Is Rob Gronkowski starting? (1 Viewer)

Assuming all are healthy . . .

Hernandez used as a pass catcher and quasi WR

Gronk used 50/50 as receiver and blocker

Crumpler used primarily as a blocker

Sweet, I just over-waited in an auction and grabbed Gronk and Hernandez. I figure one will be startable.
Trying to figure out which one to start each week will be the problem as long as both are healthy. I like Hernandez's upside a little better and Gronk's back issue risk has me downgrading him slightly. But at the end of the season, even if one has better total points, I'm guessing that the games that each outscores the other tend to be pretty evenly split and completely unpredictable.

Do you guys think its always gonna be a time share? He seems like the clear front runner to me as far as potential skill goes. Given his college performance and the fact that hes a fast 6'6" 265 lbs former LB turner TE that can block and catch above average.

Gronkowski has looked phenomenal this preseason - if you saw him hop five yards carrying a leg tackler to score a touchdown, you only saw one of his touchdowns that night - and he's done well with Hernandez around. I agree with the splits that Yudkin posted. Crumpler is the true blocking TE at this poitn. I think the Pats will be running a lot of different packages including big 3 TE sets, standard pro sets, and 4 or 5 wide with Hernandez and Faulk splitting out, and everything in between. I think Gronkowski gets the most snaps of anyone, but Hernandez will be on the field almost as often and will almost always be in there as a potential receiver.

I did see him beast it in from 5 yards out (1 leg and dragging a 200 lbs guy on his other), I was worried he might have hurt himself but he was fine, hes just so fast for how big he is.

A healthy Hernandez will have the third most catches on the Patriots. I love Gronk but he'll be more streaky. I can see several games with one or no catches. AH on the other hand will be catching at least three passes every game with a couple blow up games when there are match ups to exploit.

Sure, he blocks better than Hernandez. Which is why he does individual drills with the linemen while Hernandez goes with the WR's.In a power running offense that pounds the run to set up the pass, I take Gronkowski everyday. His presence on the field doesn't telegraph anything. But this is the Pats. Who has more upside in the Pats' offense? A fair-good blocker/good receiver or a below average blocker/excellent receiver?

If the rookies both stay healthy (Crump to me is a non-factor at this stage of his career), this situation will have us pulling our hair out all season long. All the more reason I want to grab one of the handful of stud TEs at the top of the list to avoid this headache.

In deep leagues, I dont think it would be a bad thing to take both with your last 2 picks and see what happens.

Gronk has more tds in preseason but hernandez didnt play the 3rd game.

Does he always do individual drills with the linemen? IDK honestly thats why im asking. If you were to ask me what has more upside for the patriots a TE that can block giving brady time to sit in his pocket and can catch balls or a TE who can catch balls at the least better than gronkowski, I would say the one that gives Brady more time to make his team better.I wouldnt be surprised honestly if the pats were lining up with 2 TEs more often than with 1 TE.

Looks like they've got another Ben Coates on their hands. Definitely the primary target moving forward.

Decent pick later in the draft for larger leagues. Could perform like a #1 by seasons end.

I waited on TE in a draftmaster league or draft it and forget about it league. My TE's are Carleson and both Hernandez and Gronk. I am hoping since I dont have to make the decision on who to start I will be ok. I would be going crazy every week if I had to make a choice.

On C. Lammey and Bloom's podcast on the Patriots, they had a female local reporter from NE on there discussing a myriad of topics. One of them was the Te situation. She basically said that Crumpler is the blocker, Hernandez is just about like a receiver and Gronkowski can both run and block but in practices he's really been used

around the goaline and the coaches have been impressed. This was BEFORE the two Td performance he had and of course the one he had tonight.

Since that podcast in 3 leagues my strategy has been to take an elite Te and then wait until the draft is almost over and take Gronkowski. I've even been so bold to have given him his own nickname, The Rhino!

Does your league give points for blocking? Then where is the upside in terms of fantasy scoring for Gronk when he's blocking? Gronk could easily be outscored by Hernandez even though he sees many more snaps than Hernandez...because some of those snaps are blocking plays that yield 0 fantasy opportunities for him. It's a quality of snaps issue. And in two TE sets, if one is held in to block, which one runs a pattern?I think Gronk is a tremendous talent and I'd be all over him if he went to an offense that used a TE in a more traditional way. But this is the Pats and there's nothing traditional about Bill.At this point I suspect you've got your opinion and further discussion isn't going to lead to anything.

This guy drafted Hernandez apparently. All I said was that having a TE that can catch (Which is honestly all hernandez has been credited to do) is less important than a TE who can allow brady time in the pocket in the midfield and in the red zone is a 6'6" quality (in college at least) receiver.
