My two favorite bands all time (not the two I would argue as "best" but my two favorites).  For me personally, Pearl Jam takes it for their longevity and variety.  But Sweet Child is the best song by either band.
Appetite vs Ten would be an interesting choice for me - would probably go give them both a listen before I'd vote.  Somebody poll it up?

Aerosmith is probably the only artist or athlete who I've ever seen tarnish their legacy by hanging on too long. There was so much suck it really brought down the mean. F them.

How are the rascals never mentioned on these great band lists. They crap all over the ramones in terms of writing a punchy pop song.
When was the last time you saw Aerosmith live? I saw them about 5 years ago (maybe a little longer). I was curious how well they'd perform. Put simply they crushed it. I mean absolutely crushed it.

The albums aren't as solid as they used to be but when you have albums like Toys in the Attic and Rocks nothing you do after that is going to measure up.

I heard a story of an Aerosmith concert, maybe someone who has seen them recently can verify.  They started the concert with a bunch of their 90s dreck, and then said "ok, now that that's out of the way, let rock!" and proceeded to play their good stuff.

If you ask 100 people to name their Top 10, probably 50 bands would get votes. Everyone will go in a different direction. In my case, I love the Eagles, but I never would have thought to list them. I'm not that into the Ramones or the Byrds, so they would never make my list. Do singers with bands count as bands (Bruce, Petty, Bob Seger, etc.)? I also would not have thought of the Beach Boys as a "rock" band. One band I thought of that hasn't been mentioned was Chicago. Another band that I like that others might not would be ZZ Top. Everyone will different favorites.
I hear ya on taste but I think if people are going to make a top 10 they need to get outside their comfort zone and be honest. Bruce & the ESB isn't a personal favorite of mine but there's no denying they are a top 10 (and B & the ESB are a BAND and not solo as some claim IMO).

ZZ Top is absolutely in the discussion. Way, way under rated. How many bands that started in the 70s can claim that they've had the same lineup the entire time (Note: not saying that fact enhances their top 10 status. Just an interesting observation).

U2 sucks.
What a great contribution to the discussion.

You can dislike U2 all you want, but you cannot argue with their success and sustained popularity.  Two decades ago after the original GNR lineup #### the bed, U2 was still doing a 5-leg tour and selling out stadiums everywhere. It's insulting to put GNR in the same sentence with legends like U2, quite honestly.

Not that chart success means everything, but the Ramones have ZERO albums that hit the top 40 here in the U.S.

Not a single made the top 40 pop charts (three made the mainstream rock top 40).

There are the textbook definition of a band whose alleged greatness and impact has been massively overstated by rock critics.
Does anyone that would argue on the Ramones behalf consider them a pop band?

Aerosmith sold out.  Plain and simple.  Tyler made sure of it pushing the ballads every chance he had.  Money is a helluva pull though.  Joe Perry's autobiography is pretty good and gives a nice account of the band's start and struggles.

Aerosmith is definitely a top 10 US rock band.

Grateful Dead and Phish are in the absolute top tier here.  I would bump Allman Bros and RHCP in your listings.

I honest to God do not get the Ramones love here.  They are not transcendental like Nirvana,  or musically talented like say phish, they were just a band in a movement at a particular time at a the right place.  Their music IMO doesnt hold up.  And this is coming from a guy who had a big bro that all he did was listen to this genre of music.  The ramones, black flag, sex pistols etc are just a blip in music history.  Nothing particularly distinguishes them.  Its a simple 3 chord song singing against the establishment man
I'd personally put Fugazi above Ramones, if we're talking openly.

If we're counting longevity and ticket sales as qualities of greatness, where do you place Pearl Jam?

If Aerosmith stopped after their first few albums they would rank higher in my book.
Yeah, there 1990s cheese is so disgraceful that it disqualifies them from any consideration for greatness, IMO.  Their crap outweighs their good and frankly, classic rock destroyed their earlier decent tunes by overplay.  I can't turn "Sweet Emotion" or "Dream On" off fast enough when it comes on.  Enough already.  Same thing applies with Stairway or Hotel California.  Just retire these songs and let's move on.

Aerosmoth is awful and if it wasn't for Rick Rubin they'd be the typical forgotten rockers of yesteryear. They made a bajillion dollars since the Run DMC / Walk This Way collaboration, but since then they've churned out so much garbage it just tarnishes any greatness there once was.
Aerosmith is most definitely in the top 10 of american rock bands.   not even a debate.

just because we're old and have heard the songs 10,000 times doesn't mean they aren't great songs.   They are.

And I don't fault you at all GB. There's probably song I do that to that make you wonder what my problem is.
My 7th grade son is just now discovering classic rock with one of his buddies and I couldn't be more delighted.  So his discovery of a "Black Dog" or "Stairway" might be the elixir for me to get over my attitude towards those songs being played to death.

Some stations do a better job of playing deep cuts, subscription radio/ cable audio stations are the best at this. No ads either.

My son did the same thing about that age. Really began to show interest in music and with that started playing bass guitar.

There were hungover mornings where he'd wake me up with his playing. Initial instinct is to make it be known that he's not alone in the house and people, namely me, are still sleeping.

Then I realize he's playing The Ocean and I'd nod back to sleep with a proud father's smile on my face.

yeah, I hear you.  I'm stuck driving a 2004 car with a busted CD changer and when I'm not listening to sports or NPR, I turn to the FM dials and scroll through the stations.  Hard to believe that classic rock is STILL "Getting the LED out".

I listen to Pandora or Spotify at home or when I'm walking where I can thumbs down an overplayed classic.  Pretty awesome feature.

Agree. Deep Tracks on Sirius/XM is one of my presets. Admittedly there are some songs they play that I can't stand but that's a by product of their eccentric playlist. It's so deep and unique that it's inevitable you can't possibly like everything.

My 3 year old (just turned 4), wearing his Justice League, busting out his dance moves to GnR. Yesterday, while driving, he wanted me to play all the Blondie songs I have and then requested AWOLNATION's Sail. My wife tries to play stuff like Raffi and other kids music - he says he wants dad's music.

I vaguely remember in 1986 driving my parent's car and thinking "Two for Tuesday? that's awesome.  Let me stick around for another minute to see which The Who track they're going to serve up next. "  Did I ever imagine that Two for Tuesday would still be thing 30 years later?  Well, of course not! I thought we'd be living on the moon or Mars wearing Mylar jumpsuits.

Sweet Child top 5 song is definitely in play.

Can't get on board with GNR > Pearl Jam
40+ million more in album sales is hard to argue with....

(GnR with more)

Deep Tracks is a fine channel. Hell, even Classic Vinyl & Rewind  - the classic rock "hits" channels on SXM - are miles deeper than FM classic rock stations.

"IT'S A TRIPLE SHOT THURSDAY"

GnR RULED my college years.  They literally had all the hair band freaks, the Crüe guys, Poison losers, and girls that chased the same.  Lyrically it was different enough, and Axl had the "freak" aspect as well.  Slash and his top hat and guitar skills also amazing.

I liked the Bo Jackson comparison.  They were that amazing for a short period of time.  No real longevity, though.  Amazing how musical genius and a drug/booze addled life will take it away.  Could they have seriously tested the top 5 ever?  Probably, but I don't think they did.

So, without the numbers to back it, w are stuck with opinions, and they are like #######s, everyone has one
