Is there a reason I don't know about why... (1 Viewer)

I had the 1st pick in the second round #18 overall and I took Donnie Avery and was stoked about it. Am I missing something?

Many people feel he is an eventual starter in the Rams offense. He does have plenty of hurdles to clear first. He has Holt and Bennett (and maybe others) ahead of him. He needs to learn the playbook and other aspects of the pro game. Considering all in all, I think he has the best situation of the rookie WR group. I can see MAYBE 7-8 RB, 2-3 QB and maybe 1-3 WR before him, but I would think he should go slightly before #18 overall.

it's all preference. there isn't a top tier of rookie wr's this year and 2nd tier consensus is really deep and close in talent. i think avery is a bit underrated in rookie drafts right now because he didnt get the predraft hype like hardy, thomas, kelley, sweed and jackson got.

That about sums it up. There's not really a clear consensus among the rookie receivers this year. Avery may have been the first WR drafted, but that may have also been a reach. Like a lot of the receivers in this class, he has some appealing qualities but also some shortcomings that could hold him back. I think he generally gets drafted about where he should.

more importantly, how is the first pick of the second round #18 overall? Is this a 17 team league?
12 team league... 5 additional picks were given for statistical reasons. Like #13 was given to the team with the lowest scoring team from last season. trying to even things out a little I guess.

interesting idea.Like someone else said, there's a huge tier around picks 8-20. You could take them in just about any order. Take the staff rankings for example, they place him anywhere from 7-26. I'd take him before pick 18, but not by much.

We can take FA's in our rookie draft. Early in the 3rd, I chose D. Hester over D. Avery. I am developing a case

of buyer's remorse. I think D. Avery will have more impact.

I was a Holt owner and was very happy to have him drop to me at #21. Not really sold on him since I still have a few question marks in my mind about him, but he'd be hard-pressed not to put up decent numbers if Holt get hurt.

If you check the nfldraftguys PREDRAFT rankings, he was way down. People think because your name was called, you're suddenly a better WR then 10 other people in the draft class.

Reggie Brown is a starting WR on a pass happy offense, with a stud QB. Doesn't matter much, he SUCKS.

Draft as if every WR was starting this year, and focus on talent and ability. Which is why the predraft rankings are the ones to check out. Trust me, there's very few stud WRs sitting on the bench. If you're good, you'll get touches. End of story.

Cecil had Royal WR16, then suddenly oh lawd he's on Denver, WR3! Wow he jumped 13 other WRs in the span of 4 hrs. That's impressive.

Again with Cecil, Caldwell falls from 5th to 13th because he lands with Palmer? *lol*

Post draft rankings are more or less a joke. People get all jacked up about teams, offense, QBs, system. Sure it's helpful to SLIDE a guy around a little, but to totally jack up your rankings based on the draft, means 1) your rankings were all wrong before 2) you're just pissing in the wind. And it’s funny how you can be completely wrong on Royal, and then jack him up to an elite WR prospect in 4 hours. Did you find some other tape on him? Did you go back and research him again? Oh an NFL drafted him; throw out that whole scouting stuff. It’s laughable.

Because ONE team, the Rams, loved Avery, doesn't mean every set of pre-draft rankings were wrong. And I've seen every person jump up Avery because of one team picking him. The Rams are an utter mess. If you're letting the Rams dictate your scouting ability, you should find a new hobby.

That would be a good post if Bloom didn't have him at #13 PRE-DRAFT:
13 (13) Donnie Avery WR HoustonAvery looked the part at Houston this year, but seeing him next to other top Senior prospects in Mobile clinched his place high on my board. He reminds me of Greg Jennings in his routes, but he's not as lethal after the catch. His outstanding speed and body control converges in his change of direction - exploding in and out of his cuts. Avery finishes the deal with his dependable hands. He's not big, and he doesn't play big, so he could get pushed around some, but it shouldn't prevent him from eventually becoming a starter.

While I somewhat agree with your point, I'd jump a player up if a team I believe in drafted him. Believe it or not, these teams might actually know a little more than we do. They're far from perfect, so I won't take dump my own thoughts and replace it with the draft order, but where and when the player was drafted is relevant. I like Royal more now (although not 13 spots more) than before the draft because a coach and staff that has had success recently drafted him. I also bumped Jordy Nelson, although he was already high on my list.

Avery is just one of about a dozen guys that could pan out from this rookie class. Problem is only a couple will probably develop into fantasy starters. My money is on Earl Bennett.

Fair enough. I guess I should just defer to the Ravens when it comes to WR's then. Or the Bears. After all, they know more than I do. :goodposting:

In fact. I'm just going to use the NFL draft rankings as my draft rankings. All the teams know more than me, so that's the best way to draft. Why think when I'm not the smartest in the room, and especially so when all those smarties are infallible.

I see Avery as a bigger threat on the Ram offense than a fantasy player. He will most likely line up in the slot for St Louis. But, when I am drafting in a rookie draft, I want the guy who can be a potential WR1. Maybe it is just me, but I see Avery as a career slot receiver on an aging team, with an aging quarterback and an even older backup. Yes, it is dynasty, but it would be tough to start Avery in a fantasy league. I actually think Burton has that ability.

What draft has 17 picks in the first round? You have a team cheat and revoke their first or something?
This was already answered earlier.

I also picked Darren McFadden in round 1

He's built exactly like Ike Bruce, who had some good years as the #1 before Holt arrived. Bulger is aging but it's more of him staying healthy than his age. Burton does seem more ready and will probably contribute sooner. I wouldn't be surprised if Burton does become the #1 eventually but he has to overcome a lot of nagging injuries that plagued him in college.

he's short

Bennett can be a very very good #2 WR (1100 yards IIRC last time he was a #2 WR)

I would say 18 overall is about right. He went 20 overall in my league. LJ (repeated lineup violations) and Bradshaw were selected ahead of him.
