I'm a huge fan of GnR and think Appetite is one of the greatest albums of all time.  Top 5 for me.   However, I'm not sure that I could place Guns as a top 10 American rock band.  They had a pretty short run.  Journey is in my top 10.  Even KISS was a much bigger success.  That doesn't mean that I like KISS more but I have to admit that KISS was bigger.

The Byrds and R.E.M.?  Seriously?

I put GnR above both.  The Eagles should likewise be above both.  I'm sure others as well.

Crappy list.

Appetite for Destruction is a fantastic album but it's not enough to get them to top 10.  Hey, if they're top 15 or 20 that's pretty ####### great.  And A for D is a top 10 American album.

Shocked by the Eagles and Ramones dissing.  Both great bands for different reasons but both far superior to GNR.
How the #### are the Ramones a great band?  On no level should they be in any discussion as a top band.  Thats just crazy talk.  The eagles I can see but the Ramones?  GTFO

Not that chart success means everything, but the Ramones have ZERO albums that hit the top 40 here in the U.S.

Not a single made the top 40 pop charts (three made the mainstream rock top 40).

There are the textbook definition of a band whose alleged greatness and impact has been massively overstated by rock critics.

I'm sorry, I'm no music buff, and don't catch schtick these days, but the Beach Boys being good thing is a joke, right?

If not, could somebody point me towards a good Beach Boys song?

Ugh, inspiring many many bands that followed them down?  Their songs still live on today down?  What more do you want?

I dislike KISS so much that I subconsciously block them out of my mind, but without a doubt, KISS is a greater American Rock & Roll band than GnR

Great point.  I mean there is only one Eleven Madison Park restaurant in America,  If it was any good they'd have 14,000 like McDonalds.

It must be "Little Saint Nick" that gets their engines cranking.

For those of us under 50, that #### is like nails on a chalkboard.

these discussions are like arguing which shade of grey is the best
Especially this one. American rock music was never as good it's British counterparts despite all the key roots of rock and roll have been mastered Americans- blues, jazz, boogie woogie, r/b/, country, folk, gospel, etc.

Off the top of my head, here are 10 better American bands: Beach Boys, Byrds, Pearl Jam, White Stripes, Beastie Boys (if that counts), Grateful Dead, Green Day, Velvet Underground, Talking Heads, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

I'm 34 and think the Brian Wilson is one of the handful most talented American musical artists of the century. He's up there with Miles, Coltrane, Gershwin, Bernstein, Dylan, Copland, Duke, Berry and Aretha.

I have them in the 20-25 range. Saw them in '92 and they were pretty good, wish I could have seen them around 87-88. Should never have made the decision to do the double album. What they're doing now is an embarrassment. Not quite Hollywood Vampires level of embarrassment but an embarrassment nonetheless. It's over.

Yes. I think GnR is a lower Top 10 of all time.  They're Sandy Koufax or Gayle Sayers.  They didn't have longevity........but when they were together, they were white hot and kicked major ###.

Bands that are better with little debate:  Beach Boys, Metallica, Van Halen, CCR, The Doors, Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, The Eagles and Aerosmith

Bands that are arguably better:  Lynyrd Skynyrd, Nirvana, Petty & Heartbreakers

Bands that are around the same level:  ZZ Top, REM, Ramones, Allman Brothers, Journey & RHCP

They'd be in my personal top 10, but I'm a hard rock fan.  Objectively, I think they're in the 12-15 range.

Grateful Dead and Phish are in the absolute top tier here.  I would bump Allman Bros and RHCP in your listings.

I honest to God do not get the Ramones love here.  They are not transcendental like Nirvana,  or musically talented like say phish, they were just a band in a movement at a particular time at a the right place.  Their music IMO doesnt hold up.  And this is coming from a guy who had a big bro that all he did was listen to this genre of music.  The ramones, black flag, sex pistols etc are just a blip in music history.  Nothing particularly distinguishes them.  Its a simple 3 chord song singing against the establishment man

GnR had 1 great album. Koufax was a 7x all star and 3 time Cy Young. 2x WS MVP. 3x triple crown winner. 1x MVP. He's like The Beach Boys of pitchers, not GnR. GnR is Bo Jackson. It was fun but it didn't last long and when you actually look at it, it was more hype than production.

REM has at least 7 critically acclaimed albums.  Back the #### off REM.  They are rated right where they should be.

Did REM pen lyrics telling s and ######s to get out of their way?

Maybe REM should have failed to show up for concerts or broken up a dozen times or churned through musicians or penned lyrics attacking black people by calling them 'naggers'....
