Is BUFFALO defense for real? (1 Viewer)

I like both defenses over some of the preseason hyped ones of AZ, Wash, Carolina, etc.

I especially like SD schedule and getting the bye out of the way early.

Most people don't remember that Buffalo was an outstanding defense in '04. Something like third against the pass and seventh against the run. Last year they had a lot of injuries and fell out of bed.

Looks like they're back. I think they're for real.

I hope so too when you look at the #s...I've got both SD and Buf in one of my leagues where I had no more auction $ left to purchase a DST.

Last game they started 4 rookies on D, and the 5th, DT McCargo saw a lot of playing time. They will still continue to struggle against the run, but can only get better as the year goes on. Losing Troy Vincent hurts for his leadership and play calling abiliities, but they get faster with Whitner and Simpson at safety.

When Spikes comes back, that will obviously help too.

I'm still a little suspect, I don't think they'll approach their #2 ranking overall from '04, but could finish top 10. I like the sack total so far, and the DL is fast.

Alll of this is predicated on Buffalo having a lead and other teams passing to catch up. If Buffalo is trying to catch up, the D numbers won't be there, becasue teams won't have to pass the ball. They can take advantage of the small DL.

When is that expected to happen??

TIA

Very nice analysis. However, they lost in week 1 and were only up 3-0 for most of week 2 but still put up big #'s when they didn't have much of a lead. 5 of the 6 sacks and the INT against Miami were all in the first half, when there was no score and then the Bills were ahead 3-0.

Yes, but the 4 plays before that, Ronnie Brown was running through the D with no problem. It was excellent timing from Mike Mularkey to call a pass play there. I don't know why Miami didn't run the ball every down.

With some def's like San Diego and Buffalo doing well NOW!Are they mainstays at the top of the best defenses?
Hey, those are both my D's. No surprise they are doing well. Scouting baby. Dropped the old aging Philly D for Buffalo last year. They drafted all D. this latest draft.

And Kiper was hating on the Marv. You can say he reached, but he got the 2 guys he wanted. Whitner will be in the backfield in Buffalo for a long time......Mel also said we took a great pick with #4 in 03 for Mike Williams. Silly Mel......

Yep, and Kiper had the WR Mike Williams ranked I think as his #1 player in last year's draft. Both of Kiper's revered Mike Williams picks have turned out to be big busts, at least so far.

Buffalo appears to have an improved defense and an especially strong front seven. My first thought was that neither the Patriots nor Dolphins are even close to clicking in the passing game. That said, I don't see many strong passing teams on the schedule so I think they could be strong all year. Injuries and help from the offense (time of possession) will probably define if they can maintain this level of play all year long.

You guys have convinced me to grab the Buffalo D. There playoff schedule is fantastic going against the Jets and then Miami and Tenn. at home in the cold. Who should I drop Cincy or Philly? My league awards heavy fantasy points for points against and I'm thinking Philly and Cinci will be in alot of shootouts. Thanks.

I'm planning to nab them. I have Denver and Dallas, and plan to drop Dallas. The combo schedules for Denver and Buff seem great, while I might hang on to DAL also just through week 4:

Week: Team: Matchup:

3 Bills vs NYJ

4 Cowboys @ TEN

5 Bills @ CHI

6 Broncos vs OAK

7 Broncos @ CLE

8 **Spot Start**

9 Bills vs GB

10 Broncos @ OAK

11 Bills @ HOU

12 Broncos @ KC

13 **Spot Start**

--

14 Bills @ NYJ

15 Bills vs MIA

16 Bills vs TEN

I like all of that at first glance. Good combo perhaps that could be found on waivers.

Cincy just lost David Pollack for the year, that can't be good.

And great call about the layoff schedule. God I love The Ralph in December.

BTW, in 2004, the Bills brought me fantasy glory (along with LJ), as the ultimate week 6 defense pickups!! They were STUDLY!!

The answer in in your previous sentence. Mularkey was calling the plays.

I've been looking all afternoon for Spikes info (should have been working), but the only thing I found was KFFl reporting he might play week 3.

My gut, first home game, they've already announced their announcing the defense, TKO won't miss it.

Bufffalo d has had a solid to very good d for several years now.
Weren't they real bad last year? I remember Spikes being injured, but can't remember the other circumstances.
I have a feeling some of the players quit on Mularkey which could explain why he quit on the Bills.
Sam Adams quit on the Bills. Jeff Posey was getting to slow on the OLB, and we were too slow at safety (Milloy and Vincent)
