. It kills me to know that she is in rough shape. She was an inspiration to me and a big reason I started in music. The girls are doing a good job on the tribute although Stevie Nicks is off key a bit. I hate most country music but this Underwood girl can sing. Wow! Bonnie Raitt is strong tonight also. The backup band is weak and I am wondering if that is by design. I'm looking forward to seeing Cat Stevens. I'm sad about Linda though....

I missed this. Anyone know when it'll be rerun?

I've always been kind of on the fence with Ronstadt. Her covers of well-known hits - though it made her, or someone (Peter Asher?) a ton of money - were not good in comparison to the originals. How do you top Smokey Robinson or Roy Orbison or Buddy Holly? Answer: you don't try. The Stones did this crap, too (so did Michael Bolton) - Mick singing "Just My Imagination" sounds almost like parody. "You're No Good" is the great exception - Linda's vocal on that record was so powerful that it must have made Grace Slick and Pat Benetar (who built her entire career wanting to be Ronstadt and/or Donna Summer) blush.

All that said, that woman had an amazing voice. Once she learned that she didn't have to kill an ant with a jackhammer, she became one of the finest singers we've had. Her album with Dolly & Loretta is a treasure, as are some of her Spanish/Opera records.

It's being re-run @ 1pm EDT today on HBO Signature.

Was that Underwood girl on American Idol? I feel like I have seen her before. I was very impressed with her voice. I also didn't realize that Hall in Oats had a big African American filling. That was cool.

Halls and Oates were masters of Philly soul. I don't know anything about "Hall in Oats."

Yeah she was a hottie back in the 70's when i was a kid. I started disliking her when she got fat and liberal....

as a kidm my parents would take me to their friends house for dinner. they had a basement bar where we would shoot pool and listen to her.

I remember their music being played on black radio in the 80s. I'm a fan.

My history teacher in 10th grade had the "Linda in rollerskates" poster up in his classroom. Don't think that would fly today.

As for the HBO show, only 2 Hall & Oates songs? Unpardonable.
