You're instant messaging with a male colleague about work stuff. The conversation turns to casual chitchat and the guy mentions he's going to some of the Olympic events in Rio. You jokingly ask "Oh yeah? Women's gymnastics? Beach volleyball?"

Turns out he's gay but you didn't know it. Do you expect to be fired for this breach of political correctness? Is it presumptuous and homophobic to make the assumption that someone is straight?

"Um, I just said those because those would have been the easiest tickets to score vs. the other events?  Man, I heard those Olympic event tickets are expensive!  You must be doing a great job here to afford that trip.  I'm so jealous!"

Yeah, you're ####ed.

Borderline... But it would be equally presumptuous to assume the comment was derogatory. Nothing wrong with liking beach volleyball or women's gymnastics, if the conversation goes in that direction. I'd pull my phone out, disconnect from company wifi, google a few famous people from each sport, and if need be pretend I actually watch it. Doubt that'll happen, but you'll be prepared.

Gymnastics seems like it should be in the Winter Games.

to answer your question, I bet your gay coworker has hundreds of texts on his phone that most would find way more offensive than yours.

So you're going to see the weightlifting then? I assume you'll watch the clean and jerk portion, but leave before the snatch starts?

Your gaydar was malfunctioning, but even having a meeting over it would be excessive. If the guy wasn't open or obvious about it previously, he has no right to expect you to make that kind of assumption.

I remember once making some very hetero comment to a gay subordinate (before I knew he was gay). It wasn't offensive, and I certainly didn't feel bad about it when I later learned he was gay. But I always remembered saying it and feeling a little weird about it.

"I didn't know you were gay - I thought you were transgender, like Caitlyn Jenner.  Did you know I'm Irish?  Oh look, a shiny object!"

just tell him you believe women should not be allowed to play sports and flip it around where instead of being a homophobe you are just a misoganist take that to you are welcome in advance bank

I'm offended that anyone is going to the hellhole called the olympics this year.  Your whole company is going to die when he comes back.
